Overview
The Nortel IP Phone Expansion Module User Guide (CICM),
(NN10300-011) document describes the following:
•Nortel IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) and how to use it with
Nortel IP Phone 2000 Series terminals in a Communication Server
2000/2100 network. For details see “Key Expansion Module (KEM)”
(page 7).
•Nortel IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) and how to use
it with Nortel IP Phone 1100 Series terminals on a CICM platform,
having access to an additional 22 keys on a Communication Server
2000/2100 network. For details see “Graphical Expansion Module
(GEM)” (page 10).
Key Expansion Module (KEM)
IP Phone Key Expansion Module description
Nortel IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) is a hardware component
that connects to an IP Phone to expand the number of fixed line and
feature keys available to the phone. The number of keys that are available
is determined by the Communication Server (CS2000/CS2100) to which
the IP Phone or KEM is connected, and not the devices. When KEM
is used with the Centrex IP Client Manager (CICM), only 22 keys are
available, despite there being 24 physical keys on the KEM.
Keys on the KEM are displayed in two columns of 12 keys, with one
column on each side of a central liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. When
deployed with CICM, the top two keys of each column are not used. See
Figure 1 "IP Phone Key Expansion Module" (page 8).
When a KEM is installed on an IP Phone, the IP Phone controls the keys
of the KEM just as it does its native keys.

8Overview
Figure 1
IP Phone Key Expansion Module
Each KEM has a desk-mount bracket and structural base plate to connect
the KEM to a Nortel IP Phone 2002, IP Phone 2004, or to another KEM.
You can connect a maximum of two KEMs to the IP Phone 2002 and the
IP Phone 2004.
A standalone IP Phone 2002 has 11 feature keys. Adding one KEM
increases the number of feature keys to 36. Adding two KEMs increases
this number to 58.
A standalone IP Phone 2004 has 14 feature keys. Adding one KEM
increases the number of feature keys to 33. Adding two KEMs increases
this number to 55.
Key Expansion Module features
The IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) has the following features:
•24 keys, arranged in two columns on the outside of an LCD display.
These keys provide a maximum of 44 additional, user-labeled feature
keys or lines, to the IP phone.
•desk-mount bracket and structural base plate to connect the KEM to an
IP Phone 2002 or 2004, or to another KEM
•wall-mount bracket to install the KEM alongside a wall-mounted IP

Key Expansion Module (KEM) 9
ATTENTION
When connected to a Centrex IP Client Manager, KEM has only 22 keys
available. The top key in each column is not used.
Key Expansion Module configuration
Nortel IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) does not have an option
menu of its own. When a KEM is installed on an IP Phone, the IP Phone
controls the keys of the KEM just as it does its native keys.
You can use the IP Phone option menu to configure these KEM options:
•language
•screen contrast level
•display diagnostics
•feature key label
The only KEM-specific option available from the Centrex IP Client Manager
terminal setting menu is Display. Use this option to adjust the brightness of
the display.
Key Expansion Module display
Nortel IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) has one liquid crystal
display (LCD) screen, as shown in Figure 2 "IP Phone 2002 with KEM"
(page 9).
Figure 2
IP Phone 2002 with KEM
Each of the physical keys on the KEM can have a user-defined label (with
a maximum of 10 characters) associated with it. Labels for KEM keys are
created using the controls on the IP Phone. KEM keys are numbered
sequentially, beginning with the first number after the last defined key on
the IP phone. See the IP Phone User Guides for the procedure to create a
label for a KEM key.

10 Overview
Centrex IP Client Manager supports different contrast settings for each
display. This means that you can adjust the contrast level for the display
screen on the IP Phone, and each KEM independently.
Graphical Expansion Module (GEM)
IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module description
Nortel IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) is an 18 key
graphical expansion module with a central liquid crystal display (LCD)
screen that provides both icons and labels similar to those provided on the
i24KEM unit. The GEM is compatible with Nortel IP Phone 1100 Series
terminals on the CICM platform.
The GEM provides 18 soft-labeled keys and an LCD screen that displays
pages, each page displays 18 feature keys, with access to the 22 feature
keys on a CS2000/CS2100 M5216 line extension module M522. The
M522 extension module has a total of 22 feature keys, these 22 keys
are spread over two pages on the GEM. A single IP Phone terminal can
support two GEMs, providing up to 44 additional keys.
The implementation of the Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) for IP
Phone 1100 Series terminals include the 1120E, 1140E, and 1150E
terminals.

Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) 11
Graphical Expansion Module features
The IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) 1100 Series terminals
provide the same functionality available on CICM when using the KEM with
the exception of moving features from main terminal display to the GEM,
for details see “Key Expansion Module features” (page 8). For additional
GEM features, see the following:
•18 soft-labeled keys and an LCD screen that displays two pages on the
GEM, for a total of 36 keys
•access to the 22 feature keys on a CS2000/CS2100 line extension
module M522, which are spread over the two pages
•supports two GEM on a single IP Phone terminal, providing up to 44
additional keys
•auto hide functionality is not available for a GEM on the 1100 Series
terminal
•auto scroll functionality is available on the 1120E and 1140E with
advanced GEM functionality turned off, auto scroll is not available on
the 1150E
Graphical Expansion Module configuration
Nortel IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) must be provisioned
through both the CS2000/CS2100 and Element Manager (EM). The M522
line option on the CS2000/CS2100 must be assigned to its associated
terminal on the DMS prior to assigning features to keys on the GEM. The
M522 line option specifies if there are one or two GEM units and enables
provisioning of features on the additional keys. EM data controls the use
of any GEM connected to a terminal, such as, the Gateway uses EM
data information to support or block GEM usage. For example, if terminal
configuration or user profile specifies only one GEM unit, but there are two
GEM units attached to the terminal, the user can only utilize the first GEM,
the second GEM is blocked based on EM data.
The GEM display is very similar to the i24KEM unit. Icons and labels on
the GEM unit operate the same as on the i24KEM unit. A maximum of two
GEM units can be supported on a single terminal.
Advanced GEM functionality and optionality
By default, an IP Phone 1100 Series terminal with GEM attached will adopt
the advanced functionality where the feature keys located on the main
terminal’s second and third pages are relocated to the GEM. Advanced
GEM functionality can be enabled or disabled on a terminal or user basis.

12 Overview
If advanced GEM functionality is turned off, the GEM behaves in the same
manner as the existing KEM, only the keys provisioned on the M522
extension module are displayed on the GEM with the main terminal’s
feature keys accessible through the main terminal’s feature keys pages.
The exception is the IP Phone 1150E, which does not provide pages of
features on the main terminal.
The option to disable advanced GEM functionality on a terminal type
basis is available on the Terminal Configuration Element Manager web
page. From the web page, select the terminal type from the IP Phone
11xxE Terminal Configuration page. Under Feature Key Attributes is
the GEM functionality option, Enable advanced GEM functionality. The
default parameter is set to Yes, changing the parameter to No disables all
advanced GEM functionality for users on the selected terminal type.
The option for individual users to enable or disable advanced GEM
functionality is available within the User Profile or User Override Element
Manager pages. User Override has priority over User Profile, if the user
does not have a profile, terminal configuration is used.
The M522 line option is assigned to the users LEN through the OSSgate
flow-through provision feature. One M522 line option provides support for
one GEM. Two M522 line options assigned to a LEN provides support for
two GEMs.
The default support for IP Phone 1120E, 1140E, and 1150E is two GEMs
with 22 keys per module. Details of the number of provisioned expansion
modules against a users LEN is available on the CICM Element Manager,
select Users and the Line assigned to that user. Changing this value
without removing the M522 option is not recommended, it would remove
GEM functionality from the user without de-provisioning the users M522
line option. Prior to attaching the GEM to an 1100 Series terminal, turn off
the power to the phone. Once the GEM is attached, turn on the power and
log into the CICM, the GEM feature keys are available.
Graphical Expansion Module display
Nortel IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) has one liquid crystal
display (LCD) screen and 18 soft-labeled keys with access to an additional
22 feature keys. The GEM is compatible with the IP Phone 1100 Series
terminals 1120E, 1140E, and 1150E. For details on these terminals see
the following:
•“IP Phone 1120E with GEM” (page 13)
•“IP Phone 1140E and 1150E with GEM” (page 14)

