1Board Overview
1.1 Product Introduction
The development platform for i.MX 6Quad from element14 (built to the Free cale® SABRE Lite de ign) i an
evaluation platform featuring the powerful i.MX 6Q, a multimedia application proce or with Quad ARM
Cortex-A9 core at 1.2 GHz from Free cale Semiconductor. The platform help evaluate the rich et of
peripheral and include a 10/100/Gb Ethernet port, SATA-II, HDMI v1.4, LVDS, parallel RGB interface,
touch creen interface, analog headphone/microphone, micro TF and SD card interface, USB, erial port,
JTAG, camera interface, and input key for Android, a hown in Figure 1-1.
The SABRE Lite can be u ed in the following application :

•Nettop (Internet de ktop device )
•High-end mobile Internet device (MID)
•High-end PDA
•High-end portable media player (PMP) with HD video capability

2.1 Unpacking the Kit
The SABRE Lite development kit i hipped with the item li ted in Table 2-1. Remove the circuit board
from the conductive bag and perform a vi ual in pection.

2.3.2 Connect RS-232 cable
Connect the cu tom erial cable provided to erial port J17, and then u e cro erial cable to connect to
the ho t computer.
Open a terminal window on the ho t (eg. Hyperterminal) with erial port configuration: 115.2 kbaud, 8
data bit , 1 top bit, with no parity.
2.3.3 Connect USB OTG (optional)
Connect the cable from the kit to micro USB connector J3 on the board.
2.3.4 Connect the ower Supply
Plug in the 5Vdc upply to power jack J10, the power LED (D1) hould illuminate.
To re-boot, pre the re et button SW4.

3.1 Processor
The i.MX 6Dual/6Quad proce or repre ent Free cale Semiconductor’ late t achievement in integrated
multimedia application proce or , which are part of a growing family of multimedia-focu ed product that
offer high performance proce ing and are optimized for lowe t power con umption.
The proce or feature Free cale’ advanced implementation of the quad ARM™ Cortex-A9 core, which
operate at peed up to 1GHz. They include 2D and 3D graphic proce or , 3D 1080p video proce ing, and
integrated power management. Each proce or provide a 64-bit DDR3/LVDDR3-1066 memory interface and a
number of other interface for connecting peripheral , uch a WLAN, Bluetooth™, GPS, hard drive, di play ,
and camera en or .

The board ha 1GB of SDRAM (4x256MB). The H5TQ2G63BFR i a 256MB DDR3 Synchronou DRAM, ideally
uited for the main memory application which require large memory den ity and high bandwidth.

The erial EPROM SST25VF016B i a 16Mb SPI Serial Fla h u ed for boot code torage. Booting from erial
EPROM i recommended.
3.2.3 KSZ9021RN
The KSZ9021RN i a ingle-port 10/100/1000Ba e-T Gigabit tran ceiver in indu try’ malle t footprint,
upporting data tran fer over tandard CAT-5 un hielded twi ted pair cable. Thi device offer robu t
performance and low power con umption. On-chip integration of termination re i tor and LDO controller,
along with built-in diagno tic feature , ignificantly reduce the co t and the complexity of Gigabit Ethernet
application . Thi device i ideal for enabling Gigabit Ethernet performance in SOHO and SMB networking
application , uch a SOHO media center, wired/wirele Gigabit SOHO/SMB router, and VoIP gateway.
The SABRE Lite can be connected to a network hub directly through a cable. It al o can be directly connected
with a computer through a cro over cable which i provided with the kit.

The USB2514 hub i a family of low-power, OEM configurable, MTT (multi tran action tran lator) hub

3.2.6 ICL3232CVZ
The Inter il ICL32XX X interface IC operate from a ingle +3V to +5.5V upply, guarantee a 250kbp minimum
data rate, require only four mall external 0.1µF capacitor , feature low power con umption, and meet all ElA
RS-232C and V.28 pecification . Targeted application are PDA , Palmtop , and notebook and laptop
computer where the low operational and even lower tandby, power con umption i critical.
3.2.7 TJA1040T
The TJA1040, a High Speed CAN tran ceiver i the interface between the Controller Area Network (CAN)
protocol controller and the phy ical bu . It i primarily intended for high peed application , up to 1MBaud, in
pa enger car . The device provide differential tran mit capability to the bu and differential receive
capability to the CAN controller.

3.3 Hardware Interface
3.3.1 ower Input Jack
The 5V/4A AC-to-DC power upply that come with the board i plugged into the Power Jack (J10) on the
board. It is not recommended to use a higher voltage since possible damage to the board may result due to
failure of the protection circuitry.

A SATA 7-pin data connector (J21) i provided on the Quick Start Board and i connected to the SATA
module of the i.MX6 proce or. The SABRE Lite board i capable of communicating with any tandard SATA
device, uch a a hard drive or optical DVD/CD reader. The SATA data cable i plugged into the SABRE Lite

The SABRE Lite board provide a 3.5mm tereo connector for a microphone input, a hown in Figure 3-8. A
mono microphone will input it ignal though the tip of the 3.5mm plug.
