Freewheel Device
When the Rhythm SL is switched off with DRIVE
selected
on both DRIVE / FREEWHEEL Levers
then the Powerchair brakes are automatically
engaged. This is called “Failsafe Braking
”. Also, if
the batteries are fully discharged then the brakes
will still function. However there may be occasions
that there is a need
to move the vehicle without
power.
FREEWHEEL LEVERS ONLY TO BE
ENGAGED TO ‘FREEWHEEL’
BY AN
ATTENDANT OR ASSISTANT.
NEVER SIT ON THE POWERCHAIR IN
FREEWHEEL WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF
AN ATTENDANT.
There are Freewheel Devices fitted on each motor.
The
Freewheel devices allow the vehicle to be
pushed without power. To activate, first locate the
levers on the top and rear of the rear cover (see
Fig.8).
1. Ensure the powerchair is switched-
off at the
Joystick Controller.
2. Rotate both levers through 90 de

both levers being in the DRIVE position
without
the support of an assistant or attendant.
Brakes
There are 2 braking systems. The first works with
the joystick. When the joystick is released the
Powerchair will automatically brake.
When the
Powerchair stops the automatic handbrake will
engage. This will stop the vehicle rolling forward or
backward. When you start the brake will
automatically disengage.
If the battery should go flat the brakes automatically
engage provided DRIVE is se
lected on the
Freewheel levers – see Freewheel Device
section
of this manual.
Note: that if the levers are too stiff to move a small
movement of the Powerchair back or forward will
make it easier to operate the le

Powerchair! Whether
or not this is the first
mobility Powerchair, please read these
guidelines as all Powerchairs differ. Failure to do
this may cause damage to you, a third party or
the Powerchair.
Range. The Powerchair has a limited range.
Always ensure that the planne
d journey does not
exceed the maximum range in the
Technical
Specification
section and that the battery is fully
charged.
Rascal Rhythm SL Powerchair Owner’s Manual & Service Record
Range. Ensure you fully charge the Powerchair and
do not overestimate the range as many factors such
as user weight, weather and terrain can all af
fect
range performance.
Warning!
People or objects should never be
carried on the footplates at any time as could lead
to the Powerchair becoming unstable and a
hazard to others.
Warning! Be aware that when setting off if the
castors are not straight, the initial movement
could be sideways.
Operation (cont.)
6. Check both armrests are down
and at a
comfortable position.
7. Make sure the way ahead is clear.
8.
Switch on the power.
Check the battery level
indicator is in the green
area and fully charged.
9.
Switch off when not in use. To conserve
the
batteries
and prevent the vehicle
accidentally
moving, always turn off the power when the
Powerchair is not in
use.
Front-Wheel Drive. When in Front-Wheel drive
mode the maximum speed is reduced to 3 m.p.h. (5
km/h) as this is for use indoors only.
Raised Seat Lift. When the seat lift is raised, the
maximum speed is reduced to 1.4 m.p.h. (2.2 km/h).

Driving the Powerchair -
Hazards
Warning!
Before driving the Powerchair you
should be aware that, under certain
circumstances it could become unstable and tip
over. The Powerchair has been designed to
operate on hard, even surfaces and should not
be used on very rough or rutted terrain. Do not
exceed the maximum safe slope as specified in
the Technical Specifications section.
Immersion: Never enter large puddles or areas of
water where the depth and/or current is unknown.
Immersion or partial immersion of the Powerchair
may damage it and could leave you stranded.
Getting on and off the Powerchair: When getting
on make sure that the vehicle is on level ground,
and not in freewheel mode. Ensure that the
armrests are secure.
When getting off, park on
level, stable ground, and switch off the Powerchair
before leaving the seat. Make sure you get off the
vehicle in a safe area.
Seat Back Position: Always drive with the seat
back in an upright position.
Kerbs and Obstacles: Always try to avoid kerbs
and obstacles. Never ride up or down kerbs or
obstructions higher than that in the Technical
Specification section. Use ramps wher
ever
possible. Always tackle obstacles head on. Never
drive or turn across a slope.
Hills & Slopes: Going Up Hill. Lean slightly
forward when going up.
Remember that the seat
back should be in the upright position. Make su
re
you have enough speed to climb the slope.
Do not
stop or turn the vehicle around.
If you have to
turn while climbing an incline, keep going until
reaching a level area. If starting on an incline, lean
forward and apply power slowly –
do not start and
st
op. Consider an alternative route if not
comfortable about tackling a gradient.
Note: Always check that the battery level is high;
going uphill takes a lot of energy. If the level drops
too low the vehicle will cut out leaving the user
stranded.
Try to avoid crossing slopes – always try to drive
straight up and down the
slope NEVER BACK
DOWN A SLOPE!
Turning: Always slow down before a turn; turning
at speed can caus
e the Powerchair to topple. Look
in the direction you are travelling –
If there is a blind
corner sound the horn.
Turning Circle: So you can judge the turning
circle, practice manoeuvring the Powerchair. This
is important to avoid tipping off kerbs, and when
going into and out of lifts or entrances.
Bad Weather: If it is snowing or icy stay at home!
Remember that ice, snow and slippery surfaces
such as manhole covers, wet grass and drains
could affect braking and steering. Use caution at all
times.
Shower Rooms or Washing: Never take ther
Powerchair into a shower or steam room, and never
hose it down. Its sensitive electronics could
malfunction if they get wet or damp.
Tyres: Wheels: The Castor and Drive wheels have
solid tyres that will not puncture. Should
they
become damaged they should be replaced by the
dealer. Do not attempt to replace them yourself.
Seat Orientation: Only ever drive with the Seat in
the Front-Wheel Drive or Rear-
Wheel Drive
orientation. Never attempt to drive with the seat in
any other position (see Fig. 12)
Seat Raised: NEVER drive on slopes or go over
obstacles with the seat raised.
Footrest: Always stow the redundant footrest in the
vertical position when not in use. Never stand on
the footrests at any time.