The IP Phone 1120E has four feature keys available on the main terminal.
Historically, access for 10 of the 14 feature keys provisioned on the M5216
line was available by using the Up and Down navigational buttons to scroll
through three pages of features.
When GEM is attached to the 1120E and advanced GEM functionality
turned on, only one page of features is provided on the main terminal with
feature keys 1 to 4. The remaining features are not available on the main
terminal, they are moved onto the GEM. GEM functionality allows a total
of 36 buttons over two pages, of which four buttons on the second page
are not utilized.
The GEM displays the feature keys 5 to 14, as well as the M522 extension
module feature keys 1 to 22, see Figure 4 "IP Phone 1120E feature keys
with GEM" (page 13). To access all the feature keys on the GEM, the
user must use the Up and Down navigational buttons to scroll through the
pages.
Figure 4

through three pages of features.
When GEM is attached to the 1140E and advanced GEM functionality
turned on, only one page of features is provided on the main terminal with
feature keys 1 to 6. The remaining features are not available on the main
terminal, they are moved onto the GEM. GEM functionality allows a total
of 36 buttons over two pages, of which six buttons on the second page
are not utilized.
The GEM displays the feature keys 7 to 14, as well as the M522 extension
module feature keys 1 to 22. To access all the feature keys on the GEM,
the user must use the Up and Down navigational buttons to scroll through
the pages.
The IP Phone 1150E provides one page of features due to its unique ACD
specific feature keys. When GEM is attached to the 1150E and advanced
GEM functionality turned on, the behavior is exactly the same as the IP
Phone 1140E, see Figure 5 "IP Phone 1140E and 1150E feature keys with
GEM" (page 15).

18 Setup and assembly
•connect the ribbon cable to the AEM connector on the right side of the
IP Phone.
•connect the ribbon cable to the 10-pin recessed male connector on a
KEM that is connected to the IP Phone.
Installing a Key Expansion Module
Follow this procedure to connect a Nortel IP Phone Key Expansion Module
(KEM) to an IP Phone.
Step Action
1Remove the IP Phone from the stand by pressing the tilt handle
and pulling the phone away from the stand.
Instead of removing an IP Phone 2004 from the stand, you can
adjust the angle of the stand to maximum.
2Place the IP Phone and the KEM face down on a nonabrasive
surface and align them.
3Move the connecting arm of the KEM into the IP Phone and align
the connection plug to the accessory expansion module (AEM)
port on the back of the IP Phone.
Some older IP Phone 2002 models have shorter connector pins.
If your IP Phone 2002 has a short connector pin, detach the
ribbon cable connector from the retaining clip on the KEM and
connect it to the header connector on the IP Phone.
4After the cable is attached to the phone, reconnect the ribbon
cable to the KEM.
The KEM starts when it is attached to a power source. The KEM
does not have its own power source, and it draws its power from
the IP Phone to which it is connected.
5Wrap the clamp around the cable and screw the clamp into the
back of the IP Phone using a 3 mm and an 8 mm screw.
6Thread the cable through the opening in the side of the IP
Phone.
7Insert the clips on the IP Phone into the hinges on the footstand
and then press onto the front of the footstand until it snaps into
place.
8While squeezing the IP Phone tilt handle, swing the footstand
into position.

Using the wall-mount option
The IP Phone and IP Phone Key Expansion Module (KEM) combination
can be wall-mounted using the optional bracket kit provided. A second
KEM can be attached to the right side of the first KEM.
Adjusting the tilt base
The tilt base on the IP Phone 2002 cannot be adjusted. To match the
angle of the IP Phone and the Key Expansion Module (KEM), adjust the
tilt base on the KEM.
The IP Phone 2004 has an adjustable tilt base. Adjust the tilt of both the IP
Phone 2004 and the KEM, as needed.
Setup and assembly for the GEM
Nortel IP Phone Graphical Expansion Module (GEM) is provisioned
through both the CS2000/CS2100 and the Element Manager. The M522
line option on the CS2000/CS2100 enables provisioning of features on the
additional keys. The Element Manager data controls the GEM connection
to a terminal.
When attaching a GEM to the IP Phone 1100 Series terminal, it is
recommended that the phone is powered off prior to attaching the GEM.
When the GEM is attached and the user logs back into the CICM, the
GEM feature keys are available.
Without a GEM attached, the IP Phone 1100 Series terminals Up and
Down navigational buttons will transition feature key pages. With a GEM
attached and advanced GEM functionality turned on, the Up and Down
navigational buttons will transition pages on the GEM, and no longer
control the IP Phone 1100 feature key pages. With a GEM attached and
advanced GEM functionality turned off, the Up and Down navigational
buttons will transition pages on the GEM and the IP Phone 1100 feature
key pages.
To transition pages using the Up and Down navigational buttons on the IP
Phone 1100 Series terminal with attached GEM units, use the following
procedure:
•“Navigational Key transition for IP Phone 1120E” (page 20)
