These instructions are designed to reinforce
comprehensive training by a Nu Drive approved
distributor or dealer.
Use these 10 Step easy-to-follow instructions to fit Nu Drive to your wheelchair
Be careful to read all of the instructions and, before moving on to the next step, make
sure you have ticked all the relevant boxes. Tick the Green boxes if the answer is ‘YES’,
or the Red boxes if the answer is ‘NO’.

Do NOT use Nu Drive unless you have checked all of the green boxes.

The Compatibility Gauge should fit snugly around the Wheel Rim with no gaps.
Gather all six Connectors marked with the same number that fits your Wheel Rim.
Three Connectors will be used for the left unit and three will be used for the right.
N.B. Retain all of the unused Connectors as they may be needed if you change your wheel
type in the future.

Connector Type
Check the Wheel Rim type by holding the Compatibility Gauge to the inside of the Wheel as shown
below. Try each of the 3 shapes, type 1, type 2 and type 3, one at a time. The number of the shape
that fits your Wheel Rim (1, 2 or 3) corresponds with the type of Connectors you will need.

Wheel Compatibility
Check the packaging to ensure you have the correct Nu Drive for your wheel size.
WARNING! APPLY WHEELCHAIR HANDBRAKE.
Use the Compatibility Gauge to ensure that the wheel hub is the correct width and height to fit your
Nu Drive. If either dimension does not fit then the wheel is incompatible with the Nu Drive system.
N.B. There is NO minimum width or height for the wheel hub and there may be a gap between
the Hub and the Gauge.

Preparing the wheel
WARNING! MAKE SURE THE ADAPTER ARMS ARE LOCKED.
Hold the Wheel Adapter up to the Hand Rim as shown in (FIG. A).
Is there an equal distance between each Connector?
Rotate the Wheel Adapter until the three Adapter Arms are aligned with areas on the Wheel Rim
that are free from obstructions such as Spokes, Hand Rim fixings and Wheel Valves.
Stick the supplied Markers on the Wheel Rim in line with the Adapter Arms (FIG. B).

Fitting the Connectors
Check your chosen Connectors to make sure they are all marked
with the same number (1, 2 or 3) and double check that they fit
your wheel rim correctly as shown (Fig. A).
Using the Assembly Tool, attach one Connector to the end of each
of the Wheel Adapter Arms with the Bolts provided.
(The Connector will only fit on one way.)
Make sure you have included the Spring Washer as shown (Fig. C).

Unlocking Wheel Adapter Arms
Located at the base of each Adapter Arm is a black Release Pin (FIG. A).
Press and slide the Release Pin which will unlock the Adapter Arm. Unlock two Adapter Arms only
(FIG. B) leaving the remaining Arm locked.

Shortening the Wheel Adapter Arms
Check the Wheel Adapter Arms are in the shortest position.
Using the Adapter Tightening Tool, turn clockwise, the Adapter Arms will slowly extend to their
maximum and then rapidly return to the shortest position.
WARNING! THE ADAPTER TIGHTENING TOOL WILL NOT TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE!

Securing the Adapters
Insert the Adapter Tightening Tool into the Tightening Screw as shown in (FIG. A). Rotate the Tool
clockwise until you feel the Wheel Adapter start to tighten. WARNING! DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.
Hold the wheel steady with one hand. With your other hand check there is no side to side
movement between the Connector and the Wheel Rim (FIG. B). Next, ensure there is no in and
out movement (Fig. C).
When the Adapter is correctly fitted there should be no movement between the Connectors and
the Wheel Rim or the Adapter and the Wheel. Continue to tighten until correctly fitted.
WARNING!
IF THE ADAPTER WILL NOT TIGHTEN, YOUR WHEEL MAYBE TOO BIG – CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER.
THE FIT OF THE ADAPTER SHOULD BE CHECKED EVERY TIME THE Nu Drive SYSTEM IS USED.
Are the Connectors tight against the Wheel Rim?

Fitting the Adapter to the wheel
Position the locked Arm over one of the marked positions on the Wheel Rim (FIG. A).
Guide the remaining two unlocked Arms through the Hand Rim and onto the Wheel Rim, these
should line up with the remaining two marked positions (FIG. B).
The Connectors should fit around the Wheel Rim easily with no excessive force required (FIG. C).
Once the Connectors are correctly positioned, press the Wheel Adapter towards the Wheel at the
base of the three Arms until each Arm locks in place.

