1. Hoop your fabric and backing.
2. Sew the pattern/placement. PHOTO 1
3. Place a piece of appliqué fabric over the pattern/placement so that it is completely covered.
4. Sew the trim stitch/tackdown.
5. Carefully cut away the excess appliqué fabric.PHOTO 2

SUPPLIES:
Embroidery Thread:
• Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin as the needle.
Needles:
• Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for extended needle
life.
Stablilizer:
• Usewater-soluablestabilizerorlmwater-solublestabilizer.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer.
2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of
your choice.
3. Stitch the design.
4. Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from the
hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the design.
5. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry.
HANDY HINTS:
• DO NOT RINSE away all of the stabilizer for a
“stiffer” lace. Note that the thread may appear a shade
darker if stabilizer is not removed completely.
• If you happen to wash too much out, easily re-stiffen
by diluting some stabilizer scraps in water and dipping
the item in the solution.
Drying Lace:
• Lay lace piece with right side down to dry. This will
minimize the tendancy for the lace to curl.
GENERAL FREESTANDING LACE GUIDELINES
Handy tips:
• Apairof tweezers,hemostats,stilettooratiny
crochet hook can be extremely helpful when
inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (Please
see Diagram 1 for explanation of “buttonette”
and “eyelet” and “hinge line”.)
• Insertthetipof thetweezers,hemostats
or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the
buttonette and pull through the eyelet.
• Astilettocouldbeusedto“push”the
buttonette through the eyelet.
• Thelacelooksbestwhenlefttodrycompletely.
Besuretoattenthepieceoutentirelyand
allow ample time to dry.
• If itembecomestoolimptoworkwith,dissolve
scrap pieces of water-soluble stabilizer in warm
water and apply to the item to re-stiffen.
• Alternativelyyoucanirontheappliquépieceson
the wrong side while applying spray starch. After
ironing, spray again with starch and allow to
dry completely. This will stiffen the lace pieces
nicely and aid in construction.

•Follow the GeneralFreestandingLaceGuidelines

(page3)andstitchtheelevenpiecesrequiredas
listed in the summary above.
•Attach the front wall to the side wall by
inserting the three buttonettes along the right
side of the front wall into the three eyelets of
the left wall. Repeat this process to attach the
front wall to the chimney wall. Photo A
•Attach the foundation by inserting a buttonette
on the foundation into the eyelet at the bottom
center of the front wall, side wall and chimney

•Attach to the back wall to the side wall by
inserting the three buttonettes along the right
side of the back wall into the three eyelets of

•Assemble the porch. Attach the porch to the
pillars by inserting the buttonettes of the porch

• Attach the assembled porch to the front wall by
insertingthebuttonettesof theporchoorinto
the eyelets along the bottom of the front wall. Next
connect the single eyelet on the short edge of each
pillar into the eyelet on each edge of the front wall.

Donotremovepillarswhenattachingassembledporch.
• Attach the front roof panel. Starting at the top, insert
the buttonettes on the left wall to the eyelets of the
frontroof panel.Workyourwayacrossthefrontwall
and up the right wall. Finish by inserting the buttonettes of the porch
supports to the eyelets found in the front corners of the front roof

• Attach the chimney. Starting at the bottom right of the chimney,
insert the buttonettes of the chimney to the eyelets of the right wall.
Alternate left and right buttonettes and work upward toward the roof.
Leave the chimney top unbuttoned. Photo G
• Attach the back roof panel. Start by inserting the three buttonettes of
the top edge of the front roof panel into the three eyelets of the top
edge of the back roof panel. After this begin at the top buttonette
ontheleftwall,nearthechimney.Workdowntheleftwall,across
the back wall and up the right wall by inserting the buttonettes of the
walls to the corresponding eyelets on the back roof panel.
• Insert the three buttonettes along the left side of the back wall to the eyelets on the left wall.
• Insert the single buttonette of the foundation into the eyelet of the back wall.
• Complete the chimney by inserting the two buttonettes of the left wall of the chimney into the eyelets on the back wall of

• Your Free Standing Lace Cottage is complete!
To assemble the Cottage Arch
• The arch is actually formed with the “wrong side” outward. This is done this way so the stone foot
path is presented with the “right side” up and so that the trellis archway stands upright correctly.
• Form the arch when the lace is still slightly damp. Pinch the two “hinge lines” together and apply
a light downward pressure to the top of the arch formed. Be sure the “wrong side” is facing
outward or the arch way will attempt to collapse even if completely dry. Set down and allow the
trellis to dry completely. Photo I
• Insert buttonettes on the stone foot patch to the eyelets on the arched trellis.
• Your Freestanding Lace Garden Trellis Archway is now complete.
To set up Cottage Fence
• Fencepanelsshouldbedriedasataspossible.Afterdrybendthetabsata90degreeangletocreatesupports.Bend
fence panels at the hinge line to create corner pieces.
• If desired, sew the fence panels together for increased stability, or leave them as individual panels for more versatility.
