Information quality
Nortel Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 customer documentation uses
three designations to indicate the quality verification level for the information.
Each designation indicates the quality testing level that the documentation
has passed.
The quality designations are as follows:
•Draft: Information is written and reviewed for technical content, but the
feature is still under development and change is expected
•Preliminary: Information is verified by the product support and product
verification organizations. Preliminary information is released to
customers for the purposes of trials and demos.
•Standard: All information is verified by product line management and is
consistent with market positioning and support. Standard information
is generally available and considered as the official documentation for
the release.

Text conventions
This section describes the text conventions used in the Metro Ethernet
Routing Switch 8600 documentation.
Text conventions provide an explanation of how text is formatted throughout
the customer documentation suite.
angle brackets (< >) Indicate that you choose the text to enter based on
the description inside the brackets. Do not type the
brackets when you enter the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
ping <ip_address>, you enter
ping 192.32.10.12
bold Courier
text Indicates command names and options and text that
you enter.
Example: Use the dinfo command.
Example: Enter show ip {alerts|routes}.
braces ({}) Indicate required elements in syntax descriptions
where there is more than one option. You must choose
only one of the options. Do not type the braces when
entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip {alerts|routes}, you must enter either
show ip alerts or show ip routes, but not
both.
brackets ([ ]) Indicate optional elements in syntax descriptions. Do
not type the brackets when entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip interfaces [-alerts], you can enter
either show ip interfaces or
show ip interfaces -alerts.

ellipsis points (. . . ) Indicate that you repeat the last element of the
command as needed.
Example: If the command syntax is
ethernet/2/1 [ <parameter> <value>
]..., you enter ethernet/2/1 and as many
parameter-value pairs as needed.
vertical line ( | ) Separates choices for command keywords and
arguments. Enter only one of the choices. Do not type
the vertical line when entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip {alerts|routes}, you enter either show
ip alerts or show ip routes, but not both.
italic text Indicates book titles and variables in command syntax
descriptions. Where a variable is two or more words,
the words are connected by an underscore.
Example: If the command syntax is
show at <valid_route> , valid_route is one
variable and you substitute one value for it.
plain Courier
text Indicates command syntax and system output, for
example, prompts and system messages.
Example: Set Trap Monitor Filters
separator ( > ) Shows menu paths.
Example: Protocols > IP identifies the IP option on the
Protocols menu.
Switch numerical ranges
Commands that require you to enter one or more port numbers on the
switch use the parameter <portlist> in the syntax. The following list specifies
the rules for using <portlist>:
•A<portlist> can be one port on a particular unit (for example, port
3:1).
•A<portlist> can be a range of numbers (for example, port 3:1-3:3).
•You can add additional unit and port numbers to the list, separated by a
comma (for example, port 3:1,4:8,6:10).
•You can specify all ports on a particular unit (for example, port 3:*).
•You can specify all ports on all units (for example, port * indicates all
ports on all units).
