I nform t ion
The 40E100 Series of RO Pressure Vessel Housings re
designed to be used in w ter des lin tion systems t
oper ting pressures of up to 1000 psi. E ch model is v -
il ble in lengths to house from one to seven 40-inch long
elements. Any m ke of 4-inch nomin l di meter spir l-
wound element m y be used. The 40E100 is designed nd
built in ccord nce with the engineering st nd rds of the
Boiler nd Pressure Vessel Code of the Americ n Society
of
Mech nic l Engineers (ASME Code). The vessels utilize
fibergl ss reinforced pl stic shell for superior corrosion
resist nce.
The
inform tion nd guidelines incorpor ted in this
User’s Guide re intended only s supplement to
good industri l pr ctice. Full responsibility for correct
oper tion nd m inten nce of vessel rem ins with the
user.
This guide should be used in conjunction with dr wing
number 518015.
When properly inst lled nd m int ined, 40E100
vessels c n be expected to provide s fe oper tion over
long service life.

Reg rdless of when or by whom your vessel m y h ve
been inst lled, there re few quick checks you
should m ke before use. Check th t e ch vessel is:
Mounted with compli nt m teri l (polyureth ne
s ddle) between the fibergl ss shell nd ny rigid

foreign m tter from both ends of vessels s follows:
1. Remove cont min nts using sm ll wire-brush
or suit ble br sive (such s medium-gr de
ScotchBrite
TM
)
Remove the Ret ining Ring from the
gr oove
1. Lift the t bbed end of the ret ining ring up nd out
of the st inless steel groove in the shell nd then
w y from the he d so th t it rests in the end m rgin
of the vessel. This is best ccomplished by using
CodeLine
®
Remov l Tool, p rt number 50303, which
is v il ble from your supplier. This c n lso be
ccomplished using screwdriver nd p ir of pliers
if the tool is not re dily v il ble.
With the remov l tool the ret ining ring c n be
lifted upw rd by simply rot ting the tool
counterclockwise fter inserting it over the t b on
the ret ining ring (Use the sm ller hole). Hold the
tool fl t g inst the end m rgin nd p r llel to the
vessel bore. It is then possible to pull the end of the
ret ining ring str ight out. The ret ining ring m y
sn p b ck into the groove if this lignment is not
closely dhered to. If the ret ining ring is difficult
to remove, try so king with rele se gent such s

or WD40TM, being c reful to void ny

Cle ning inside the vessel
2. Flush w y loosened deposits with cle n w ter.
Removing the He d
The he d ssembly is shown in figure 1, pg 2.
Remove he d s follows:
Disconnect Perme te Piping
1. Disconnect perme te piping s required t ne rest
convenient joint, being c reful not to pl ce undue
stress on the thre ded connections in the pl stic
perme te port.
Ret ining Ring Remov l Tool
When using screwdriver nd pliers, pry the t bbed
end of the ret ining ring out of the st inless steel
groove with the tip of the screwdriver. Once the end
of the ret ining ring is cle r of the groove, gr b the
t b with the pliers nd pull tow rds the end of the
vessel until the end of the ring is resting in the end
m rgin of the shell.

2. Remove the 4” ret ining ring from the st inless steel
groove in the shell by rot ting your finger behind the
ring s it continues to exit the groove.
2. Remove nd disc rd plug se l, t king c re not

3. Repe t bove procedures for opposite end of the
vessel.
4. As soon s possible fter remov l,
dis ssemble
nd check ll he d components, s described in
Rebuilding the He d nd Refurbishing P rts.

3. Once the ret ining ring h s been removed, ex mine
the re for burrs or dings which could d m ge the
he d or membr ne. If necess ry, use ScotchBrite
TM
or 600 gr de s ndp per to smooth the re .
Removing He d Assembly
1. Gr sp the feed/concentr te port nd pull the nece-
ss ry he d ssembly str ight out. It m y be required
to give sh rp forceful tug or to rock the he d from
side to side in order to move the he d. T ke c re to
void
d m ging the perme te port. It is m de of PVC
or other engineering thermopl stic (occ sion lly
st inless steel or other met l) nd is not designed to
withst nd mistre tment.

Repl cing
Element s
The following procedures re provided for inform tion
only. Elements should be inst lled in ccord nce with
the element m nuf cturer’s recommend tions. Where
conflicts exist, cont ct the element m nuf cturer or
Pent ir W ter for cl rific tion.
To repl ce elements, proceed s follows:

El ements
4. Inst ll d pter if required into one end plug.
At
downstre m end of vessel, orient end plug
ports into desired position nd push plug fully
into vessel. A sh rp, forceful thrust m y be
needed to enter plug se l into the vessel bore.
1. Remove he ds from both ends of the vessels s
described in
Opening the Vessel.
NOTE
Alw ys remove nd inst ll element in
the direction of feed flow. The feed end
(upstre m end) is the end plumbed
most directly to the p ump.
2. Push element(s) out of vessel from the upstre m
end.
3. For multi-element vessels, remove the intercon-
nectors nd ret in for reinst ll tion.
Inst ll tion of the End Plug Assembly

Inserting El ements
1. Ensure th t he ds re v il ble in cle n, s-new
condition before proceeding. (If in doubt s to
he d condition see section on inspecting p rts,
p ge 10).
2. Check th t ll required elements re re dy for ssem-
bly, with no dings or other d m ge which could
scr tch the inside of the vessel.
3. Check th t the interior of the vessel is cle n nd free
of burrs, sh rp edges or other d m ge.
Remove ny residu l lubric nt from the vessel bore
nd work fresh, thin film of P rker-Super O-Lube
TM
silicon lubric nt into the le d-in ch mfer nd n re
pproxim tely ½ inch in from the ch mfer
5. C refully insert ret ining ring into its
groove.
This is done by inserting the le d end of the
spir l ret ining ring (end without bent t b) into
the st inless steel ret ining ring groove loc ted
in the shell, nd slowly pushing the rem ining
turns into the shell.

