Winding schemata
TTX / Wildcats
The schema shows the usual winding
directions of material and ribbon. You must
follow this elementary schema when
inserting/changing material and ribbon.
You must also note the schemata on the
inside of the device cover.
Foil and material should be
inserted/changed by specially trained
personnel.

Materials
Document material
When selecting the material, attention should be paid to 3 factors:
– The abrasive behavior of the surface structure of the material.
– The properties relating to the chemical reaction when the printing ink is
applied.
– The temperature required for ink transfer.
Abrasive behavior If the material is very abrasive, the print head becomes "worn" sooner than
would normally be the case. This criterion is particularly critical in
thermoprinting. It is not so crucial in heat transfer printing, because in this
case the ribbon can be chosen a little wider than the material and thus the
print head is protected across the whole width of the material (see printer
layout).
Head temperature More or less the same applies in the case of a high print head temperature.
The material and ribbon need more time to cool down, the print quality is
more critical and the print head wears down more quickly.
For papers weighing more than 240 g, adjustments may need to be made
to the contact pressure and the position of the print head.
Thermoprinting ribbon
For ribbon, we recommend the following:
– The rear of the ribbon must be given an antistatic and friction-reducing
coating (back-coating).
– Foils must be specified for "near edge type print heads".
– Foils should be suitable for print speeds of up to 12 inch/sec.
Foils without these properties could reduce the performance of the print
and the print quality and also damage the print head!
Note The print head zero line can be adjusted from 2 to 13 mm away from the
left edge of the label. The setting also affects the horizontal position of the
print image.
The ribbon zero line can also be adjusted towards the label zero line.

Inserting material
1. Open the lid of the device.
TTX / Wildcats
2. Pull off the outer guide disk (1) of the
unwinder (2).
3. Place material with the corresponding
adapter rings on the unwinder.
The roll of material should rotate anti-
clockwise while unwinding.
4. Attach the outer guide disk of the
unwinder.
5. Lay material around the dancer arm.
6. Depress the red lever (3) of the intake to
raise the nip rollers slightly. With the
lever (3) depressed, push the start of the
material through the material guide until
it is under the print head.
7. Align the material so that it is taken in
straight. Position the nip rollers of the
print unit after depressing the lever (3)
so that both rollers are sitting
symmetrically on the material. Let go off
the lever (3) again.
Do not press your free hand against the
print module! The cutter (optional) could
cause injuries if the keys are
operated incorrectly.
There is a danger of fingers,
hair, clothing, jewellery etc. being caught
up in the intake area of the transport
unit.

1. To gain access to the material
unwinder (1), tilt the additional
support (2) away to the side.
2. Then insert the material as described
above.
3. Finally, put the support back in position.
TDI / STDI / XXTREME
1. Move the magazine down by pressing
ON/OFF + CUT.
2. Place strips into the magazine up to the
left/rear stop.
3. Move the magazine up by pressing
ON/OFF + FEED.
4. Set the lateral material guides (red) on
the print module to the width of the
material. The material must be able to
slide smoothly and without play in the
guide.
Inserting Leporello
material
1. Remove the cover of the material inlet
opening using two screws (on the rear of
the device next to the interface
connections).
2. Set the outer disk of the material
unwinder to the width of the material.
3. Pull the material, with the side for
printing facing up, through the inlet
opening to the material guide.
4. Then proceed as described in the
section "Inserting material".

Changing material
1. Switch the printer to Offline mode and
press the FEED button briefly to lift the
print head.
2. To remove the material, press the
opener and pull the material out towards
the rear at the same time.
TTX / Wildcats
The material can also be moved out of
the print module automatically by
pressing ON/OFF + CUT.
TDI / STDI / XXTREME
1. Move the magazine down by pressing
ON/OFF + FEED.
2. Remove material from the unwinder or
magazine.
3. Then proceed as described in the
section "Inserting material".

Inserting/changing ribbon
TTX / Wildcats
1. Open the lid of the printer.
2. Place the roll of ribbon on the right
ribbon mandrel (1) so that the ribbon
unwinds anti-clockwise.
3. Push the empty ribbon core onto the left
mandrel (2).
4. Introduce the end of the ribbon at an
angle from the front under the print head
bracket and between the cutter guard
and the print head bracket.
5. Then pull the ribbon upwards and lay it
over the deflection pin (3).
6. Guide the ribbon round the transport
roller anti-clockwise and fix it to the
ribbon core (you may need to wrap the
ribbon round once so that the glued part
at the start of ribbon is usable).
7. Check the ribbon for creases and make
sure it is running true. Tension the
ribbon by hand if necessary.
TDI / STDI / XXTREME
Press CUT in Offline mode, so the
display shows FOIL.
You can then push the ribbon forward
with the ON/OFF button.
Press FEED to return to Offline mode.
There is a danger of fingers, hair,
clothing, jewellery etc. being
caught up in the intake area of
the transport unit.

