1.Introduction
ThisbookletdescribesthefeaturesandoperationoftheNPL-1
EGSM900,DCS1800andPCS1900cellularterminalwithFieldTest
Displaysoftware.FieldTestDisplay(i.e.EngineeringTestDisplayor
NetworkMonitoringDisplay)isa softwarefeatureavailablethrough
theuserinterfaceoftheNPL-1cellularterminal.
FieldTestDisplayisavailableonlyonterminalsequippedwith
specialtestsoftware;itisnotavailableonstandardterminals.
AphonewithFieldTestsoftwareisintendedforverificationofthe
operationoftheEGSM900,DCS1800andPCS1900networks.Itmay
behavedifferentlyfromthenormalphoneinsomeinstances,for
example:
•Thecaller'sphonenumberisnotdisplayed
•Insomecasestheuserinterfacebehavesdifferentlyfromthat
describedintheusermanualofthephone
•Theperformanceofthephonecansometimesbelowerthan
thatofa standardNPL-1terminal
AphonewiththeFieldTestDisplayisnota calibratedmeasurement
device,soitmustbeborneinmindthat:
•MeasuredvaluesseenintheFieldTestDisplayare
approximate(e.g.RSSIlevelsinfieldtestdisplays01,03,04
and05ingroup01)
•BecausetheFieldTestDisplayisnotalwaysupdatedinreal
time,thedisplayedvaluesmayactuallyhavechangedbefore
theyareshowntohavedone so onthedisplay.
Thefieldtestdisplaymay changewhennewSWisupdatedonthe
phone.Thefieldsdescribedinthisdocumentmayhavedifferent
values,andtheremay besomedisplaysremoved/addedinthenew
SWversions.Nokiareservestherighttomakechangestothe
featuresandoperationoftheFieldTestSoftware.

2.UsingtheFieldTest
Display
Activationanddeactivation
TheFieldTestDisplayislocatedattheendofthemainmenuloop.
Itcanbeactivated(ordeactivated)inthefollowingway:
1Withthedisplayclear,pressMenutoenterthemenufacility.
2ScrollinthemenumainlooptotheNetmonitor item andpress
Select.
3EntertheindexofthetesttobeactivatedattheGroup/display:
promptorenter0 todeactivatetheNetmonitor. Theindexis
shownonthetopleftcornerofthedisplay.Example:Ifdisplay
03ingroup01shouldbeactivatedenter0103intheprompt.
4ConfirmbypressingOK.
Thefieldtestdatawillthenappearaftera moment.Theindexofthe
testwillappearonthetoprightcornerofthedisplay.
WhentheFieldTestDisplayisactive,thephoneworksinalmostthe
samewayasitdoeswhentheFieldTestDisplayisinactive,except
thatthekeysandscrollthroughthevarioustests,
whereastheywouldscrollthroughtheshortcodememorywhenthe
FieldTestDisplayisinactive.Theremayalsobesomeother
differencescomparedtotheoperationofthenormalNPL-1
terminal.
TheFieldTestDisplayappearsasa so-calledsoftindicator,which
meansthatitisvisibleonlyifthereisnothingelsetodisplay.For
example,oncethefirstdigitofa phonenumberhasbeenentered,
theFieldTestDisplaydisappearsandtheentereddigitisshown.
Afterthefullnumber hasbeendialled,thenumberdisappearsand
theFieldTestDisplayreappearsonthescreen.

TheonlywaytodeactivatetheFieldTestDisplayistoclearthe
Group/display:promptintheNetmonitor menuandentera zeroor
simplyenter0000andconfirmtheinputbypressingOK.
Fieldtestmodes
TherearethreeFieldTestDisplaymodes:
•executemode
•datadisplaymode
•helpmode
Theexecutemodes(indisplays11,12and13inGroup1)are
enteredfromthemenuasdescribedabove.Theexecutemodeisof
theonce-offtype.
Torunanothertestintheexecutemode,theNetmonitor menu must
bere-activated.
Whileindatadisplaymode,thefieldtestdata(e.g.carrier,power
level,cell)arevisibleonthemaindisplay.
Whileinhelpmode,onescreenofinstructionsisshownforeach
testtomakeiteasiertoindentifythetestinquestion.Totoggle
betweenthesetwomodes,pressandholdthekey.
Thescrollkeysandofferaneasywaytoswitchto
anothertestwithoutusingthemenu.However,thedatadisplay
moderemains,i.e.nothingwillbeexecutedorsetonalthoughsuch
testswouldbepassed.Thehelpmodeisalsoa non-executemode.
