f Listening Safely
To prot ct your h aring, follow th s guid lin s wh n you us arphon s.
• S t th volum to th low st s tting b for you b gin. Adjust th volum to a comfortabl l v l
whil list ning.
• Do not list n at v ry high volum l v ls. Ext nd d high-volum list ning can l ad to p rman nt
loss of h aring.
• Onc you s t th volum , do not incr as it. Ov r tim , your ars adapt to th volum l v l, so a
volum l v l that do s not caus discomfort might still damag your h aring.
g Traffic Safety
Do not w ar arphon s whil op rating your d t ctor n ar high-traffic ar as. Ev n though som
arphon s ar d sign d to l t you h ar outsid nois wh n list ning at normal volum l v ls, th y
still can pr s nt a traffic hazard.
6 Operation
Your P r l m tal d t ctor distinguish s b tw n f rrous (contain iron) and non-f rrous (do not)
m tals. Wh n th d t ctor s ns s a m tallic obj ct, th m t r r ading chang s, th NON-FERROUS
or FERROUS indicator turns on or off, and th d t ctor sounds on of thr ton s. Th high r th
ton pitch, th strong r th d t ction.
a Preparing the detector
1. S t BATT TEST to OPERATE.
2. Hold th d t ctor in a comfortabl position, th n rotat MODE to th d sir d position. S t it to
VLF to t st batt ry pow r and adjust TUNE and GROUND. (S "Fin -tuning th d t ctor" and
"Adjusting GROUND"). S t it to TR1 to d t ct xtr m diff r nc s in m tals, such as b tw n in
m tals, such as b tw n iron and gold. Th diff r nc b tw n iron and gold shows on th m t r
(iron in th f rrous s ction, gold in th non-f rrous s ction). S t it to TR2 to d t ct fin r
distinctions b tw n m tals, for xampl b tw n aluminium and gold (s "Adjusting
DISCRIMINATION") [N].
Follow th s st ps to s t TUNE [O]:
1. Rotat VOLUME to th 10 o'clock position.
2. S t MODE to VLF.
3. S t DISCRIMINATION, GROUND and SENSITIVITY to th ir midpoint.
4. Hold th s arch coil about 1 foot (30cm) away from th ground and any m tal obj ct. Whil
pr ssing th r d button on th handl , slowly position TUNE until th point r on th vu-m t r
r sts at 0. R l as th r d button.
As you s arch, you can fin -tun th d t ctor using th oth r controls (s "Fin -Tuning th
D t ctor")
Note: Pr ss th r d button on th handl at any tim during op ration to automatically r turn th
point r to 0.
b Indoor testing
To l arn how th d t ctor r acts to diff r nt m tals, you should t st it b for you us it th first
tim . You can t st th d t ctor indoors or outdoors. You n d to fin -tun th d t ctor b for v ry
us (s “Fin -tuning th D t ctor”).
1. R mov any watch s, rings, or oth r m tal j w ll ry you ar w aring and plac th d t ctor on a
wood n or plastic tabl .
2. Adjust th s arch coil's angl so th flat part fac s th c iling [P].
Note: N v r t st th d t ctor on a floor insid a building. Most buildings hav m tal of som kind
in th floor, which might int rf r with th obj cts you ar t sting or mask th signal compl t ly.
3. S t MODE to TR1.
4. Mov a sampl of th mat rial you want th d t ctor to find (such as a gold ring or coin) about 2
inch s (± 5cm) abov th s arch coil.

Notes:
•Th s arch coil will not d t ct without motion. You must mov th obj ct sinc you ar not
sw ping with th d t ctor at this tim .
•If you ar using a coin, th d t ctor d t cts it mor asily if you hold it so a flat sid (not th
dg ) is parall l with th flat sid of th s arch coil.
•If th d t ctor d t cts th mat rial, th NON-FERROUS and FERROUS indicators flash and th
point r mov s to FERROUS or NON-FERROUS whil th d t ctor d t rmin s th typ of m tal it is
d t cting. If it d t cts non-f rrous m tal, it also sounds a ton .
•If th d t ctor do s not d t ct th mat rial, ch ck th batt ry pow r and v rify that th s arch
coil is prop rly conn ct d.
c Outdoor testing and use
1. Find an ar a on th ground outsid wh r th r is no m tal.
2. Plac a sampl of th mat rial you want th d t ctor to find (such as a gold ring or a coin) on th
ground. (If you ar using a valuabl m tal such as gold to t st th d t ctor, mark th ar a wh r
you plac d th it m, to h lp you find it lat r. Do not plac it in tall grass or w ds).
3. S t MODE to TR1.
4. Whil holding th s arch coil l v l and about 1-2 inch s abov th ground, slowly mov th s arch
coil ov r th ar a wh r you plac th sampl , sw ping th s arch coil in a sid -to-sid motion
[Q].
5. Try finding oth r m tal in th ar a.
Wh n you find a m tal it m, wait a f w s conds aft r th ton stops b for continuing, to allow
th d t ctor tim to r s t (or, pr ss th r d button on th handl to r turn th point r to th
c ntr of th vu-m t r.
d Search coil sweeping hints:
•N v r sw p th s arch coil as if it w r a p ndulum. Raising th s arch coil whil sw ping or at
th nd of a sw p caus s fals r adings [R].
•Sw p slowly - hurrying mak s you miss targ ts.
•If th d t ctor d t cts th mat rial, it sounds a ton and th point r mov s to th typ of
mat rial if found. S t MODE to TR2 to d t rmin th quality of th m tal.
•If th d t ctor do s not d t ct th mat rial, mak sur you ar moving th s arch coil corr ctly.
Notes:
• Th d t ctor r sponds with a strong signal wh n it d t cts most valuabl m tal obj cts. If a
signal do s not r p at aft r you sw p th s arch coil ov r th targ t a f w tim s, th targ t is
probably junk m tal.
• Fals signals can b caus d by trashy ground, l ctrical int rf r nc or larg irr gular pi c s of
junk m tal. Fals signals ar usually brok n or non-r p atabl .
e Fine-tuning the detector
Wh n you b com familiar with how your d t ctor works, fin -tun it to mak it mor s l ctiv
in what it finds.
1) Adjusting SENSITIVITY [S]
To adjust th s arch coil's ability to d t ct obj cts at diff r nt d pths in th soil, rotat
SENSITIVITY b tw n MIN and MAX. For maximum d t ction d pth, l av SENSITIVITY s t
as high as possibl . If th d t ctor mak s a "chatt ring" nois , d cr as SENSITIVITY until
th "chatt r" stops.
2) Adjusting GROUND [T]
S tting GROUND tak s a littl tim , but is critical for accurat op ration. GROUND tun s out
fals signals from min ralis d soil.
1. S t MODE to VLF and low r th s arch coil to 1/2 to 2 inch s (1 to 4cm) abov th
ground.
2. If th point r swings to th right, turn GROUND to th l ft. If th point r swings to th l ft,
turn GROUND to th right.
3. Rais th s arch coil about 1 foot (30cm) from th ground and pr ss th r d button on
th handl . Th point r r turns to th c ntr .
4. R p at St ps 1-3 until th point r stays clos to th c ntr ach tim you low r th
s arch coil to th ground.
