Description
The latest vers on of the SP™ 1 has
the new BWX h gh power Black W dow
woofer ncorporated, as well as a very
n ce look ng cab net des gn. The SP 1X s
a two-way speaker system compr sed of a
15" Black W dow BWX woofer w th a
Kevlar®mpregnated cone, and a 44XT
compress on dr ver loaded onto a CH®7
constant d rect v ty horn.
The SP 1X has a trapezo dal shaped
enclosure, wh ch reduces the bu ld-up of
stand ng waves ns de the enclosure,
wh ch m n m zes m d-bass and m d-range
colorat ons due to the cab net. It s
constructed of 3/4" vo d-free plywood and
s covered w th a durable black carpet.
The enclosure corners are re nforced w th
polymer caps, and a black powder-coated
expanded metal gr lle covers the lower
half of the system to protect the woofer
from external damage. An SA-1 stand
mount adaptor s bu lt- n for ease of
speaker stand use.
The two-way system s compr sed of a
15" Black W dow BWX woofer w th a
Kevlar mpregnated cone, and a water-
res stant treated cone and dust cap for
super or env ronmental stab l ty. Capable
of over 500 W of cont nuous power
handl ng (AES Std 2-1984), the woofer
can handle a lot of sheer power. The h gh
frequenc es are handled by a 44XT 4"
t tan um d aphragm compress on dr ver,
ut l z ng ferroflu d cool ng, coupled to a
CH 7 constant d rect v ty horn. Th s horn
has a smooth, even response w th good
pattern control. The 44XT dr ver features
the Rad al near Planar Phase Correct on
System, under US Patent 6,064,745,
wh ch prov des smoother and extended
h gh frequency response.
Input connect on to the system s
made v a two 1/4" phone jacks n parallel,
and a 4-p n Neutr k®sw tch ng jack s
prov ded for b -amp ng flex b l ty wh le
ma nta n ng super or s gnal ntegr ty. The
nternal pass ve crossover features Sound
Guard 44 tweeter protect on c rcu t, an
advanced topology crossover w th h gh
performance components, to prov de h gh
power handl ng and rel ab l ty. Peavey’s
propr etary h gh-frequency dr ver
protect on c rcu try, Sound Guard, prov des
long and med um-term dr ver overload
protect on when the system s used full-
range, or when t s b -amped, w thout
mpa r ng mus cal trans ents or dynam cs.
The crossover prov des dr ver roll-off and
protect on, as well as dr ver EQ for the
woofer and horn, the sum total s a clean,
clear and smooth response. H gh-qual ty,
rel able crossover components nclude
polypropylene capac tors, and h gh current
nductors. The opt mal ntegrat on of the
crossover w th the selected dr vers results
n a smooth frequency response from
56 Hz to 19 kHz. A crossover EQ sw tch s
prov ded to ta lor the response n the m d-
range, prov d ng a nom nally flat frequency
response pos t on, and an EQ’d pos t on
that pulls the m ds back to help keep
br ght rooms from overload ng, or to help
ach eve a mellower vo c ng for those
appl cat ons that prefer t, such as DJ use.
Desp te ts compact d mens ons for a
15" based enclosure w th a 2" throat
compress on dr ver, th s system can put
out some very ser ous sound levels, and
take 1400 Watts program of clean
ampl f er power, result ng n prec se
coverage w th excellent clar ty and h gh
rel ab l ty.
Frequency Response
Th s measurement s useful n
determ n ng how accurately a g ven un t
reproduces an nput s gnal. The frequency
response of the SP 1X s measured at a
d stance of 1-meter us ng a 1 Watt ( nto
the nom nal mpedance) swept-s ne nput
s gnal. As shown n f gure 1, the selected
dr vers n the SP 1X comb ne to g ve a
smooth frequency response from 56 Hz
to 19 kHz.
Power Handling
There are many d fferent approaches
to power handl ng rat ngs. Peavey rates
th s loudspeaker system’s power handl ng
us ng a full-range form of the AES
Standard 2-1984. Us ng aud o band 20 Hz