The Handle has a lower and upper position. Check which position is most suitable for the user.
When the position is correct, use the Assembly Tool to tighten the Bolt (FIG. 3) ensuring you have
included the Washer.
N.B. Do NOT remove both Handles at the same time.

Adjusting the Handles
When supplied, the Handles will be in their lowest position (FIG. 1).
Using the Assembly Tool, release the Bolts on the inside of each Handle (FIG. 2).
Have you replaced and tightened the Handle bolt and included the spring washer?

The Adapters can be left in place when the Drive Units are removed (see User Instructions).
WARNING! IF YOUR WHEELCHAIR HAS A QUICK RELEASE MECHANISM, MAKE SURE THE LEVERS DO NOT
INTERFERE WITH IT DURING FITTING.
Fitting the Drive Units
WARNING! YOU NEED TO BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR ABILITY TO UNDERTAKE THIS PROCEDURE
WHILST SUPPORTING THE WEIGHT OF A DRIVE UNIT.
Ensure you have selected the correct Drive Unit for each side of the wheelchair – the large arrows
on the top of the Handles need to point in the direction of forward travel (FIG. A).
Press the Drive Unit into the centre of the Wheel Adapter until it clicks into place (FIG. B), checking
that the Drive Unit is secure by pressing it at three points around it’s base. As a safety precaution,
move the Levers around to ensure a secure attachment (FIG. C).

The Wheel Adapters are intended to remain attached to your wheelchair. However, should you
need to remove them follow these steps:
• Located at the base of each Adapter Arm is a black release pin (FIG. A). Press and slide the
Release Pin to unlock the Adapter Arm.
• Unlock two Adapter Arms only (FIG. B) leaving the remaining arm locked.
• Fold the two arms and pull the Wheel Adapter free of the wheel.

WHEN REATTACHING ENSURE YOU FOLLOW THE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS THROUGH STEPS 1 TO 8.
Ready to go!
Removing the Wheel Adapter

When you have fitted both sides and you have
ticked only GREEN boxes, you are ready to go!

•Ensure that Drive Units stored on the wheelchair do not adversely affect the chair balance.
•Environmental storage -20ºC to +60ºC.
•Regular external cleaning should be undertaken with a damp cloth and non-abrasive household
cleaning fluids. Do not fully immerse any parts in water or other liquids.
•Do not use any spray lubricants on either the wheelchair wheel bearings or Nu Drive system as
they may affect the performance of the brakes.
•This product should be serviced by an approved Pure Global distributor or dealer every 12 months.
•If any part of the product appears to be working less well than at point of purchase please
contact your approved distributor or dealer. It is your responsibility to ensure the product is fit for
purpose before using it.
•In the case of any enquiries please refer to the product labelling for the year of manufacture.
•When your Nu Drive system is no longer required or has reached the end of its useful life please
contact your approved distributor or dealer who will arrange for collection and environmentally
friendly recycling.
•All Instruction manuals should be retained and stored carefully for future reference.
Important please read
•The Nu Drive system may not be suitable for all wheelchair users. Authorised Pure Global
distributors and dealers are trained to assess for appropriate use in relation to specific medical
conditions. No one should use the Nu Drive system without proper assessment and training.
•This product should only be used by the purchaser and not re-sold or gifted. It should only be
used by persons who have been properly assessed and trained by an authorised Pure Global
distributor or dealer.
•The Authorised distributor or dealer will demonstrate the fitting of the wheel adapter and drive
unit in the first instance. It is important that the first demonstration is observed carefully and the
full fitting instructions are adhered to subsequently if reattachment is necessary.
•The Nu Drive is restricted to a user weight of 136kg or less.
•The only tools to be used on the Nu Drive system are those provided. The Assembly Tool
and Adapter Tightening Tool should be stored carefully for future use. Use of other tools is
dangerous and will invalidate any warranties. Replacement tools can be purchased from a
Pure Global Authorised distributor or dealer.
•The Nu Drive system increases user power and so should be used in conjunction with anti-tippers.
•Take extra care when using your Nu Drive system in damp or wet conditions as the brakes may
be less efficient. It is important to test the brakes to ensure they operate correctly when required.
