EVOLT E-500 Digital SLR
There’s a first time for everything.
And for digital SLR cameras, this is the first time that so many leading-edge
breakthroughs have gone hand-in-hand with user-friendly innovations.
From our patented dust-reduction technology for spot-free photos, to our
exclusive 8.0 megapixel CCD.
From our advanced TruePic TURBO™ processor that helps you capture
spectacular, color-rich images to a large, 2.5” high-resolution LCD. From the
largest selection of digital-specific lenses to dual memory slots for storing
your images – EVOLT E-500’s array of features is unparalleled and always
easy to use.
At first glance, EVOLT E-500 is surprisingly compact. Pick it up and discover
it’s lighter than you imagined.
Photo enthusiasts will find EVOLT E-500 to be a refreshing throwback to a
time you could actually grab a camera and not let it slip through your fingers.
Beginners will view EVOLT E-500 as a powerful combination of advanced
technologies that can help them master digital photography.
Get your hands on EVOLT E-500. The most full-featured digital SLR in its class.
Capture a world without dust.
You’ll be amazed what’s out there.
Have you ever looked inside a camera? The amount of dust collected would startle you.
That’s because – prior to the E-series – dust entered from daily use, especially when lenses
were changed. The result was a spot or two on each photo, cast by “dust shadows” from the
imager’s pixels. It was unavoidable and unsightly, until now.
The problem is common. The solution is exclusive.
Our exclusive dust-reduction technology brings you spot-free photos, automatically. Each
time the camera is turned on, our Super Sonic Wave Filter™ shakes up the digital world as
we know it, by shaking dust and debris loose from the image sensor – and capturing it, to
prevent its reappearance. Situated between shutter and CCD, it vibrates over 35,000 times
asecond. As a result, dust particles cannot block light – ensuring unblemished pictures,
with each press of the shutter button.
With the E-500’s Dust Reduction System, changing lenses in the field (or in your family
room) won’t ruin your images. Your photos will be spot-free, without you needing to
retouch them on a computer.
Patented Dust Reduction Technology
The new EVOLT E-500 features our exclusive dust-reduction technology for spot-free photos.
With undetectable vibrations, it shakes dust and debris loose from the image sensor
thousands of times each second. Rather than shadows and imperfections, clear images are all
you’ll see.
Patented Dust Reduction Technology for Spot-Free Photos
You’ll have what it takes to
capture sharp, detailed photos
you’ll be proud to enlarge.
Outstanding Image Quality
In the elite circle of outstanding digital SLRs, the number of megapixels is just one measure of
acamera’s ability. EVOLT E-500 produces superior images and an extraordinary photographic
experience, for many additional reasons, as well.
Brilliance and speed, from edge to edge.
•The 8 megapixel sensor in the EVOLT E-500 has earned wide acclaim for producing a full
range of color, sharp and subtle contrast, as well as fine detail – with minimal noise.
•Our Four-Thirds type CCD achieves the dynamic range and sensitivity that professional
photographers demand – in a camera anyone can use. So regardless of skill level, you’ll be
fully capable of creating brighter, more colorful photos.
•Thanks to our exclusive, next-generation TruePic TURBOTM Image Processor, you’ll get
crystal clear images quickly – and won’t face all-too familiar shutter delays or slow startup
times. TruePic’s responsive, accelerated performance translates to briefer shot-to-shot
times and swifter image playback of smooth, colorful and detailed images.
•Total compatibility with the largest selection of precision-crafted Zuiko®Digital-Specific
Lenses allows E-500 to faithfully produce images of the highest quality. These lenses and
their unique benefits are described in greater detail, later on.
•The detailed vibrant colors of this 8.0 megapixel CCD – coupled with the TruePic TURBO
Image Processor – helps you enlarge prints to all sizes supported by your printer.
Outstanding Image Quality
You deserve the sharpest,
most detailed photos. That’s why
you needall-digital lenses.
Digital-Specific Lenses
In the future, people may laugh, for most digital SLR cameras still use 35mm film lenses. At
Olympus, the future has already arrived, with the largest selection of digital-specific lenses
anywhere. Even when using the largest apertures, these lenses help you produce super-
sharp, bright and colorful images from one edge of your photo to the other.
Leading-edge technology yields edge-to-edge consistency.
The EVOLT E-500 is fully compatible with the largest selection of world-class optics –
precision-crafted digital-specific Zuiko®lenses – designed specifically for digital excellence.
With each pristine-glass lens perfectly matched to the camera’s image sensor, light is received
by each pixel. So you’ll see crisper, more accurate results all across your photographs.
To correct potential distortions automatically, these Zuiko lenses directly communicate
with the camera through their own internal CPU.
