Troubleshooting:
Problem: The unit fails to operate, or operates incorrectly.
Action #1: Turn the unit OFF for 20 seconds to reset the unit. If the
unit still does not work correctly after turning back on, check and
replace the batteries observing proper polarity.
Action #2: If the unit still does not work, make sure there is no dirt or
obstacles between the square plates and the housing of the unit.
Care of Unit:
The Placemat Communicator can be wiped clean with any household
multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant. We recommend Simple Green,
which is a non toxic biodegradable all-purpose cleaner.
Do not submerge the unit, as it will damage the electrical
components.
Do not use abrasive cleaners, as they will scratch the surface of the
unit.
Placemat Communicator - #8101
USER’S GUIDE
Communicate at meal time!
Our new unique communicator is perfect for teaching language skills,
requesting needs and making choices. Great for using at meal time to
make food selections or to comment on the meal. The communicator is
covered in soft clear protective plastic and has room for a plate or
bowl and utensils. Simply raise the plastic and slide your six icons into
the attached icon holders, record your messages and you are ready to
go. Features:
• 288 seconds total recording time
• Records 6 messages per level
• 6 levels
• 6 seconds per message
• Easy single message recording
• On/Off switch
Size: 20"L x 4½"H x 19"W. Requires: 4 AA Batteries. Weight: 4 lbs.
Operation:
1. Carefully turn over unit to reveal battery compartment. Remove
the cover with a small Phillips Head screwdriver. Install four AA
size batteries into the holder observing polarity. Use alkaline
batteries only (e.g. Duracell or Energizer brand). Do not use
rechargeable batteries or any other type of batteries because they
supply lower voltage and the unit will not perform properly. Never
mix old and new batteries together or different brands or types
together.
2. Turn the unit on by rotating the ON/Off/Volume knob clockwise
and adjust to an audible level. Next turn the LEVEL SELECTOR
knob to Level 1. To turn the unit off rotate the VOLUME knob
counterclockwise until you hear an audible “click”.
3. To record, depress and hold the red RECORD button. While still
holding the RECORD button, depress one of the six square
Picture holders on the front of the unit and speak into the
microphone located on the front of the unit just below the speaker.
4. Release both the square and the record button when you are
finished recording. Play back your message by pressing and
releasing the same square used to record. Each of the remaining
squares can be programmed in the same manner.
5. The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the
batteries are removed. Previously stored information will be
erased only when a new recording is performed.
6. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR knob to Level 2 and repeat Step
3. Continue programming additional levels, if needed.
Picture and Icon Placement:
7. The communicator is covered in soft clear protective plastic and
has room for a plate or bowl and utensils. Simply raise the plastic
cover and slide your six pictures or icons into the attached icon
holders. The holders can accommodate pictures up to 3.5" x 3.5" in
size. PLEASE NOTE: The holders are not removable; if you
try to remove the holders you will cause damage to the
communicator.
The Placemat Communicator will automatically go into a standby
mode after playback, to preserve battery life. However, the device still
drains a very small amount current in this "standby" mode. Therefore,
if the unit is not going to be used for a prolonged amount of time
(more than a few days), it is recommended that the unit be turned off,
to extend overall battery life. This can be done by turning the
VOLUME CONTROL knob counterclockwise, until you hear an
audible "click".
