1.1Description
TheCN616Seriesisasecondgenerationofindustrialtemperature
controllersbasedonthefieldprovenCN100sixzonetemperature
monitor/alarmsystem.Twomodelsareavailable,standardandex-
tendedrange.
TheCN616Seriesisamicroprocessorbasedtemperaturecontroller,
whichacceptssignalsfromthermocouples.Sixzonesaresequentially
scannedat15readingspersecond[@60Hz]anddisplayedwitha
selectabledisplayrateof1to40secondseachzone.Asingleoutput
relayisprovidedtoindicateanalarmconditiononanyonezone.Six
PIDtimeproportionaloron/offoutputs areprovidedtocontrolsix
zones.The faceplatehasbeenarrangedtocallattentiontoanalarm
conditionbyflashingthemaintemperaturedisplayandindicatingthe
zoneinalarmwithaflashingzonenumberdisplay.TheCN616Series
implementsasecuritypasswordtoprotectallfunctions.

Onpowerupthecontrollerentersoneofthreerunmodesdeterminedby
modelconfiguration(function[71]33)

Eachzonerunsasanindependentcontroller,exceptforPIDparameters,
(proportionalband,resetandrate)andoutputcycletimewhichare
commontoallzones.Inon/offmodehysteresisiscommontoallzones.
AnyzonecanbedisabledorsettorununderPIDcontroloron/off
control(heatingorcooling)independentofotherzones.Ifallzonesare
disabled,zone1willbeenabledbydefault.
Eachzonecanbesetuptorunasastandardcontrol,setindependently
withfunction[36],orasaprofileofupto20segmentssetbyfunctions
[01] to [20].

TheCN616has4alarmoptionssetbymodelselectfunction[33].

OverheatorHialarmistriggeredbytemperaturegoingoverthe
setpointbeyondboundarysetbythehialarmsetpoint.Totriggerthe

alarmthetemperaturemuststayinalarmconditionforafew
seconds.Thisistopreventafalsealarm.
UnderheatorLoalarmisdisableduntil enabledzonereachandstay
overthesetpointforasettime.Thisistopreventalarmwhenstarting
fromcold.WhenLoalarmisenableditwillbetriggeredonlywhen
confirmedovertimesameasHialarm.
Hi-LoworksthesameasOverheatandUnderheatalarms.
NoAlarmdisablesbothHiand Loalarms.
Whenanyzonegoesintoanalarmconditionzonescanlockisdisabled,
andwhenthealarmzoneisdisplayedthetemperaturedisplaywillflash.
HialarmisindicatedbyflashingleftfunctiondigitwhileLoalarmis
indicatedbyflashingrightfunctiondigit.Incaseoflatchingalarm,Hi
alarmtakesprecedenceandHialarmwillshowevenifbothalarmsare
latched.
Note!Wheneverthe“Run”Modeisexitedtosetorpoweroffall
alarmsarereset.
Autotune
ThePIDcontrolconstantsthatarethesame for all zones programmed
forPIDMode. Autotuning can be done on any onezoneselectedfor
theAutotuning. The systemparametersaremeasured duringautotuning
bysupplyingfullpoweroutputtothesystemuntilthe autotuningsetpoint
isreached,thenthe output power is switched Off allowing the tempera-
turetoovershootandthendropdown freely back to the autotuning
setpoint.Thenthe power is switched on againuntilsetpointiscrossed.
Atthatpoint autotuning is completed, thePIDconstantsarecalculated
andstored inmemoryuntilthe nextautotuningormanual changesare
made.Forbestresultstheautotuningsetpoint should be as close as
possibleto the control setpoint. However,since the temperature will
overshootthe autotuning setpointduringtheautotune by thefullpropor-
tionalband,Systems that cannot tolerate thattemperatureshouldhave
autotuningsetpoint one proportionalbandvaluebelow the control
setpoint.
Settingofthecontrollercanbeenteredfromrunmode,bypressingtwo
buttonstogether,thatwillrequestpassword,function[99],unless
passwordisdisabled,thencontrollerwillgointofunction[70],whichis
thefunctionselect.

AllzonessetforPIDuse the same PID parameters i.e.:- Proportional
band,ResetandRate. These are derived from autotuning or manual
setting.Toachieveclosestcontroltheslowestzoneshouldbe chosen
forthe autotuning.Ifcontrolis notoptimalmanual adjustmentmaybe
advisable.
OnOff
On-offcontrolisavailableforzonesnot set for PID control.All zones
underon-offcontrolare subject to the same hysteresis setting.
Profiling
TheCN616allowstheprocesstobecontrolledunderaprecisetime/
temperatureprofile.
TheProfileofeachzonecanbesetwithin20segments.
Eachsegmentconsistsof 3 parameters
1. Setpointin°Cor°F
2. Slopein°C/min.or°F/min.
3. Timeinhours
Note ! Slopealwaystakesprecedenceoverthetime.Thatmeansthat
ifslopeissetthentimewillbeignored.Toactivatetimeslopemustbe
setto(0).Whenslopeissetto(0)timeisusedtocalculatetheslopefor
ramp.Thiswayfinerslopesettingispossible.
Warning!InSoakapplicationslopemustbesetto(0),otherwisetime
willbeignoredandsoakwillnotoccur.

