1Notes regarding the service instructions
The electric wiring of the devices must be completed by a specialist in accordance with all applicable national and local regulations. The
Master/Slave operation must be installed by authorised personnel of Reflex Winkelmann GmbH.
Note!
Thoroughly read these instructions and follow them during installation.
2Models
The Master/Slave operation is a software expansion of these device controllers:
• Control Basic
• Control Touch
These devices can be expanded with Master/Slave operation:
• Variomat
• Variomat Giga
• Reflexomat

3 Make-up system
One unit assumes the function of the master. The other unit becomes the slave. Unit level values are transmitted via the RS-485 signal
line. The master unit controls pressure maintenance in both units.

3.1 Function
In a multiple-unit network, the water levels in the expansion tanks are monitored and maintained. The master controls the pressure in
the slaves. The master transmits via RS-485 signal line its current level value to the slaves. The water level in the slave is regulated if the
difference in water levels between master and slaves exceeds a specific value.
The slave supports the master in maintaining the pressure:
• Increasing water level.
– The slave's compressor or pump is started.
– The optional second compressor or second pump are switched on when the water level does not reach the master level within
the defined time.
– The compressors or pumps are shut down when the water level is the same as in the master.
– The slave is switched to individual mode when the pressure exceeds the maximum pressure.
– The slave is switched to master/slave mode when the pressure drops below the maximum pressure.
• Decreasing water level.
– The overflow valve is opened.
– The optional second overflow valve is opened when the water level does not reach the master device level within the defined
time.
– The overflow valves are closed when the water level is the same as in the master.
– The slave is switched to individual mode when the pressure drops below the minimum pressure.
– The slave is switched to master/slave mode when the pressure drops below the minimum pressure.
Note!
The parameters for the level values in the controller are pre-set at the factory. If necessary, adjust the factory settings to
the system-specific conditions.
– For adjusting factory settings, see chapter 5.2 "Setting the controller parameters" on page 11 .

Connect the RS-485 signal line for master/slave operation on the controllers' circuit boards. Only a specialist (qualified electrician) is
authorised to complete the connection which must be realised in accordance with national and location regulations.
Proceed as follows:
1. Isolate the devices from the power supply.
2. Secure the devices against unintentional reactivation.
3. Verify the de-energised state.
For connecting the RS-485 network, use only the following screened cables:
• Y(ST)Y 2x2x0,6; alternative Y(ST)Y 2x2x0,8.
• Maximum conductor length 1000 metres.
Connect as follows:
• Connect the screened cable at the circuit board plug connection of the operating unit.
• Use the DIP switch to activate the terminal resistance.

4.1 Connecting the RS-485 with the Control Basic controller
Danger – electric shock!
• Risk of serious injury or death due to electric shock. Some parts of the device's circuit board may still carry 230 V
voltage even with the device physically isolated from the power supply.
– Before you remove the covers, completely isolate the device controller from the power supply.
– Verify that the main circuit board is voltage-free.

Proceed as follows:
1. Open the housing cover of the Control Basic controller.
2. Use a screened cable to connect the RS-485 interface to the main circuit board.
• Slot 7, terminals 29, 30, 31.
3. Connect the cable screen at one side.
• At terminal 22.
4. Activate the terminators on the main circuit board.
• Use DIP switch 1.
Note!
Activate the terminator when the device is at the beginning or the end of an RS-485 network.

4.2 Connecting the RS-485 with the Control Touch controller
Danger – electric shock!

Commissioning

6Commissioning
The following prerequisites must be met for commissioning the Master/Slave operation of the system:
1. All parameter settings are completed for all devices.
2. The master is defined.
3. The slaves are defined.
For setting the parameters, see chapter 5.2 "Setting the controller parameters" on page 11 .
After all parameters are set, switch the master and the slaves to Automatic mode:
• "Control Basic" controller:
– Press "Auto" on the controller's operator panel.
• "Control Touch" controller:
– Touch "Auto" on the controller's operator panel.
7Operation
Subsequently to starting the Master/Slave operation of the system, the master sends its current level value to the slaves. The pressure
maintenance of the slaves is assumed by the master.
Note!
Variomats are active in slave function only when pressure maintenance is operating. If a Variomat executes the degassing
task, the slave function is blocked for the duration of the degassing cycle.
