Operating Instructions
External Line dial 1.
Incoming Calls can be answered direct by the operator, or any extension may answer by dialing 2 or
20, or 41 only if it is an internal call.
Transfer Calls by pushing the flash button then dialing the extension you want to transfer to.
Redial Last Number by dialing 45. When last number redial is accessed and there is no available
outside line, by dialing 6 you can request the next free outside line and your number will automatically be dialed
for you when the next free outside line becomes available. You can also dial 6 to get an extension to ring back
when it is available if it is busy.
Call Diversion; to divert if you want another extension to ring if you are unable to answer, dial 47
then the extension no. you want to ring (eg; at ext.82, dial 4784 and it will make ext. 84 ring instead of ext 82, to
reset back to original, at ext. 82, dial 4782.)
to divert if you want another extension to ring if your extension is busy, dial 48 then the
extension no. you want to ring (eg; copy above but replace 47 with 48).
to divert if you want another extension to ring instead of your extension dial 49 then the
extension no. you want to ring (eg; copy above but replace 47 with 49).
Call Park/Retrieve; to park, or put on hold, a call, dial 61 or 62 or 63, then to retrieve that call
dial the same number that put that call on hold.
Speed Dial; each extension can store ten 16 digit numbers for speed dialing, numbers are stored by
dialing 9900 to 9909 and can be accessed by dialing 900 to 909. There is also 30 system wide speed dial
numbers available to every extension but can only be programmed from ext.89 by dialing 9920 to 9949 and
accessed from any extension by dialing 920 to 949.

INTERNAL SIGNALLING
DTMF or Decadic
Hookflash: 12O ms to 750 ms break with a further 250 ms make check
period.
Release: Greater than 1 second break.
EXCHANGE LINE CIRCUIT
Line Limits With 50V feed from the exchange at 20mA loop
current the maximum cable resistance is 1500 ohms
when using MK3 trunk boards. On older 4 switch
trunk boards the maximum cable resistance is 1000
ohms.
External Signalling Decadic of DTMF.
Idle Condition: 1. Loop start: 1 kilohm in series with an
effective capacitance of 1.8uF.
2. Earth start: A line connected via 2 kilohms to
-25v and B line 100 kilohms to earth.
Polarity: Polarity reversal of exchange line does not affect
the SBX once a call is established
Exchange Line
Guarding: 1. Lines are allocated on a cyclic basis.
2. Time guard after extension release is set at 1.5
seconds.
NON VOLATILE STORAGE (MK3 Systems only)
To guarantee correct function, power must initially be applied to the SBX system
for: 48 hours.
Minimum memory retention period after initial charge: 30 days.

ACCOMODATION AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL
The SBX is a New Zealand designed system to meet the needs of subscribers who require
up to 12 extensions and 5 exchange lines. The system is wholly installed and
maintained at the subscribers premises by Construction and Maintenance Branch.
The SBX is currently available in three sizes as shown in Table 1 below.

ACCOMMODATION REQUIREMENT
In general the Philips SBX 12E is installed in an office type environment and will
therefore not require the provision of a separate equipment room.
The system is designed for wall mounting.
Location Requirements
A normal office environment, in view of the operator’s position, away from
photocopiers and out of direct sunlight.
Within 2 metres from a switchable (230v 50Hz) 10 amp 3 pin socket.
Power Failure
There is no requirement for stand-by power arrangements unless specifically requested
by the subscriber.

4. The spare mains fuse is located on this board.
5. The 12 way flat ribbon cable connects the display board to the Mother Board.
6. Alphanumeric Display. This 4 digit display allows monitoring of digits as
keys are being stored in the system short cable store. It is also
possible to display a number currently stored in a certain slot. Numbers more
than 4 digits long are displayed in 4 digit groups
Microprocessor Card
1. This board has provision for two Eprom chips to be inserted i.e. One 16k chip
plus one 8K chip, 24k total.
2. This board has a single Nicad battery to back up random access memory (RAM).
This is to maintain customers programmed during mains fail (ie call divert).
3. CPU functions.
(a) The CPU maintains a data set which describes the complete system state.
(b) CPU processing section interprets changes in the extension and exchange
by continuously monitoring the current detectors.
(c) It detects dial pulses or DTMF signals by also monitoring the link and
DTMF card.
(d) It then uses the signaled information to decide what reed relays or other
equipment must be operated to complete the call.
Exchange Line Interface Circuits, ELIC
The ELIC provides:
1. Line Loop circuit.
2. Line current monitoring.
3. Dial tone detection.
4. Ring detection.
5. Dial pulsing for out dialing.

Link Card
One of three cards associated with the 12E.
The link circuit provides the following functions:
1. Powering of an extension.
2. Pick off for extension generated DTMF or loop disconnect signals.
3. Tone injection to extensions.
4. Tone cadencing to extensions.
Dual Tone Multiple Frequency Card
The DTMF is a single card but on it are two DTMF receivers and a transmitter.
The operation of DTMF receiver.
1. Decodes signals from the links.
2. Converts the information and sends the digital information to the CPU.
3. Either free DTMF receiver can be connected to any link in the 12E.
DTMF Transmitter Operation.
1. It generates DTMF signals for sending to an exchange.
2. Provides DTMF tone to trunks on a time multiplex basis, i.e. tone bursts are provided to one
trunk during the interdigit pause on the other. This multiplexing is controlled by the CPU.
SYSTEM BELL
The system bell is powered by the ringing current via relay contacts, so only an A.C. device is to be
used. The feed provides approximately 40mA maximum.
Bell Type:
Sonalert electronic bell S.L. No. K41 with a 2uF capacitor wired in series. The Sonalert bell
requires 10 – 16mA current.
PROTECTION
The system is protected using fusible links and voltage dependant resistors on all extension and
trunk lines.
