Plug-and-play ma ns water backup
for d rect feed ra nwater harvest ng systems
Ma ns backup un t to ensure d rect feed
ra nwater harvest ng systems have
suff c ent water n t mes of low ra nfall.
To let flush ng, clothes wash ng and any
outdoor use of water can be serv ced by
the submers ble water pump ns de a
tank.
In low ra nfall the suppl ed float sw tch
w ll detect f the system s empty. Th s
s gnals an electr cally act vated soleno d
to open n the control un t, allow ng
ma ns water to flow nto the system.
When the float r ses the soleno d s shut.
Th s means the tank s only part ally f lled- leav ng a bulk
of the storage tank rema ns empty ready to adm t the
water from the next ra n shower.
U.K. Bu ld ng Regulat ons requ re that ra nwater cannot
poss bly flow back nto the ma ns water supply. For th s
reason all ma ns backup dev ces must have an a r gap where the ma ns water flows nto the
ra nwater tank. The s mplest way to do th s s for the ma ns water to flow through open a r nto an
nverted cup-shaped dev ce called a tund sh. The Ra n Backup n a Box (Product ID RWH-BUB01)
features a mult -route ant -splash “tund sh” and overflow ncorporated nto one transparent sect on.
It s housed w th the soleno d n an off-wh te plast c cab net 325 L x 260 H x 95 D m ll metres. The
float sw tch s prov ded w th around 15 metres of cable. Please contact your suppl er f you requ re
longer cable

Installation Instructions
The Rain Backup in a Box
®
s f tted ns de the bu ld ng where the occup ers can, when ra nwater
has run out, hear any ma ns water runn ng from the soleno d valve. Wall mount ng s w th screws
through holes n the back of the cab net.
These nstruct ons assume the separate nstallat on of a ra nwater system n the bu ld ng w th
ra nwater flow ng off the roofs through a f lter nto an underground storage tank and a pump to take
the ra nwater through a separate p pe network for to lets, wash ng mach ne and outdoor use.
1)
Locate the best pos t on for the
Rain Backup in a Box
®
un t.
a. Ins de the bu ld ng where the
occup ers can see and hear t.
b. W th n a metre of a 220v AC
wall socket nto wh ch to
connect the plug.
c. Access ble to a ma ns water
p pe.
d. Above the top of the
underground storage tank so
that the backup ma ns water
flows by grav ty.
2)
Mount the un t securely to the wall and p pe the ma ns water to the nlet at the bottom r ght of
the un t us ng 15mm pushf t or copper p pework.
3)
P pe the outlet of the tund sh us ng 32mm waste p pe from the bottom left of the un t to the
ra nwater storage tank. The first 300mm must be strai ht; any angle close to the un t
r sks the water back ng up and flow ng back out of the tund sh. In most nstallat ons th s outlet
can be channelled to the closest poss ble ra nwater downp pe from the roof. Th s backup water
supply does not have to be p ped separately to the storage tank.
4)
The overflow p pe (m ddle) of the Ra n Backup n a Box should flow to the exter or through a
p pe wh ch offers no constr ct on. It s des gned to avo d flood ng of the house f the p pe from
the tund sh to the underground tank s blocked up, and to prov de a v sual alert to the bu ld ng
occupants. Run the overflow to the exter or of the bu ld ng to d scharge over the ground or
gully or connect to an adjacent ra nwater down p pe.
5)
Channel the float sw tch cable to the underground storage tank. Typ cally th s s through a
serv ce p pe made of 4 nch (110 mm) plast c wh ch also carr es ( ) the ma ns electr c ty supply
to the submerged pump the return p pe carry ng ra nwater from the storage tank back to the
appl ances n the house.

6)
Attach the w re of the float sw tch, at a po nt about 25mm away from the body (plast c
sect on) of the float sw tch, w th a nylon t e wrap to a su table po nt (around 30-50cm) from
the base of the storage tank. The 110mm downp pe from the f lter to the calmed nlet on the
floor of the tank s the best secur ng po nt.
7)
The float switch should be
positioned so that, at its
lowest level, han in
down, the water level is
not below the pump inlet.
So, ensure that the water
level at which the mains
backup cuts in is above
the level from which the
pump draws water; this
then avoids the pump
suckin air and stoppin .
8)
Connect the un t’s 12 volt DC
adapter to a 220V AC ma ns
socket. Power should be
ma nta ned to the un t at all t mes.
9)
The nstallat on s f n shed. Some ma ns water w ll cont nue to flow nto the storage tank unt l
the float sw tch r ses.
10)
Note that the rate of ref ll of the ra nwater tank w th ma ns water by th s product s typ cally
slower than the water flow out of the submers ble pump. If you are water ng the garden and
the ra nwater tank runs low t s poss ble that the pump w ll shut down due to absence of
water, even f the backup ma ns s flow ng.

Wirin of the solenoid: Rain Backup in a Box®
12 volt char er and float switch
In the event any w re has to be detached from the Ra n Backup n a Box, for example when
pull ng the float sw tch w re through a serv ce p pe, we show here the w r ng for the 4 pole
connector str p ns de the box under the coloured
logo.
Notes:
The polar ty of the soleno d (green) and charger (black) connect ons s
not cr t cal. The black from the float sw tch s not used n th s
appl cat on.
The Rain Backup in a Box
®
s rel ant on a constant power supply, as such we recommend at least one WC
