1.1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a PicoScope 4225/4425 Automotive PC Oscilloscope. This
guide gives you relevant safety information, explains how to install the software and
shows how to connect the scope. Please keep this guide to hand for easy reference.
1.2 Safety information
To prevent possible electrical shock, re, personal injury, or product damage,
carefully read this safety information before using the product. In addition, follow
all generally accepted safety practices and procedures for working with and near
electricity.
The product has been designed and tested in accordance with the European standard
publication EN 61010-1:2010, and left the factory in a safe condition. The following
safety descriptions are found throughout this guide:
A WARNING identies conditions or practices that could result in injury or death.
A CAUTION identies conditions or practices that could result in damage to the
product or equipment to which it is connected.

Maximum input ranges
Observe all terminal ratings and warnings marked on the product.
The table below indicates the full scale measurement range and overvoltage
protection range for each oscilloscope model. The full scale measurement ranges
are the maximum voltages that can be accurately measured by each instrument.
The overvoltage protection ranges are the maximum voltages that can be applied
without damaging the oscilloscope.

To prevent electric shock, do not attempt to measure voltages outside the
specied full scale measurement range below:

Care of the oscilloscope
The oscilloscope contains no user-serviceable parts. Repair, servicing and
calibration require specialized test equipment and must only be performed by
Pico Technology or an approved service provider. There may be a charge for these
services unless covered by Pico technology’s two-year warranty.
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, do not use the oscilloscope if it appears to be
damaged in any way, and stop use immediately if you are concerned by
any abnormal operations.
WARNING
To prevent electric shock, do not tamper with or disassemble the
oscilloscope, case parts, connectors or accessories.
WARNING
When cleaning the product, use a soft cloth and a solution of mild soap
or detergent in water. To prevent electric shock, do not allow liquids to
enter the oscilloscope casing, as this will compromise the electronics or
insulation inside.
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, the oscilloscope must not be directly connected
to the mains (line power). To measure mains voltages, use a dierential
isolating probe specically rated for mains use, such as the TA041 listed
on Pico Technology’s website.
CAUTION
Exceeding the overload protection range on any connector can cause
permanent damage to the oscilloscope and other connected equipment.
Grounding
WARNING
The scope’s ground connection through the USB cable is for measurement
purposes only. The oscilloscope does not have a protective safety ground.

For maximum performance the PicoScope 4225 and 4425 automotive oscilloscopes
should be connected to a USB 3.1 port on your PC or laptop. If powering either of
these oscilloscopes from a USB 2.0 port, you may need a TA146 double-headed
USB 2.0 cable, available separately from Pico Technology.

System requirements
To ensure that PicoScope operates correctly, you must have a computer with at least
the minimum system requirements shown in the following table. The performance
of the PicoScope software will improve with a more powerful PC, and will benet
from a multi-core processor.

1.4 Installing the PicoScope software for Windows
1a. (Recommended: install from web) Go to www.picoauto.com, click
Downloads, select the latest PicoScope Automotive software and click the
Download button.
1b. (Alternative: install from CD) Insert the Pico software disk into your CD drive.
Windows 7 will run the disk automatically. Later version of Windows will ask
you what to do with the CD: select “Run Pico.exe”.
2. In the PicoScope installer, select the language that you wish to use.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PicoScope software.
4. Connect the oscilloscope to your PC using the USB cable supplied.
5. Wait for Windows to install the oscilloscope. While doing so it will display
either a message telling you that a PicoScope oscilloscope is installed or a
“new device” icon will appear in the Windows taskbar.

1.6 Features, connections, and indicators
The PicoScope 4225 and 4425 oscilloscopes contain our latest advances in design.
These advances give the scopes oating inputs, ConnectDetect, and a maximum
input range of ±200 V (reducing the need for attenuators).
Floating inputs
Unlike previous PicoScopes, the inputs on the PicoScope 4225 and 4425 have their
own ground reference separate from USB. Each input is independent (common
mode voltage up to ±30 V), increasing the exibility and allowing you to directly
measure signals such as hybrid vehicle resolver circuits. It is important, however,
that every input has both a signal and a ground connection.
Overvoltage indication
If the BNC shell to chassis voltage exceeds the measurement limit, the Channel LED
will turn solid red, and the yellow warning icon ! will appear in the upper corner
of the PicoScope screen next to the relevant channel’s vertical axis. Parts of the
waveform will also be missing when the measurement limit is exceeded.
Similarly if an overvoltage of the normal measurement range is detected, the red
warning icon !will appear in the upper corner of the PicoScope screen, next to the
relevant channel’s vertical axis.
ConnectDetect®
The ConnectDetect feature indicates whether a channel probe has a good physical
connection to the signal under test or not. With ConnectDetect active and coupling
set to DC, the Channel LED for an enabled channel will either be green to indicate
that the test probe is directly connected to a component, or red to indicate that it
is not. This will also be shown on the PicoScope screen. To enable ConnectDetect,
click the ConnectDetect button in the software.

Front panel indicators
The sampling LED will be red when scope is connected but not operating. It will
ash green when the scope is sampling data.
When in normal operating mode the channel LEDs on the front panel of the scope
are o.
Ground terminal
It may be on occasion that a computer power supply interferes with the oscilloscope,
causing noise on the trace or a BNC shell voltage overrange indication. Connection
of the rear panel ground terminal to earth or the chassis ground of the vehicle
under test will resolve this problem.
SuperSpeed USB
The SuperSpeed USB 3.1 port allows fast data transfer and is compatible with USB
2.0.
1.7 Using PicoScope 6 Automotive for the first time
1. Run PicoScope 6 Automotive from the Windows Start menu or Windows
desktop.
2. To test your oscilloscope, connect a probe or test lead to channel A.
Touching the tip of the probe should result in a small 50 Hz or 60 Hz signal
showing in the PicoScope window.
3. Choose your test from the Automotive menu. All the instructions you need
will be displayed in a help page.
