This document is part of the ASPO Service & Repair set and describes the procedure how to
isolate defects, disassemble the instruments, exchange parts, assemble and calibrate the
Hygropin and probes.

Check Serial Number
Procedure :
Make sure you identify the serial number of the instrument before you start disassembling. You
may need this information later. The serial number can be found on :
back of the instrument

Removing the PCB from the housing cover
Attention :
Before handling the electronic components of the
Hygropin be sure to wear the ESD wrist strap.
Tool :

Screw Driver Crosshead Small
Procedure :
Unscrew the screw that holds the PCB in place.
Unplug the 2 connectors before removing the PCB
from the housing cover.

5. Assembling
5.1 Housing cover and PCB

Attention :
Before handling the electronic components of the
Profoscope be sure to wear the ESD wrist strap.

Procedure :
Before you start with assembling make sure the
keypad is in the housing cover.

Place PCB into housing cover
Procedure :
Remove the protective foil from the display.
Place the PCB in the cover by sliding the plastic
anchors of the housing into the opening in the PCB.

Connect probe interfaces with PCB
Procedure :
Connect the probe interface connectors carefully to
the according counterpart on the PCB. Make sure
the inputs for probe1 and probe2 are in the right
order.
4
Fix PCB with screw
Tool :

Fix the PCB in place using the screw.

Place the sealing strips on both sides of the hous-
ing cover.
Make sure the battery drawer is positioned similar
as on the picture.

Close housing
Tool :

Close housing carefully –beginning on top.
Screw on base cover using the 2 crosshead
screws.

6. Calibration
1
General Instructions
Information:
The Hygropin probes have an imprinted characteristic.
The following procedure explains a 3-point calibration to re-adjust the in-situ and ambient probe.
The 3-point calibration is conducted with 3 different humidity standards which are traceable to na-
tional standards: 10%RH, 35%RH and 80%RH.
The temperature sensor must not be calibrated. Reason: unnecessary due minimal drift, source of
errors and required equipment goes beyond the scope of ASPO.
Please consider following in general:
- Room temperature: 23°C ±2K
- No drafts in the calibration room.
- No direct sunshine.
- The values of the humidity standards apply at 23°C.
- If the temperature is different from the standard temperature of 23°C, the corresponding value of
the humidity standard has to be taken into account.
Attention :
Probe, calibrating device and the humidity standard must be at the same temperature.
1K temperature difference between the humidity standard and probe can result in up
6%RH humidity error.

Preparation of Calibration Device
Procedure :
Remove the knurled lid of the calibration device.
Insert the probe carefully into the calibration cham-
ber and seal it by screwing the holder.
Place a textile pad in the lid of the calibration
device.

Preparation of Humidity Standard
Procedure :
Hold the ampoule of the selected humidity standard
at the neck and bring the entire contents into the
further, lower part of the ampoule by swinging or
lightly tapping against the glass.

Apply Humidity Standard
Procedure :
Break the ampoule at the marked area and empty it
completely on the center of the textile pad while
tapping it lightly.

Close calibration device
Procedure:
Align the calibration chamber with the probe so that
the opening for the lid points downwards. Screw on
the lid with calibration solution carefully. The probe
or screw-in thread may not come into contact with
the moisten textile pad.

Equilibrium time
Procedure:
Place the probe together with the calibration device
on the cover of the humidity standard box applied.
Switch on the Hygropin and wait.
The waiting time to reach the humidity equilibrium
depends on the humidity standard:
10%RH 45min
35%RH 45min
80%RH 60min

Humidity Calibration with Hygropin
Procedure :
Press and select the probe to calibrate.
Press to activate the Probe 1 or Probe 2
menu item.
Use to select “Humi Adjust”
Press to confirm and open the sub-menu.
Use to select the “Acquire (Enter Ref)” menu
item and press to confirm.

The Hygropin displays both, the current humidity
read by the probe to be calibrated and the refer-
ence humidity.
Press to activate the reference value item.
Depending on the humidity standard applied and
the temperature measured enter the correct value.
Use or to change each digit.
Press to move the cursor to the right.
When done, press to save the value.
Select <Acquire> and press .
Press again to confirm and save the calibra-
tion point to the display unit.

Cleaning calibration device
Attention :
After every calibration the textile pad must be re-
newed. Wash out the lid with water and make sure
the calibration chamber is dry and clean before re-
using it again.

Repeat for every reference value
Procedure:
Repeat the procedure (Step1-9) for each of the 3 humidity standards: 10%RH 35%RH 80%RH
Start with the lowest humidity standard (10%RH).

Calculate characteristic curve and save it to probe
Procedure :
Use to select “Adjust”
Press to activate the Adjust function.
Press again to confirm.
The characteristic curve calculated out of the cali-
bration points is now transferred from the display
unit to the probe attached.
In case of problems:
The “Reset to Factory” function deletes all user cal-
ibration data points and restores the factory calibra-
tion data of the probe.

6.1 HW4 Service tool
As an alternative to the probe calibration with the Hygropin display unit the HW4 service soft-
ware can be used. The software offers a wide range of functions –this chapter is focusing on
the probe calibration.
Follow the instruction (Step 1-6) as explained in chapter 6. The procedure how to handle the
calibration unit is similar and applies also when working with the software tool.
After installation execute the HW4 program
Connect the Hygropin with the cable included to the USB port.

Establish connection by searching a USB Master in the “Devices and Groups” Menu:
Select the probe you want to calibrate by clicking through the device tree on the left side.
Select “Probe Adjustment” to open the sub-menu:

Select “Adjust” in the Humidity section:
1. Enter the reference value according to the humidity standard applied and the temperature
measured.
2. Save the calibration data point and repeat the procedure with different humidity standard.
3. Store all calibration data points to the probe by pressing “Adjust”
4. Check the new characteristic Curve of the probe