You’ll not only enjoy an extra measure of quality and accuracy – the kind that film lenses
simply cannot match – but you’ll appreciate the compact, go-anywhere styling of this
versatile line of digital lenses.
See for yourself – with all digital-lenses precisely matched to the EVOLT E-500's image
sensor, your photos will have the same degree of clarity, brightness and detail at their edges
as they do in the center.
Digital-Specific Lenses
Abigger,brighter LCD you can
view from almost anyangle.
Smart Ergonomics
With an over-sized, easy-to-view 2.5” HyperCrystal™ LCD monitor, EVOLT E-500 treats
your eyes to high-contrast viewing from wider angles. To further indulge you, the
surprisingly lightweight body offers intelligent ergonomics – giving each finger on your
shooting hand a place to rest.
Apleasure to behold: Our largest, brightest LCD.
The EVOLT E-500’s HyperCrystal LCD is among the largest in its class – a generously-sized 2.5”. It
also packs as many pixels as any LCD display, affording you outstanding color and contrast, with a
full 160-degree viewing angle, from left to right and up and down. This adds up to a greater “degree”
of comfort, whether you’re navigating the menus or enjoying the shots you’ve already taken.
The larger LCD also makes the control panel easier to view – adding size and clarity to the
letters and icons.
Apleasure to hold: Our lightest SLR ever.
Designed with advanced polycarbonates, EVOLT E-500 possesses uncompromising strength
and durability – to stand up to everyday use and even support the 300mm f2.8 Zuiko Digital
Lens. Yet EVOLT E-500 is extremely lightweight – so you’ll find it easy to carry and handle.
Our automatic pop-up flash maintains a “no-profile” until it recognizes the need for added
light. Once engaged, the flash pops up and gives you the opportunity to make adjustments
and select from a range of options – including red-eye reduction.
Smart Ergonomics
It’s easy to select a mode.
Even easier to enjoy the results.
There will always be times when you’d prefer the camera do the work. Especially when
EVOLT E-500 makes it so simple to capture pixel-perfect images by selecting a mode suited
to your environment.
With the right mode, you can do anything.
For those times (or spur-of-the moment opportunities), EVOLT E-500 presents an array of
pre-set and user-adjustable shooting modes.
There are 15 easy modes where you do nothing more than select the “scene.” Just use the
menu and choose Beach and Snow, Sunset, Portrait, Night Scene, Candlelight, Landscape,
Children and more.
To assume a bit more control, yet still let the camera select the aperture and shutter speed (or
everything), there are six basic modes: Auto, Landscape, Portrait, Night-Scene Portrait, Macro
and Action/Sports.
When you feel like taking complete control, you can do so with EVOLT E-500’s creative modes:
Program (the camera automatically sets lens aperture and shutter speed), Aperture Priority
(you select aperture – the camera sets the appropriate shutter speed for the exposure),
Shutter Priority (you select shutter speed – the camera sets the appropriate aperture for the
exposure) and Manual (where you select shutter speed and aperture).
Advanced Shooting Modes
Advanced Shooting Modes
Regardless of your skill level or environment, EVOLT E-500 offers a full complement of features
and controls. In fact, with its introduction, it showcases more superior functions and sensible
ergonomics than any digital SLR in its class.
Everything you need to shoot for excellence.
Dual Media Slots – For increased storage flexibility, switch between CF and xD-Picture Cards when
one becomes full. Or use the camera’s menu to copy an image onto both, for backup purposes.
Auto Focus – Choose from left, center or right AF points. Activate them automatically or select
them manually. The system’s high-precision super-imposed display lets you to confirm target
zones easily. To focus in dim light or darkness, an AF illuminator is built into the flash. Choose
from five focus modes: C-AF, S-AF, MF, S-AF+ MF, C-AF+MF.
White Balance – The exclusive one-touch WB button at the back of EVOLT E-500 helps you
make settings, with ease. Also choose from White Balance and Preset White Balance (for
daylight, cloudy, shade, tungsten, fluorescent and more). Select settings from 2000K to 7500K
–with additional fine-tuning available to each, in seven steps.
Noise Reduction – This function utilizes a proprietary Olympus algorithm to detect and
eliminate fixed noise that can appear on long-exposure images, like a bulb exposure at night.
High-Precision Flash Controls – With seven flash modes, you can be highly selective: Auto,
Red-Eye Reduction, Slow Synchro and Red-Eye Reduction, Slow Synchro first curtain, Slow
Synchro second curtain, forced flash and flash off. Thanks to EVOLT E-500’s auto pop-up flash,
there’s never any need to lift the flash manually. For daylight fill or flash synchronization above
1/180th second – with available external flashes (FL-36 and FL-50) – choose FP Flash.
