by R lianc El ctric Industrial Company. Th Automax Proc ssor
modul plugs into th backplan of an AutoMax rack and x cut s
application programs which in turn control oth r AutoMax modul s in
th syst m. Th M/N 57C430A and 57C431 Proc ssor modul s ar
bas d on th Motorola 68010 16Ćbit microproc ssor. Th M/N
57C435 Proc ssor modul is bas d on th Motorola 68020 32Ćbit
microproc ssor. All thr Proc ssors ar programm d using thr
highĆl v l application languag s: BASIC, Control Block and Ladd r
Logic.

days. Th onboard batt ry of th M/N 57C435 Proc ssor can
maintain th cont nts of RAM for a minimum of 186 days.

2.0 ME HANI AL/ELE TRI AL
DES RIPTION
Th following is a d scription of th fac plat LEDs, fi ld t rmination
conn ctors, and l ctrical charact ristics of th fi ld conn ctions.
2.1 Mechanical Description
Th Proc ssor modul is a print d circuit board ass mbly that plugs
into th backplan of th DCS 5000/AutoMax rack. It consists of th
print d circuit board, a fac plat , and a prot ctiv nclosur . Th
fac plat contains tabs at th top and bottom to simplify r moving
th modul from th rack. On th back of th modul ar two dg
conn ctors that conn ct to th syst m backplan . Modul
dim nsions ar list d in App ndix A.
Th fac plat of th Proc ssor modul contains two
ind p nd ntlyĆisolat d 25Ćpin D" sh ll conn ctors for RSĆ232C s rial
I/O links. Th upp r port (lab l d PROGRAMMER/PORT B") of th
l ftmost Proc ssor in th rack is r s rv d for conn ction to th
p rsonal comput r only. Th p rsonal comput r can communicat
with all Proc ssors in th rack through this conn ction.
All r maining Proc ssor modul ports (both thos lab l d
PROGRAMMER/PORT B" and PORT A") ar availabl for us by
application tasks running on th r sp ctiv Proc ssors. R f r to

2.2 Electrical Description
Th Proc ssor modul contains a local watchdog tim r which must
b r s t within a sp cifi d int rval or th Proc ssor will shut down
and all I/O modul s will b r s t (initializ d to 0, FALSE, or OFF).
Byt parity is support d for all backplan addr ss and data lin s.
Th sup rĆcapacitor on th Proc ssor modul can b charg d to
mor than 90% of its rat d capacity in approximat ly 15 minut s and
is typically capabl of r taining th cont nts of RAM m mory for
approximat ly 10 hours should th BAT. OK" light go out and pow r
is r mov d from th Proc ssor.
Th Proc ssor s rial ports support full mod m control. RSĆ232C
signals hav 450V isolation to logic common. R f r to figur 2.1 for a

3.0 INSTALLATION

modul and th onĆboard batt ry. M/N 57C430A and M/N 57C431
can b install d in th sam rack.

3.1 Wiring

3.2 Initial Installation

St p 2. If on or both of th RSĆ232C ports on th Proc ssor ar
to b us d by application tasks for s rial communication
with d vic s oth r than th p rsonal comput r, us
shi ld d RSĆ232 cabl s. Cabl conn ctors must b
quipp d with EMI/RFIĆshi ld d cabl clamps attach d to
th cabl shi ld. Th cabl shi ld must b ground d at
on nd. Th cabl l ngth must b in accordanc with th
RSĆ232 sp cification. B sur to lab l th conn ctor so
that it can b asily r conn ct d lat r should it v r n d
to b r mov d. A pin d scription can b found in
App ndix C.

th antiĆstatic bag, b ing car ful not to touch th
conn ctors on th back of th modul .
St p 4. Activat th onĆboard batt ry. Wh n vi wing th Proc ssor
modul from th front, you can acc ss th batt ry through
th op ning in th right wall portion of th Proc ssor's
prot ctiv nclosur . Activat th batt ry by taking it out of
its hold r and r moving th tap that cov rs it. R plac
th batt ry in its hold r. Mak c rtain that th batt ry is
facing in th prop r dir ction, i. ., th nd mark d +" on
th batt ry is facing th nd mark d +" on th batt ry
hold r.
Not that th batt ry will b gin to charg th
sup rĆcapacitor as soon as th batt ry is r plac d in its
hold r. For maximum batt ry lif , you should not r mov

th tap from th batt ry unl ss you int nd to turn pow r
on to th modul imm diat ly.
If you ar in a programming ch ckĆout" mod during
which pow r may b l ft off for xt nd d p riods of tim ,
you may wish to l av th tap on th batt ry and us th
sup rĆcapacitor for backup inst ad. Th sup rĆcapacitor
will typically provid 10 hours of backup. Using th
sup rĆcapacitor for this purpos will xt nd th lif of th
batt ry.
St p 5. Ins rt th modul into th d sir d slot in th rack. In a
singl Proc ssor configuration, you can ins rt th
Proc ssor in any slot 0-4. If th rack will contain multipl
Proc ssors, th y can only b plac d in slots 1-4. In this
configuration, slot 0 is r s rv d for th Common M mory
modul . R f r to figur 3.1.

own cabl , built according to dir ctions in App ndix C), to

Proc ssor. Attach th cabl from st p #2 abov to ports
b ing us d to communicat with oth r d vic s.
St p 7. Turn on pow r to th syst m. Th modul will
automatically x cut its pow rĆup diagnostics. S 3.5.1
for mor information. Wh n diagnostics ar compl t , th
s v nĆs gm nt LEDs on th fac plat of th l ftmost
Proc ssor modul will display LO", r ading top to
bottom. Cod LO" m ans that th op rating syst m
n ds to b load d onto th Proc ssors in th rack. S

