1 DESCRIPTION
The modulesdescribed inthismanualformpart ofthe Vistek1600 range ofinterfaceproducts. Although
theyprocess High Definition (HD)video signals, theyarefullycompatiblewithall otherproductsinthe
range intermsoftheirformfactor, powersupplyrequirementsand controlinterface. Eachisa3U high
cardthat can be fitted intoaV1606 rack oraV6011 '1-Box', fromwhichit obtainsitspowerand control. A
passiverearmoduleisrequired forall signalinterconnections.
Thismanualcoversthe following modules:
V6402 HD Frame Synchroniser
V6404 HD Down Converter
V6406 HD Up Converter
V6408 HD Cross Converter
V6418 HD Converter
Thesemodulesarebased on acommon platform, withavarietyofAdd-Onsavailable:
VP: Video ProcAmp
SY: Frame Synchroniser(inherent forV6402)
FD: Field/Frame Delay(requiresthe SY option tobe enabled)
CP: Closed Captioning
AH: Audio Handling
1.1 General
The V6402 HD Frame Synchroniser re-timesan HD orSDSDI signaltoan externalreferencesignaland
allowsthe operatortooffset the output fromthe referencebyaset amount bothhorizontallyand vertically.
The horizontaladjustment isinsingleclock stepsoverawholeline and the verticaladjustment isinlines
witharange of ±255 lines. The FrameSynchroniserwill occasionallyrepeat aframeordrop aframein
ordertokeep pacewiththe externalreferenceapplied. Ancillary datainthe horizontaland vertical
blanking intervals-suchasembedded Audio-remainunaltered, but can be alsoforced tobe blanked. A
built-inTest PatternGenerator(TPG)offersachoiceofcommonlyused test patternsforsystemintegrity
tests. Without an externalreference, the unit can operateasan adjustabledelaymodule, allowing the
operatortoset the input tooutput delaypixelaccuratefromaminimumdelayofroughlyone video line up
toan arbitrary numberoffields/frames, provided that the Field/FrameDelayoption isenabled. The unit
automaticallydetectsthe input signalstandardand operatesaccordingly. Availableoptionsforthe V6402
are: VP and FD.
The V6404 HD Down Converter takesan HD input signaland convertsit toaStandardDefinition (SD)
output at the sameframerateasthe input. Whilethe unit handlesall the interlacing, filtering and scaling
required, it doesnot change the framerate. Therefore, boththe input and output standardsmust havethe
sameframerate. The unit automaticallydetectsthe input signalstandardand setsthe output standard,
i.e. 525 lines@ 59.94Hzor625 lines@ 50Hz, accordingly. The operatorcan select between different
aspect ratios(e.g. anamorphic, letterbox, centre-cutout). Ifthe detected input standardisSD, the unit
switchesautomaticallyintoabypass mode whereit maintainsthe sameprocessing delaythat isnormally
introduced bythe down-conversion process. Ifthe modulecomeswiththe AudioHandling (AH)option
fitted, embedded Audioinformation will be retained byde-embedding it inthe HD domainand re-
embedding it inthe SDdomain. Availableoptionsforthe V6404 are: VP, SY, FD, CPand AH.

6 Issue 6
The V6406 HD Up Converter takesan SDinput signaland convertsit toaHigh Definition (HD)output at
the sameframerateasthe input. The V6406’s3dimensional, motion adaptivefiltering offersfarsuperior
conversion compared withthe V6408’s2dimensionalalgorithm. Whilethe unit handlesall the interlacing,
filtering and scaling required, it doesnot change the framerate. Therefore, boththe input and output
standardsmust havethe sameframerate. The operatorcan select between different aspect ratios(e.g.
anamorphic, pillarbox, centre-cutout). Ifthe modulecomeswiththe AudioHandling (AH)option fitted,
embedded Audioinformation will be retained byde-embedding it inthe SDdomain, and re-embedding it in
the HD domain. Availableoptionsforthe V6406 are: VP, SY, FD, CPand AH.
The V6408 HD Cross Converter operateswithinthe High Definition domainand ingeneralconverts
between the interlaced and progressivelyscanned formats(720p 1080i). The unit automaticallydetects
the input signalstandard, but the operatormust select the output standardfromalist ofsupported
standards. Furthermore, the V6408 can performgood qualityup-conversionsfromSDtoHD, witha
choiceofaspect ratios(e.g. anamorphic, pillarbox, centre-cutout). Forsuperiorperformance, broadcast
qualityup-conversions, pleaseconsiderusing Vistek'sV6406 HD Up Converter. Forall up-and cross-
conversions, embedded Audioinformation will be retained ifthe modulecomeswiththe AudioHandling
(AH)option fitted. Availableoptionsforthe V6408 are: VP, SY, FD, CPand AH.
The V6418 HD Converter integratesthe functionalityofthe V6404 DownConverterand the V6408
Cross/Up Convertermodules, withan additionalShort Delay(<1ms)DownConversion mode for
monitoring purposes. The unit automaticallydetectsthe input signalstandard, but the operatormust select
the output standardfromalist ofsupported standards, orselect the up/downoperation mode. The V6418
performsthe required up-, down-orcross-conversion according tothe input/output standardscombination.
Ifthe modulecomeswiththe AudioHandling (AH)option fitted, embedded Audioinformation will be
retained byde-embedding it inthe input domain, and re-embedding it inthe output domain. Available
optionsforthe V6418 are: VP, SY, FD, CPand AH. When using Short DelayDownConversion mode, only
the VP, CPand AHoptionsareavailable. Alsothe V6302/AP Advanced AudioProcessorcan not be
utilised inShort DelayDownConversion mode.
All unitshavetwoindependent inputs, whichcan be selected eitheron the front panelorremotelyvia
Vistek'scontrolinterface'DART'. Theyalsohaveafullyre-clocked and buffered output, whichisafterthe
input signalselection. Generallyit isrecommended toterminateunused input BNCsinordertoimprove
the unit’snoisesusceptibility.
The referenceinput hastwoBNCs, soapassiveloop-through isavailable. The referencecan be eithera
conventionalBlack &Burst signal(sometimesknownasbi-levelsync) oratri-levelsync, whichisanewer
signalspecificallyforsynchronising HD signals. The FrameSynchroniser(oranyothermodulewiththe
'SY' option enabled)will automaticallydetect whichtype isbeing used and adapt accordingly. A75Ω
referencetermination can be selected using aswitchon the I/O DaughterBoard.
ModuleswithaFrameSynchroniser, i.e. the V6402 orV6404/06/08/18 withthe SY option fitted, comewith
atracking delayoutput on aBNC whichcan be used inconnection witha3rd partyAudioProcessor. Ifa
V64xx isused incombination withVistek'sV6302 Advanced AudioProcessorand adedicated double-
widthrearpanel, the tracking delayinformation will be passed internallyfromthe FrameSynchroniserto
the AudioProcessor.
Common forall modulesaretwo(identical)Output BNCs, capableofdriving eitherSDorHD SDI.
Thereisaversatilefront panelwithan alphanumericdisplay, whichletsthe operatorset up alarge
numberofparametersand read the internalstatusofthe unit. The front paneloperatesinthe sameway
asmanyofthe morecomplexunitsinthe range.