Transporting the
Powerchair
Contact the
dealer for advice on how best to
transport the Powerchair in a
road vehicle. You may
prefer to use ramps rather than lifting the
components with hoist system.
Warning! Dismantling the Powerchair
involves the use of tools, lifting and handling
heavy parts. Weights are given in the Technical
Specification. Contact the dealer for advice on
how best to transport the Powerchair in the
vehicle. Only trained/qualified
persons to
disassemble the Powerchair.
Warning!
Pinching or Crushing. Be careful
to
avoid being pinched or having hands crushed
when lifting or handling parts. Wear gloves
whenever possible. Special attention should be
paid when raising and lowering armrests and
for
transportation in a road vehicle car or similar.

Warning!
When charging batteries
NEVER
smoke or charge batteries in a place where
there are naked flames such as gas-
fired
heaters as, under exceptional circumstances,
batteries may give off gases that could ignite
and explode. Always make sure that the battery
pack is not damaged. Never charge the
Powerchair battery pack outside as the charger
is not designed to get wet. If the charger or
battery pack appears damaged in any way then
do not use and contact the dealer.
Warning!
It is strongly recommended that
the
mains socket used for charging the Powerchair
is protected by a 30 m/A RCD (residual current
device). Many buildings have sockets protected
by a system based RCD. If you are in doubt as
to the level of protection in the charging location
then either p
urchase a plug in RCD or consult a
qualified electrician to verify that the charging
location mains sockets are protected.
Warning! Do not attempt to open the battery
box/enclosures, there are no user serviceable
parts inside. It may be necessary for so
me
carriers such as airlines to physically disconnect
the batteries for transit. If this is the case the
battery pack can simply be removed from the
Powerchair.
Warning!
When charging batteries
NEVER
connect or disconnect the charger from the
Powerchair while it is still connected to the
mains.
-
Remove the charger mains plug from the wall
socket having first switched the mains socket
off if a switch is provided.

not leave the charger plugged in with the power off.
This will gradually discharge the battery.
The batteries are the lifeblood of the Powerchair.
Their characteristic
s can change depending on
charging, temperature, usage and other factors.
Listed below are guidelines to prolong battery life.
The charging socket is located below the front of the
joystick assembly (see Fig.13). With the charger
disconnected from the mains, push the charger plug
into the socket. When the powerchair is charged
always remove the plug.
The battery charger has a multi-coloured
charge status LED lamp. The lamp changes colour
depending on the status of the charger (See
Fig.14).
The LED colours have the following meanings:
• Flashing red: Standby or fault – A fault exists if
the charger is connected to the mains power and
scooter but continues to flash. Standby state exists
if the charger is plugged into the mains but not into
the scooter charge port.
• Solid Red: Charging
• Solid Green: Fully charged
• No Light: Mains power is not connected to the
charger or the charger is faulty.
Tip: Always ensure that the lamp shows green
before switching off and disconnecting the charger
at the mains.
Note: the charger contains a fan and will emit a
slight humming noise when in use.
Warning! Never connect any other accessory
apart from the approved charger into the
charging
(XLR) port/socket on the Powerchair battery
pack (Fig.13).

least once a y
ear, by an approved Electric Mobility
Dealer. If the Powerchair
is used constantly then we
recommend a twice yearly maintenance.
2. Ensure the engineer stamps the Service Log
(see Page 26
) on completion of all servicing. Keep
all receipts for
servicing and repairs with this
handbook. This may add value when selling the
Powerchair.
3. When the Powerchair is due for an annual
service make sure you report any concerns you
have, preferably when you book the service
(See
points to look out for below).
4. On completion of the service, always test the
Powerchair before the engineer
leaves and make
sure you are satisfied with the work carried out.
Points to look out for:
• Are there any strange noises from the wheels or
does the frame creak when going over rough
ground?
• Is the battery charged up correctly – is the “full”
charge green light on after charging?
• Is the steering tight or is it loose when t
urning? Is
there excessive play in the steering?
• Are the brakes effective?
•
Is there any damage to spigots or parts related to
disassembly?
