Introduction
This remote control is already programmed to operate the Internet Receiver and
many RCA, ProScan, and GE TVs, VCRs, DVD players, audio receivers, and satellite
receivers. If you want to use the remote to operate other brands of components,
you will need to program it. See page 4 for more instructions on programming the
remote.
Note: The component buttons on your remote (VCR, TV, AUX and
SAT•CABLE) will work only after you have programmed the remote to work
with the component you want to operate. For more information on these and
other remote control buttons, choose Help from your MSN TV home page.
Before using the remote, you need to install the batteries.
Install the batteries
Follow these steps whenever you need to install or change the batteries in your
Internet Receiver’s remote control.
1. Remove the cover from the battery compartment by
pushing it down and sliding it.
2. Insert batteries in the battery compartment, matching
the + and – end of each battery.
3. Replace the cover.
Note: When replacing old batteries, you may need
to reprogram the remote control to operate other
components. Avoid pressing any of the remote
control buttons while you’re replacing old batteries.
If you press a remote control button while replacing
batteries, you might need to reprogram the remote
control to operate other components.

Programming your remote control
The remote control that came with your Internet Receiver is already programmed
to operate the Internet Receiver and many RCA, ProScan, and GE TVs, VCRs,
DVD players, audio receivers, and satellite receivers. This remote control is
also capable of operating many other brands of remote-controllable electronic
components, but you must program it to do so. The MSNTV and DVD buttons on
the remote cannot be programmed. However, the DVD button will control many
RCA, GE and Proscan DVD players.
Find out if you need to program the remote control
Your remote control is already programmed to operate your Internet Receiver. To
nd out if it needs to be programmed to operate other components, turn on one
of your components, such as a VCR. Point the remote control at that component,
press the component button on the remote (for example, VCR), then press the
ON•OFF button. If the component doesn’t turn off, you need to program your
remote in order to use it to control that component.
How to program the remote control
There are two different ways to program the remote control: automatic code
search and direct entry.
Using automatic code seatch
1. Turn on the component you want to program your remote control to operate
(such as a VCR).
2. Press and hold the component button on your remote control that corresponds
to the component you want the remote to operate. For example, if you’re
programming the remote to operate your VCR, press the VCR button. While
holding down the component button, press and hold the ON•OFF button.
When the light on the remote illuminates, release both buttons.
3. Press the PLAY button until the light on the remote starts ashing.
The remote control is searching through a list of programming codes. If the
component you want to operate doesn’t turn off automatically after 5 seconds,
press PLAY again. The light will ash as the remote searches through another
list of codes.
Continue pressing PLAY until the component turns off.
If the component does not turn off after you’ve pressed PLAY 20 times,
you can’t program your remote control to operate that component. Press
HOME•CLEAR to exit code search.

Repeat this step until the component turns back on.
5. To nish, press and hold the STOP button until the light on the remote control
turns off.
Note: To stop the automatic code search without programming any components,
press and hold HOME•CLEAR until the light on the remote turns off.
Using direct entry
1. Turn on the component you want to program your remote control to operate
(such as a VCR)
2. Look up the brand and code number(s) for the component in the code list
starting on page 8.
3. Press and hold the component button on your remote control that corresponds
to the component you want the remote to operate. For example, if you’re
programming the remote to operate your VCR, press the VCR button.
4. Using the number buttons on your remote control, enter the component code
you looked up on the code list.
5. Release the component button.
6. Point the remote at the component. Press the ON•OFF button to see if the
component turns off. If it doesn’t, try pressing the component button and then
the ON•OFF button again.
7. If the component still doesn’t turn off, repeat these steps with the next code
listed for your brand and component until the component responds to the
remote control.
Note: The remote may not operate all models of all brands.
How to use the remote control once you’ve programmed it
Once you’ve successfully programmed your remote control, you can use it to
operate your other electronic components.
1. Press the button on your remote control that corresponds to the component
you want the remote to operate. For example, if you’re using the remote to
operate your VCR, press the VCR button.
2. Press the ON•OFF button to turn the component on or off.
3. Use the buttons on your remote control that apply to the component you’re
operating. For example, if you’re operating your VCR, you can use buttons
such as PLAY, REVERSE, and FORWARD.
Note: If the component you’re trying to operate doesn’t respond to your remote
control, it may be because the remote is in the wrong mode. Try pressing the
correct component button again to put the remote in the right mode.

Troubleshooting
Most problems you encounter with your remote control can be corrected by
consulting the following troubleshooting list.
Remote control will not turn on or operate the Internet Receiver
• Something might be between the remote and the remote sensor on the
component. Make sure there is a clear path.
• Make sure the batteries in your remote control are inserted correctly. Install
new batteries if necessary. Or, if you have both a remote control and a
keyboard, try turning on the Internet Receiver with one, then the other.
• Point your remote control directly at your Internet Receiver, not at your
television. If your Internet Receiver is not visible from where you want to
operate it, move it to where it is visible and try turning it on again. The
Internet Receiver should be within 10 feet of your remote control, and there
should not be any obstructions between the Internet Receiver and the remote.
If you have glass doors on an entertainment center, try opening the doors so
the remote can communicate with the Internet Receiver.
• You might need to drain the remote’s microprocessor: remove batteries and
press the number 1 button for at least 60 seconds. Release the 1 button,
replace the batteries, and (if necessary) program the remote again.
Buttons don’t work
• Press the MSNTV button rst to make sure the remote is in MSNTV mode.
• If you are trying to operate a device other than the Internet Receiver (that
you have programmed the remote to control) make sure you press the
corresponding device button (DVD, VCR, etc.) rst.
