User Instructions

These instructions are designed to reinforce
comprehensive training by a Nu Drive approved
distributor or dealer.
Be careful to read all of the instructions before moving on to the next step.

Do NOT use this product unless you have fully understood the FITTING Instructions
and a responsible person has ticked all the green boxes.

The Nu Drive system has two basic modes of operation
1. Forward drive
2. Neutral
You can switch from one mode to another by moving Levers outwards until they ‘click’.
The Levers will spring back to a mid position for forward drive or neutral.
Take time to understand the different ‘feel’ in either mode.
You should notice that the Levers feel firmer when in drive mode.
You can apply braking by moving Levers progressively inwards.
In either mode it is possible to engage a braking function.

The operation of Nu Drive is very similar to a normal wheelchair.
WARNING! MAKE SURE THAT THE HAND BRAKES ARE OFF BEFORE STARTING.
Forward motion in a straight line
Select drive and push both Levers forward with equal pressure. Return Levers to their start position
and repeat (FIG.1).
Forward Motion and Turning
Select drive, apply left brake to turn left or right brake to turn right and propel forwards with the
opposite lever (FIG. 2).
N.B. Do not push Levers out while driving forwards
Braking to a stop
Apply pressure progressively inwards (FIG. 3).
WARNING! ENSURE THAT NOTHING ON THE WHEELCHAIR IMPAIRS YOUR ABILITY TO APPLY BRAKES.
Reversing
Select neutral and move the Levers forwards. Then, whilst applying both brakes, pull the Levers
backwards, then release the brakes. Move the Levers forward and repeat (FIG. 4). To turn, apply
one brake permanently whilst using the other brake to reverse (FIG. 5).
Precise Manoeuvres
Precise movements should be undertaken in ‘neutral mode’. Control is achieved by a combination
of braking with forward and backward Lever action (FIG. 6).
WARNING! FAMILIARISE YOURSELF FULLY BY PRACTISING IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT. WARNING! AVOID LEVERS HITTING THE GROUND BY FALLING FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS.

If you are assisting the carer
When going forward it is possible to assist by selecting drive and moving Levers forwards and
backwards (FIG. 1).
If the carer is providing all propulsion
Ensure that both Nu Drive Levers are in neutral (FIG. 2).
For extended use, the Levers can be detached whilst leaving the Adapters in place (FIG. 3).
Ensure that Drive Units stored on the wheelchair do not adversely affect the chair balance.
Braking
You can still assist with braking in either of the above scenarios (FIG. 4).
WARNING! WHEN BEING PULLED BACKWARDS IT IS ESSENTIAL TO SELECT NEUTRAL FIRST AS THE LEVERS
WILL MOVE BACKWARDS WITH THE WHEELS.

WARNING!
THE FIT OF THE ADAPTER TO THE WHEEL RIM SHOULD BE CHECKED EVERY TIME THE PRODUCT IS USED.
Removing the Lever Drive Units
The Drive Units can be removed to reduce wheelchair overall width for use in limited spaces.
To remove Drive Units, hold the Lever securely and slide one of the three Drive Unit Release
Latches (FIG.1). The Drive Unit will disconnect if the Lever is gently moved sideways. You need
to be confident of your ability to undertake this procedure and support the weight of the Drive
Unit. Ensure that Drive Units stored on the wheelchair
do not adversely effect the chair balance.
N.B. The Levers should not be used as supports
when transferring to or from the wheelchair.
Re-fitting the Drive Units
Ensure you have selected the correct drive unit for each side of the wheelchair. The main arrows
on the top of the handles need to point forward in the direction of wheelchair travel.
Press the Drive Unit into the centre of the Wheel Adapter until it clicks into place (FIG 2).
Check that the Drive Unit is secure by pressing it into
the Wheel Adapter at three points around its base.
Move the levers around to ensure a secure
attachment as a safety precaution.

WARNING!
USE CAUTION IN THE WET AS BRAKES MAY BECOME LESS EFFECTIVE.
CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN TRAVELLING UP INCLINES AS THE EXTRA POWER FROM THE LEVERS COULD TIP
THE CHAIR BACKWARDS.
BE PARTICULARLY CAREFUL OF YOUR HANDS WHEN PASSING THROUGH DOORWAYS OR SPACES WITH
LIMITED WHEELCHAIR CLEARANCE (FIG. 3).
The Wheel Adapters are intended to remain attached to your wheelchair. However, should you
need to remove them follow these steps:
• Located at the base of each Adapter Arm is a black release pin (FIG. A). Press and slide the
Release Pin to unlock the Adapter Arm.
• Unlock two Adapter Arms only (FIG. B) leaving the remaining arm locked.
• Fold the two arms and pull the Wheel Adapter free of the wheel.

General Use
WARNING!
WHEN REATTACHING ENSURE YOU FOLLOW THE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS THROUGH STEPS 1 TO 8.

•Ensure that Drive Units stored on the wheelchair do not adversely affect the chair balance.
•Environmental storage -20ºC to +60ºC.
•Regular external cleaning should be undertaken with a damp cloth and non-abrasive household
cleaning fluids. Do not fully immerse any parts in water or other liquids.
•Do not use any spray lubricants on either the wheelchair wheel bearings or Nu Drive system as
they may affect the performance of the brakes.
• This product should be serviced by an approved Pure Global distributor or dealer every 12 months.
•If any part of the product appears to be working less well than at point of purchase please
contact your approved distributor or dealer. It is your responsibility to ensure the product is fit for
purpose before using it.
•In the case of any enquiries please refer to the product labelling for the year of manufacture.
•When your Nu Drive system is no longer required or has reached the end of its useful life please
contact your approved distributor or dealer who will arrange for collection and environmentally
friendly recycling.
•All Instruction manuals should be retained and stored carefully for future reference.
Important please read
• The Nu Drive system may not be suitable for all wheelchair users. Authorised Pure Global
distributors and dealers are trained to assess for appropriate use in relation to specific medical
conditions. No one should use the Nu Drive system without proper assessment and training.
•This product should only be used by the purchaser and not re-sold or gifted. It should only be
used by persons who have been properly assessed and trained by an authorised Pure Global
distributor or dealer.
•The Authorised distributor or dealer will demonstrate the fitting of the wheel adapter and drive
unit in the first instance. It is important that the first demonstration is observed carefully and the
full fitting instructions are adhered to subsequently if reattachment is necessary.
• The Nu Drive is restricted to a user weight of 136kg or less.
•The only tools to be used on the Nu Drive system are those provided. The Assembly Tool
and Adapter Tightening Tool should be stored carefully for future use. Use of other tools is
dangerous and will invalidate any warranties. Replacement tools can be purchased from a
Pure Global Authorised distributor or dealer.
•The Nu Drive system increases user power and so should be used in conjunction with anti-tippers.
•Take extra care when using your Nu Drive system in damp or wet conditions as the brakes may
be less efficient. It is important to test the brakes to ensure they operate correctly when required.
