Overview

Overview FP Modem-EU Technical Manual
1.1 Advantages of the FP Modem-EU
The FP Modem-EU was mainly designed for data exchange between programmable logic
controllers (PLCs) in an industrial environment via analog telephone network connections.
The following important features distinguish the FP Modem-EU from other standard modems for
personal computers:
•very small size
•operating voltage 24V DC
•attachable to a 35mm DIN rail
•password protection and call back function
•leased line mode (pier-to-pier) with adjustable transmission level
•multidrop-leased line mode according to V.23 at 1200 bps
•DCD output for connection to the digital input of a PLC
•DTMF-send function and DTMF-receive function for simplified telecontrolling
•ASCII fax mode
•CLIP decoder (FP Modem-EU V1.2) (see "Version-Up History" on page 5). Also see
Glossary.

FP Modem-EU Technical Manual 1.2 Important Functions of the FP Modem-EU
1.2 Important Functions of the FP Modem-EU
•Dialing method: pulse and tone dialing (see "Steps for Establishing and Terminating a
Connection" on page 35)
•Transmission standards V.17, V.21, V.22, V.22bis, V.23, V.27ter, V.29, V.32, V.32bis
(see "Communication Methods and Protocols" on page 51)
•Error correction methods: V.42, LAPM, MNP4 (see "Error Correction and Data
Compression" on page 52)
•Data compression methods: MNP5, V.42bis (see "Error Correction and Data
Compression" on page 52)
•RS232C baud rate 600 to 115200 bps, automatic baud rate detection and fixed
communication settings (see "Transmission Modes" on page 48)
•Automatic baud rate detection can be disabled for PLC (tool port) connections with
AT*W (see "Command Tables" on page 68).
•Hayes compatible, extended AT command set (see "Command Tables" on page 68)
•PLC <-> PC communication: You can use the modem for remote programming and
monitoring (dial-up and leased line mode ) with Panasonic PLCs of the FP-Series.
•PLC <-> PLC communication: Communication can also be carried out via COM-Port
with the help of the FPWIN Pro Library "Modem". This library contains a multitude of
function blocks and examples with various purposes.
•The modem is tested according to CTR21 (dialing modem) and CTR15
(leased line mode). CTR21 and CTR15 are identical with TBR21 and TBR15.
See CE mark. The modem can be used in the following countries:
Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland,
Spain, United Kingdom (UK). The modem is not licensed for the US!
•The connection for the framing ground (FG with green cable) has to be
connected! There is no guarantee on defects resulting from non-compliance!
•Furthermore, there is no guarantee on damages resulting from lightning
strikes (also the indirect consequences thereof). Appropriate lightning
protection is recommended.
•An RJ12-RJ12 cable is included in the FP Modem-EU unit package. To
connect to the country-specific telephone jack you have to get a national
adapter. You can purchase a national adapter in one of your local telephone
shops.

FP Modem-EU Technical Manual 1.4 Version-Up History
1.4 Version-Up History
Version 1.21
In April 2005 the FP-Modem-EU Version 1.21 was introduced (see label) with firmware version
1.38 (see ATi3 (see "Command Tables" on page 68)). It includes the following enhancements:
•A new transparent multipoint mode (see "Multipoint Operation" on page 61):
The modem collects all data received via RS232C and sends it after a specified idle time
is exceeded. The idle time can be defined in the new register S95. The multipoint
transparent mode can be selected with the following, new DIP switch settings:
DIP Setting Function
ON DIP
1234
Transparent mode with S95=3 (10ms), RS232C with 19200 8o1
ON DIP
1234
Transparent mode with S95=3 (10ms), RS232C with selectable baud rate
ON DIP
1234
Transparent mode with S95=1...255, baud rate set via terminal
•The FP Modem-EU was produced with lead free (RoHS conformity) technology.
•Minor bug fixes
Version 1.2
In February 2004 the FP-Modem-EU Version 1.2 was introduced (see label) with firmware
version 1.29 (ATi3 (see "Command Tables" on page 68)). It includes the following
enhancements:
•If the PLC/Multipoint mode is selected (DIP2=ON, DIP3=ON) and DIP4=OFF, the baud
rate last used is fixed for multipoint communication. This change was necessary
because the FP-Sigma cannot be set up for 1200 bps.
•If the PLC/Multipoint mode is selected (DIP2=ON, DIP3=ON) and DIP4=ON, a fixed
baud rate of 19200 bps (8 data bits, odd parity, 1 stop bit) is used.
•The reliability of PLC/Multipoint data transmission has been improved:
- Deleting of scrambled characters after the ending CR code
- Default S93 setting increased from 10 to 20, i.e. 200ms delay for start/stop sending
- Additional buffering for immediately sending after receiving
•In dial-up and leased line mode a new default break setting \K6 has been implemented.
This allows 8-bit binary zero data with even parity to be transferred. This RS232C format
is used for IEC60870-5-101communication.
•A CLIP (Calling Line Identification Presentation) decoder is included, which makes it
possible to decode the caller's telephone number. CLIP signaling is done during the first
ring tone on an incoming call. The CLIP function must be activated by the national
5

Overview FP Modem-EU Technical Manual
PSTN provider (for both the sender and the receiver). Most European PSTN providers
offer the CLIP function: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg,
Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey (Finland and Switzerland will soon follow).
The CLIP decoder (see "CLIP Function" on page 46) of the FP-Modem-EU can be
enabled with AT%G1 or AT%G3.

FP Modem-EU Technical Manual 1.5 Compatibility to the FP-Modem 14.4
1.5 Compatibility to the FP-Modem 14.4
We have tried to make the FP modem-EU widely compatible to the previous model, the
FP-Modem 14.4. Nevertheless there is a series of changes, both in design and concerning the
command set.
Some commands were replaced in order to more closely reflect the customary Hayes standard.
This does not have any influence on the operation with the Panasonic controllers and the
associated user and technology libraries.
What has changed? Description and change
Power supply Molex plug instead of the Phoenix clamp -> there is no danger of mixing up
the two anymore. The power supply is now located on the bottom side,
compatible to the FP0.
RS232C port Fully developed 9-pin SUB-D female plug with hardware handshakes
Design
New output DCD output for the PLC (processable via the digital input of the PLC)
ATF7 Identical with ATF6 but not compatible to the 7200 bps of the old modem
ATF9 Identical with ATF6 but not compatible to the 12000 bps of the old modem
Fax Class 1 Does not work and was replaced by class 2.
Password
protection and call
back function
It is compatible to the FP-Modem 14.4 on the caller’s side, but it is not
compatible on the side of the calling partner! The new modem outputs NO
CARRIER (3) before starting the call back. An adjustment to the new version
that makes more sense is necessary at this point. The new modem outputs
"Callback ... press ’A’ to abort" when the call back is started.
AT*P
AT*Pn
The command for entering the password works a little different now: You
can only enter one password and no call back number. This number is
stored in the telephone number register with AT&Z0= . Input: AT*P=xxxxx
instead of AT*Pn:xxxxx
The password is deleted with AT*P= and not with AT*Pn: .

AT#REV? This command for reporting the current version is not supported anymore.
The command is replaced by the ATI3 command now. It has the same
functionality.