6. Check th t the spir l ret ining ring is fully se ted
in the groove. If it is not, remove nd check for
foreign m teri l th t is c using the spir l ring not
to sit into the groove.
When ll the elements re fully inserted into the
vessel, inst ll the upstre m he d with the d pter
fitted if required, s described in p r gr phs 4
through 6 on p ge 5 & 6.
11.Reconnect piping to vessel s described in Rem king
Pipe Connection to Eng Plug on p ge 10.
Ret ining ring se ted in the grooove
7. Lubric te element se ls sp ringly with the element
mnuf cturers recommended lubric nt or with
glycerine.
12.Pressurize the vessel. Inspect for le ks t connections
to the vessel nd ll round the vessel itself. If ny
le ks occur, rele se pressure from the vessel nd
tighten the fittings s necess ry. Then pressurize
vessel nd check for le ks g in.
8. Insert e ch element with the brine se l (typic lly
U-cup se t) inst lled on the upstre m end with its
lip f cing upstre m.

9. Inst ll the interconnectors between multiple elements
s e ch succeeding element is inst lled.
NOTE
On some systems it m y be e sier to inst ll
the piping connections before the he d
is
inst lled.
If so, ple se proceed with Steps 10 & 11.
10.Push e ch element downstre m into the shell s it is
inst lled until the element is fully eng ged with the
downstre m he d. If the elements re h rd to push,
m ke sure the brine se l is properly inst lled nd you
re pushing from the upstre m end.

2. Cover O-rings with this even l yer of P rker Super

ended by your element supplier.
3. Assemble one Port Se l into the groove in the Se ling
Pl te nd the other into the groove on the sm ll end
of the Perme te Port. Insert Ad pter se l into the

4. Hold Be ring Pl te with the 3 ½” di meter stepped
surf ce f cing tow rds you. From this side, insert the
sm ller m chined end of the st inless steel Feed/
Concentr te Port through the l rger outer hole.
5. Holding the port in pl ce, inst ll the Port Ret iner
set into the groove in the m chined end of the port.
Pull port b ck until ret ining ring set bottoms in
the Be ring Pl te recess.

8. Sn p the Ret ining ring into the groove in the
Perme te Port, up g inst the f ce of the Be ring

9. Ex mine the ssembly to ensure th t the m ting f ces
of the Se ling nd Be ring Pl te re in complete cont ct.
If they re not, dis-s ssemble the he d nd st rt over.
NOTE
The 1/8” blind hole in one surf ce of the
Se ling Pl te must be on the side f cing
w y from the Be ring Pl te.
6. Holding the Be ring Pl te nd Feed/Concentr te
Port firmly together, press the Se ling Pl te on to the
m chined end of the Feed/Concentr te Port so th t
the two p irs of holes line up.
7. Assemble the Perme te Port through the center hole
in the Se ling Pl te, lign the Perme te port pin with
the Se ling Pl te lignment hole nd press fully into
position.
Inst lling the Be ring Pl te nd Se ling Pl te
10. When he d is correctly ssembled, insert the Plug
Se l O-ring into the groove on the outside di meter
of the Se l Pl te.
11. Protect he ds from cont min tion until re dy to
ssemble into the vessel(s).
Refurbishing P rts
Pl stic p rts: ex mine for cr cking, softening or discoloring.
This m y indic te chemic l tt ck of the m teri l. Defective
p rts must be repl ced. Altern te m teri ls m y be required.
Cont ct your supplier or Pent ir W ter for ssist nce
Met l p rts: check for corrosion, scr tches, dents, cr cks or
other d m ge to insert ring nd spir l ret ining ring.

Refurbishing Shell
1. Using fine wire brush, remove ny l rge deposits from
Ret ining Ring groove in the vessel.
2. Using medium or finer gr de of ScotchBriteTM nd mild
so p solution, cle n the inside of the vessel t le st 4
inches in from e ch end.
3. Use cle n w ter to rinse w y ll loosened deposits
nd so p residue.
4. Ex mine inside of the vessel for scr tches, gouges or
other imperfections th t could prevent proper
se ling. If such re s exist nd le ks re observed
when the vessel is pl ced b ck in service, the shell
m y need to be repl ced.
Se ls should be repl ced necess rily, e ch time the
vessels re serviced. Any p rts th t need to be
repl ced re v il ble from your supplier or from
Pent ir W ter.
Refurbishing Other P rt s
1. Remove ny l rge deposits from met l p rts using
wire brush.
2. Scrub the entire surf ce with medium gr de Scotch-
BriteTM until ll cont min nts re removed.
3. Rinse p rts cle n with fresh w ter nd dry.
4. Inspect ll p rts for service bility s specified bove.

2. Scrub the entire surf ce with medium gr de Scotch-
BriteTM until ll cont min nts re removed.