thefirstdigit (MS) flashing. Set digits with the button.Then
scrollthroughthedisplaywith the button. After scrolling
through4 digits thedisplaywillchangeto slope. Theslopehasonly
3digits,afterscrollingthroughslopemain displaywillshow 4digit
time,and aftertimesetpointagain.Todistinguishbetween setpoint
slopeand time setpoint has4fulldigits,slope has 3digitswith
decimalpoint after second digit,andtimehas4 digits with a
decimalpointaftersecond digit. When all parameters are set save
datawith the
button.Saving data will advance display tothe next segment.

3.1Unpacking
Uponreceiptofshipment,inspectthecontainerandequipmentforany
signsofdamage.Takeparticularnoteofanyevidenceofroughhandling
intransit.Immediatelyreportanydamagetotheshippingagent.
Removethepackinglistandverifythatallequipmenthasbeenreceived.

Selectalocationforthecontrollerthatisfreefromexcessiveshock,
vibration,dirt,moistureandoil.Mountthecontrollerintoa35/8"
(92mm)squarecutout.Thecontrollerasshippedis1/4DIN(92mm
square),soitdoesnothavetoberemovedfromit'shousingtobe
mounted.
Removethetwoscrewsthatsecurethemountingslides.Removethe
slidesandinsertthecaseintothecutoutfromthefrontsideofthepanel.
Reinstallthetwoslidesandtwoscrews.Thelengthoftheslidesmustbe
reducedifthecontrolleristobemountedinanextrathickpanel.

assemblytooperateeitheron120VACor240VAC±10%,50/60Hz
(factorywiredfor120VAC).Itisveryimportantthattheproperline
voltageisconnectedtotheinstrument.If120VACisconnectedtoa
240VACmodel,itwillnotworkproperly.A120VACinstrument
connectedto240VACwilloverheatandburntheinputtransformer.

or 240 VAC. To avoid electric shock or
fatality hazards the power to the controller
lines must be switched off at the main
switch, or circuit breaker before the
controller A/C wiring, including the line
selector jumpers can be handled.

3.6SensorPlacement
Propersensorplacementisessential.Itcaneliminatemanyproblemsin
thetotalsystem.Theprobeshouldbeplacedsothatitcandetectany
temperaturechangewithlittlethermallag.Inaprocessthatrequires
fairlyconstantheatoutput,theprobeshouldbeplacedclosetothe
heater.Inprocesseswheretheheatdemandisvariable,theprobe
shouldbeclosetotheworkarea.Experimentingwithprobelocation
canoftenprovideoptimumresults.Someunitsareshocksensitiveand
requirecareinhandlingandinstallation.Toavoidcurrentfeedbackfrom
zonetozoneandfromzonetoRS-232communications,ungrounded
thermocouplesarerecommended.Thermocouplewiresshouldnotbe
placedinthesameconduitasthepowerlines.

OnpoweruptheCN616controllerwillenter“RUN”Mode.Toenter
setup mode press buttons and together for few seconds

Ifpasswordprotectionisenabledfunction[99]willrequestapassword.
Entryofafourdigitpasswordisrequiredtoenterfunctionselectmode

ModelSetup.WheneverFN[99]appears,infunctionwindow,it
meansthatthesecurityisenabledandpasswordmustbeenteredone
digitatatime.Usingbutton enterthecorrectnumberinthe

6.10 Function [77] Run Autotune
ThePIDcontrolconstantsthatarethesame for all zones programmed
forPIDMode. Autotuning can be done on anyonezoneselected for the
Autotuning. Thesystem parametersaremeasuredduring autotuningby
supplyingfullpoweroutputtothesystem untiltheautotuning setpointis
reached,thentheoutputpowerisswitchedOFFallowinghetempera-
turetoovershootandthendropdown freely back to the autotuning
setpoint.The power is switched ONagain,thetemperaturewill fall
belowthesetpointand rise up to the setpoint. At that point autotuning is
completed,thePID constants are calculated and stored inmemoryuntil
thenextautotuning or manual changes are made. For bestresultsthe
autotuningsetpointshouldbeas close as possible to the control setpoint.
However,sincethetemperaturewill overshoottheautotuningsetpoint
duringthe autotune bythefullproportionalband, Systems thatcannot
toleratethattemperature should have autotuning setpointonepropor-
tionalband value below thecontrolsetpoint.