The ribbon mechanism is reinforced by
a support, similar to that for the material
unwinder. This support (1) must be tilted
away before the ribbon is changed.
The ribbon can then be changed as
described above.
Finally, put the support (1) back in
position.
Setting the ribbon tautness
The two ribbon mandrels carry plastic caps at
their ends (4).
Remove the caps (4) before the setting.
The torsional moments of the ribbon unwind
mandrel (1) and ribbon rewind mandrel (2)
can be set from the front using the red plastic
hexagon (3) on the ribbon mandrels. Turning
clockwise increases the torsional moment.
The ribbon must run evenly and without
creases over the entire length between the
pins while it is being advanced.
To reduce the unwind/rewind moment:
The ribbon must not become loose or
creased.
To increase the unwind/rewind moment:
The ribbon must not visibly elongate or
tear during printing.
The default setting covers a wide range of
different ribbon widths, but an adjustment may
need to be made in the case of very narrow or
very wide foils.

Material photoelectric
switch
General information
A variety of photoelectric switches is available,
depending on the device.
•TDI/STDI/XXTREME:
– Transmitted light barrier
– Reflected light barrier
•TTX:
– Transmitted light barrier
– Reflected light barrier
– Full-size light barrier
There is a difference of 11 mm (in the x-
direction, and additive) between the
transmitted light barrier and the reflected light
barrier (optional).
The full-size light barrier (optional) lies behind
the standard light barriers and can scan labels
with perforations. Scanning can take place at
almost any place on the label by means of a
movable sensor block. The minimum label
width is reduced to approx. 38 mm.
Setting
The photoelectric switch (transmitted light or
reflected light) can be adjusted over a range
of 15 mm transverse to the material by means
of the red knob (1) on the front of the print
module.
There is a scale (2) from 0 to 15 on the red
knob.
The set value is calculated as follows:
Punch position - 2 mm = set value
– Punch position:
measured from the left edge of the label
– Set value:
scale value on the knob
Example: Center of the punch from left edge =
11 mm, less 2 mm gives a set value of
9 mm.
For round labels, the punch offset can be set
manually on the printer (parameter PUNO) or
via selection so that the start of the label is
correctly recorded.

Adjusting the print head contact
pressure
Different material widths and/or thicknesses
have an influence on the contact pressure of
the thermal strip on the feed roller.
The contact pressure can be set in 3 steps:
1 Position for thin/narrow material
2 Position for medium material
3 Position for thick/wide material
To set:
The red adjusting screw (4) sits above the
ribbon rewind mandrel in a recess in the front
panel and can be turned by means of a coin.
Default setting:
Position 1 for thin/narrow material
To obtain a medium contact pressure,
turn the arrow to position 2 until it
engages.
To obtain a greater contact pressure,
turn the arrow to position 3 until it
engages.
You should always work with the least
contact pressure at which the print
quality is sufficient. This protects the
print head and the whole device.
Excessive contact pressure can lead to
premature wear of the print head.

Adjusting the print head position
The print head 0-line can be variably adjusted
from 2 mm (from the left edge of the label) to
13 mm
(does not apply for TTX450/S45/Puma).
1. Undo the thumb screw and push the
print head to the desired position.
The print head must not be detached!
2. Tighten the screw again.
3. Use a 2 mm Allen key to loosen the
black plastic disks (on the ribbon rewind
and unwind pins).
4. Adjust the plastic disks to the same
position as the inside of the print head.
5. Tighten the screw again.
Setting the material
thickness
TDI / STDI / XXTREME
To draw in strip labels, you must make an
adjustment for thin or thick materials.
The adjusting wheel (1) is located between
the paper pull-off from the magazine and the
red material guide in a recess in the base
panel. It can be recognized by the plastic
arrows (2) which are attached to it in red,
yellow and green.
Turn clockwise for thin material (error:
two and more labels are being inserted)
Turn anti-clockwise for thick material
(error: no label is being inserted)
The colored plastic arrows enable you to mark
the various material thicknesses if different
grades of material are to be processed.
A position can be changed by keeping hold of
the adjusting wheel while moving the plastic
arrow at the same time.

Installing options
General information
Installation must only be carried out by
trained personnel!
Some options (e.g. the dispensing
module, short tag option) must only be
integrated into a device by technicians
authorized by the manufacturer.
Please note that this is only possible
from a certain serial number of the
device.
Switch the device off and unplug from
the mains before starting servicing work.
Further information about fitting and
setting up options can be obtained from
the relevant manual.
Color option
(not for TTX 350)
The color option is a special case. To be able
to use this option, special firmware must be
transferred to the printer and an additional
sensor must be fitted (see Color Manual).
Short tag option
(TDI/STDI/XXTREME only)
The short tag option ensures that short labels
(from 50 mm) can be processed in the device.
(A tag is a type of label)
The option is an auxiliary feed which is driven
by the feed axle. The label is ejected at the
separating edge, led to the auxiliary feed,
taken over there and finally led to the main
feed.
This option can be retrofitted
(from SN 6800131605).
Fonts
The fonts of the printer are what are known as
proportionally-spaced fonts. For reasons to do
with the standard, only OCR fonts are not
proportionally-spaced fonts.
Proportionally-spaced means that each
character takes up a different width. This
produces a reader-friendly typeface. Fonts
which are not proportionally spaced have the
same width for every character.
