ALARM light - On continuously indicates paper out. Flashing
indicates a hardware fault.
QUIET light - On indicates quiet mode has been enabled.
POWER light - On indicates that power is turned on.
MENU light - On continuously indicates the menu mode has been
entered. Flashing indicates a thermal condition on the print head.
There are also LED indicators for print quality and cpi selections.
Some operator keys are dual-function keys. In the normal operating
mode, the keys perform the functions of the labels at the tops of the
keys. In the menu mode, the keys perform the functions of the labels
at the bottom of the keys.
SEL-MENU/EXIT key - Pressing this key toggles the printer online
and offline. Pressing this key while holding the SHIFT key enters
and exits the menu mode.
SHIFT key - Press this key in conjunction with other keys to access
secondary functions. It is only active when the printer is deselected.
LINE FEED/GROUP key - In the normal operating mode, pressing
this key advances paper one line at the current lpi setting. In the
menu mode, pressing this key allows group selection. Holding this
key on power up will print a font test. Pressing this key while holding
the SHIFT key will move the form down in micro-increments.
FF-LOAD/ITEM key - In the normal operating mode, pressing this
key will advance paper to the next top-of-form. In the menu mode,
pressing this key allows item selections. Pressing this key while
holding the SHIFT key will move the paper up in micro-increments.

PARK/PRINT key - In the normal operating mode, pressing this key
will park continuous forms in the tractor. Pressing this key while
holding the SHIFT key will print a list of menu settings for the current
emulation.
QUIET/TOF key - In the normal operating mode, pressing this key
will put the printer in a quiet mode of operation. In the normal
operating mode and offline, pressing this key will set the top-of-form
at the current paper position. In the menu mode, pressing this key
will print a rolling ASCII self-test.
PRINT QUALITY key - Pressing this key will toggle print quality
selections between NLQ (near letter quality), UTL (utility), and HSD
(high speed draft).
CHARACTER PITCH key - Pressing this key will toggle character
per inch (cpi) selections as indicated. Pressing this key while holding
the SHIFT key will reset the printer.
Self-test
ROLLING ASCII SELF-TEST - Holding the QUIET key down while
turning on power will start the test. This test prints a header with the
printer model, firmware revision, firmware part number, and
emulation. Then it prints a barber pole pattern. Press the SEL key to
stop the test.
FONT TEST - Holding the LINE FEED key while powering on the
printer will activate this test. This test prints the same header as the
rolling ASCII and follows with a list of available fonts.
HEX DUMP - Hex dump is a diagnostic test used to troubleshoot
data problems. Enter hex dump by holding the SEL and FF/LOAD
keys while powering on the printer. The printer will print any
incoming data in a hexadecimal format on the left, while printing its
ASCII equivalent on the right. Any control characters will be printed
on the right as a period.
PRINT HEAD ADJUST TEST - This test must be performed if the
print head or control board is replaced. It must also be performed
when the gap between the print head and platen is adjusted.
Remove the paper and leave the ribbon installed. Turn on the printer
while holding down the TEAR and QUIET keys. The self-adjust test

Printer Configuration
To print a configuration, enter the menu mode by pressing theSEL
key while holding the SHIFT key. Then press the PARK key and a

setting, press the GROUP key until the group containing the item is
printed. Then press the ITEM key until the desired item is printed.

key to exit the menu mode and save settings.
Adjustments
Print Head Gap - Remove the upper cover, pull roller assembly,
ribbon, print head, and ribbon protector. Reinstall the print head.
Turn the paper path lever to the rear position and rotate the platen
by hand. Set the gap change gear to position 2 by turning the adjust
screw. While turning the adjust screw, move the carriage to the right
for clockwise movement and to the left for counterclockwise
movement. Slide the carriage to the left side of the platen and check
the gap with a feeler guage. The gap should be .014" +/- .001". To
adjust the gap, use a straightened paper clip to push down on the
adjust gear to disengage it from the idle gear. Turn the adjustment
screw clockwise to increase the gap and counterclockwise to
decrease the gap. Check the right side in the same manner.
Common Problems and Solutions
Print Quality - Poorly formed characters, light print, and missing
dots can be caused by an incorrect print head gap, defective print
head, defective ribbon, print head cables, or control board.
Paper Motion - Paper motion problems can be caused by
obstructions in the paper path, defective drive gearing, defective
paper feed motor, defective control board, or improper print head
gap.
Communication - No communication or incorrect data. Check to
ensure printer and host configurations match. If the configuration
matches, replace the serial I/F or the control PCB.
Alarms
Print head (thermal) - Menu light flashes and printing halts. Normal
condition after long job or heavy printing. If unrecoverable after a
cooling period, replace the print head and/or control board.
Paper end - Alarm light remains on and printing halts. Check that
paper is loaded and covering the groove on the left end of the
platen. Also check for a broken or jammed paper out lever, or a
defective control PCB.
