1. The System / Mode of action / area of applications
The novacare
LAS 500 Low Air Loss Therapy System is a true Low-air-Loss-
System“. It can be operated in static as well as in alternating mode.
Its technology is based on a high air stream, in connection with large air openings
of the cells. The result is an air cushion effect. It enables the patient to sink in
deeply, resulting in a reduced pressure Therefore the system is especially suited
for the application on pain-sensitive patients.
Contrary to ordinary alternating pressure system the alternating mode operates in
a 3 to 1 principle. The system alternately ventilates two cells, while it removes air
from the third one. This results in a very low partial bearing pressure in the
alternate mode as well.
The novacare
LAS 500 Low Air Loss Therapy System is a mattress
replacement system for clinical, stationary and ambulatory care-taking.
The system consists of a control unit with digital operating unit and a mattress
system with 18 arranged in a transverse manner.
2.
Severity of pressure ulcers
The novacare
LAS 500 Low Air Loss Therapy System is recommended for
pressure ulcer treatment up to decubitus degree 4 (EPUAP) / high risk to very high
risk.
3. Maximum recommended patient weight
In standard operation the novacare
LAS 500 Low Air Loss Therapy
System is recommended for a maximum patient weight of 180 kg.
An additional bariatric- / increased function permits applications for a patient
weight up to 320 kg. For extra comfort we recommend the use of an optional
120cm wide bariatric mattress.
4. Indications / Contraindications :
Indications Treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers and decubitus
especially for patients at high risk, as well as for heavy weight
patients.
Contraindications: Alternating pressure should be applied to pain or pain-
sensitive patients or in case of instable spinal cord injuries!

using the fixation hooks.
! The automatically retractable hooks adjust to the foot end of the bed and
provide a secure hold. Upon removal of the control unit the hooks
automatically retract to the original position..
3. Make sure that the connection tube is located at the foot end of the bed.
4. Using the belt, affix the complete mattress to the bed frame.
5. Now connect the trio-plug as well as the CPC ventilation plug of the mattress
connection tubes to the connection outlet located on the side of the control
unit. Make sure that all plugs connect properly.
6. Insert the power plug into a 220 V power outlet.
7. Now activate the main power switch (ON / OFF) located on the
right side of the control unit.

operating mode,
10. Duration of inflation is 2-5 min.
11. The „Cycle“- button sets the alternating intervals. This
function if only active in the “Alter” mode. Setting is achieved
in 5-minute increments (0-95 Min) by pushing the button.
Push the “Alter” Button to return to „5“.
12. Set patient weight by pushing the -/+ key.
Use setting chart for support.
13. The patient can now be placed onto the
mattress.
14. Now verify or correct the settings by conducting the manual check.
15. Please note that the system pressure might require adjustment when raising
the head rest section.
8. Lock – Function :
In order to prevent unauthorized changes in the default setting, the LAS 500
control unit is equipped with an automatic key lock function. It is automatically
activated after 3 minutes.

LAS_500_eng page 7
9. Backup – Function :
In case of power loss, the settings used last are saved. New adjustments after
power loss are not necessary.
10. Static mode:
Set the mode button to „Static” (LED – display „STATIC“ lights up).
The unit can be operated in static mode for special applications (i.e. pain
patients)
11. Bariatric- / Heavy weight function :
The novacare
LAS 500 Heavy weight therapy systems features a „Bariatric-
Function accommodating especially large patients. We recommend the use of
the bariatric mattress (optional) in combination with this function.
The mode is activated by pushing the BARIATRIC – Button. The “Bariatric” LED
lights up.
12. Use of CARE Function:
The LAS 500 control unit features a CARE Function. By
activating this function all chambers of the mattress system are
inflated with maximum system pressure for 30 min. After 30
min., for the safety of the patient, the system automatically
switches to the last selected mode.
This special function facilitates re-positioning of the patient during
care-taking.
13. Alarm function :
The unit features an acoustic power loss alarm. Power loss is signaled by intermittent
beeping.
This can be eliminated by turning the unit off (ON/OFF – Switch).

LAS_500_eng page 8
14. Practical Test
An optimal correct pressure setting permits the patient to sink into the mattress by
about 20 to 30% of the original cell height. In alternating mode a hand or lower arm
should be inserted effortlessly between patient and basic mattress into the respective
ventilated cell region. Under no circumstances may the patient hit the mattress
bottom.
15. System operation with one cell extracted:
The LAS 500 mattress system permits continued operation with one cell extracted.
Release the CPC coupling of the affected cell, remove the cell und lock the coupling
with a CPC sealing plug (optional, item no.: 991016). Ensure that it locks in place
properly.
Now the system can be used once again without difficulty.
The extracted cell can in re-inserted in the opposite sequence.
16. CPR - Valve :
The novacare
LAS 500 Low Air Loss Therapy System is equipped with a CPR
emergency valve. It permits a spontaneous deflation for example to conduct
reanimation. In this case set the valve to switch position „open“.
17. Caution note :
• Protect control unit from humidity and direct wetness
• Keep tubes free of bends
• Do not use system in the immediate proximity of a source of heat.
• When moving the bed pull out the power plug.
• Never pull the cord.
• Sharp objects must be kept away. Do not secure overlay with inappropriate
means.
• Do not operate system in the immediate proximity of flammable gases (risk of
explosion)
• Use only original spare parts and consumables.
• If side rails are used, ensure the adherence to the mandatory minimum
distance. Side rails need to be boosted if the minimum distance cannot be met.
