Product Brief
Passport 8683 Packet-over-SONET (PoS)
Routing Switch Module
Bandwidth-hungry applications are
generating an increasing amount of
Wide Area Network (WAN) traffic.
The Nortel Networks* Passport* 8683
Packet-over-SONET (PoS) Routing
Switch module offers a backbone
architecture that supports the deployment
of eBusiness, multimedia and collaborative
applications.
The Passport 8683 PoS Routing Switch
module delivers Metropolitan Area
Network (MAN) and WAN support
for the Nortel Networks Passport 8600
Routing Switch by providing access to
SONET services in a metropolitan area
network. The Passport 8683 PoS module
offers customers a simple and cost-effective
way to interconnect campus locations
without compromising performance or
increasing complexity.
The Passport 8600 Routing Switch is
a key component of the Nortel Networks
Optical Ethernet solution delivering
Gigabit Ethernet performance and
Quality of Service (QoS) for business-
critical applications and services such as
Internet Telephony. It provides wire-speed
switching and routing over fiber and
copper media.
The Passport 8600 provides 128 Gbps
of switching capacity, a variety of 10/100,
Gigabit Ethernet, Packet over SONET
and ATM ports, and a high performance
infrastructure for core routing and
switching.
Passport 8683
PoS Benefits
• Provides SONET services in the MAN
• Aggregates high volume traffic
over fiber
• Offers a variety of port speeds
• Eliminates the need for costly SONET
multiplexors and external routers
2
Features
The Passport 8683 PoS Routing Switch
module is a baseboard with three slots
to house MDAs. There are four MDAs
available for the PoS baseboards:
• 1-port OC-12c/STM-4 MDA
for SingleMode SONET media
• 1-port OC-12c/STM-4 MDA
for MultiMode SONET media
• 2-port OC-3/STM-1 for MDA
for SingleMode SONET media
• 2-port OC-3/STM-4 for MDA
for MultiMode SONET media
The baseboard supports up to six
OC-3/STM-1 lines or up to three
OC-12c/STM-4 lines. MDAs can be
“mixed and matched” for customers
wishing to deploy various speeds on
the same baseboard. The recommended
number of PoS baseboards is four per
Passport 8000 chassis. Out of band
management is provided via a RJ-45 port.
Benefits
High Availability
The Passport 8683 PoS Routing Switch
module provides a new level of reliability
in the LAN/MAN. Redundancy features
include Distributed Multi-Link Trunking
and hot swappable baseboards.The module’s
SONET technology is ideal for aggregating
high volumes of traffic over fiber cable.
Operational Simplicity
The Passport 8683 PoS Routing
Switch module can be easily managed
and configured with Nortel Networks
Device Manager, a graphical switch
configuration tool. Device Manager
simplifies the setup of the Passport 8000
Routing Switch series, the Passport 1000
Routing Switch series, the Nortel
Networks Business Policy Switch 2000,
the Nortel Networks BayStack* 350,
the BayStack 410, and the BayStack 450.
Low ost of Ownership
By incorporating Packet over SONET
router functionality, the Passport 8600
transparently extends high performance
switching from one campus to another
within a MAN. This eliminates the
need for an external SONET router that
would add cost, increase complexity and
decrease performance.
Applications
Routing/Bridging between
Sites with SONET ADMs
Customers with existing SONET rings
can connect the Passport 8683 PoS
Routing Switch module to existing Add
Drop Multiplexors (ADM). This provides
a maximum level of connectivity with
minimal disruption in the backbone
(see Figure 1).
Interconnecting Sites
with Private/Leased
Fiber onnections
The Passport 8683 PoS allows customers
with unused or dark fiber laid between
campuses to bypasses SONET multiplexors
and the costs associated with implementing
a new SONET ring (see Figure 1).
IP over PPP connections
Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
are deploying routers at their point of
presence (POP). The Passport 8683 PoS
Routing Switch module allows customers
to lease an IP over PPP connection directly
from a service provider regardless of the
type of router being used (see Figure 1).
Great Reasons to
hoose the Nortel
Networks Passport 8000
Routing Switch
omprehensive
LAN/MAN Support
The Passport 8000 Routing Switch offers
a variety of LAN technologies including
10/100 Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet
connectivity. MAN technologies
include Packet over SONET, ATM
and extended Gigabit Ethernet.
Highly Redundant Solution
The Passport 8000 is redundant at
multiple layers. Physical redundancy is
accomplished with N+1 redundant power
supplies, hot swappable modules and
dual fan trays. Trunk level redundancy
is accomplished with Distributed Multi-
Link Trunking. Routing redundancy
is accomplished with Virtual Routing
Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)
and Equal Cost Multi-Path Routing
(ECMP), available in a future release.
ommon Management
Platform
Nortel Networks Device Manager and
the command line interface commands
are shared across the entire Passport 8000
platform. Using common applications
and monitoring tools dramatically
decreases the network administration
cost associated with configuring
individual devices.