LEDs on all oth r Proc ssor modul s in th rack should
b blank. Th gr n OK" light on all Proc ssors should

3.3 Module Replacement
Wh n you r plac th Proc ssor modul in a singl ĆProc ssor rack,
you will n d to r Ćload th op rating syst m and all application
tasks unl ss th n w Proc ssor alr ady has th op rating syst m
load d on it and th cont nts of RAM ar valid. In this cas , you will
n d to load th application tasks only.
In a multipl ĆProc ssor rack, if your r plac m nt Proc ssor do s not
alr ady hav an op rating syst m and valid RAM, you will hav to
r Ćload th op rating syst m and all application tasks to all
Proc ssors in th rack. If th n w Proc ssor has an op rating
syst m, you n d only load th application tasks that you want to run
on that particular Proc ssor.
Us th following proc dur to r plac a Proc ssor modul :
St p 1. Turn off pow r to th syst m. All pow r to th rack, as w ll
as all pow r to th wiring l ading to th modul , should b
off.
St p 2. Us a scr wdriv r to loos n th scr ws holding th
RSĆ232C conn ctors to th Proc ssor. D tach th
conn ctors from th modul .
St p 3. Loos n th scr ws that hold th modul in th rack.
R mov th modul from th slot in th rack.
St p 4. Plac th modul in th antiĆstatic bag it cam in, b ing
car ful not to touch th conn ctors on th back of th
modul . Plac th modul and th antiĆstatic bag in th
cardboard shipping contain r.
St p 5. Tak th n w modul out of th antiĆstatic bag, b ing
car ful not to touch th conn ctors on th back of th
modul .
St p 6. Activat th batt ry by taking it out of its hold r and
r moving th tap that cov rs it. R plac th batt ry in its
hold r. Mak c rtain that th batt ry is facing in th prop r
dir ction, i. ., th nd mark d +" on th batt ry is facing
th nd mark d +" on th batt ry hold r.
St p 7. Ins rt th modul into th corr ct slot in th rack. Us a
scr wdriv r to s cur th modul into th slot.
St p 8. Attach th RSĆ232C cabl conn ctor(s) to th mating half
on th modul . Mak c rtain that th conn ctor is th
prop r on for this modul . Us a scr wdriv r to s cur
th conn ctor to th modul .
St p 9. Turn on pow r to th syst m. Th modul will
automatically x cut its pow rĆup diagnostics. At th
compl tion of its diagnostics, th s v n s gm nt LEDs on
th fac plat should display LO" if this is th only
Proc ssor modul in th rack or th l ftmost Proc ssor in
a multiĆProc ssor configuration and th r is no op rating
syst m on th Proc ssor. Th LEDs on all oth r Proc ssor
modul s should b blank. Th gr n OK" light should b
lit, and th BAT. OK" should b lit if th tap was r mov d
from th batt ry.
St p 10. Load th op rating syst m using th dir ctions in 4.1.

3.4 OnĆBoard Battery Replacement

3.5 Processor Module Diagnostics
This s ction d scrib s th Proc ssor modul pow rĆup and runĆtim
diagnostics.
3.5.1 PowerĆUp Diagnostics
Wh n you first turn on pow r to th Proc ssor modul or cycl
pow r, it will run diagnostics on th Eprom and RAM m mory,
m mory manag m nt unit, watchdog tim r, parity, int rrupts, and
SIO.
If mor than on Proc ssor is locat d in th rack, th l ftmost
Proc ssor will also run diagnostics on th Common M mory modul .
Whil running diagnostics, which tak approximat ly 5-15 s conds,
th Proc ssor modul s in th rack will display th cod dd". Wh n a
modul has compl t d its diagnostics, th LED on th fac plat
lab l d OK" will b turn d on.
Should a malfunction b d t ct d, all Proc ssors in th rack will b
shut down and th status cod indicating which diagnostic fail d will
r main on th LED display of th Proc ssor at fault. S App ndix D
for a list of pow rĆup diagnostic rror cod s.
Aft r diagnostics ar compl t , th Proc ssor b gins p riodically
r s tting its watchdog to indicat that it is functioning corr ctly. In a
multipl Proc ssor configuration, all of th Proc ssors in th rack will
b gin r s tting th syst m watchdog locat d on th Common
M mory modul in addition to r s tting th ir own watchdogs. Th
Proc ssor modul will r s t its own watchdog r gardl ss of wh th r
th op rating syst m is load d or not.
Should any watchdog b allow d to xpir at any tim aft r
pow rĆup diagnostics ar compl t , all Proc ssors in th rack will b
shut down. If application tasks ar curr ntly running in th rack, th y
will b stopp d. Th gr n LED lab l d OK" on th fac plat of th
modul at fault will b turn d off. This Proc ssor will ass rt a signal
on th backplan to r s t (s t 0, FALSE, or OFF) all local and r mot
I/O modul s.
3.5.2 RunĆTime Diagnostics
During runĆtim , i. ., whil x cuting application tasks, th Proc ssor
continuously p rforms r alĆtim ch cking of byt parity on th RAM.
Th m mory manag m nt unit (MMU) ch cks for rrors such as
writing to locations that ar r adĆonly. Should any malfunction b
d t ct d, an rror cod will b display d on th LEDs and th
Proc ssors in th rack will b ith r stopp d or compl t ly shut
down, d p nding upon th s v rity of th rror. S App ndix E for
a list of runĆtim rror cod s.
S rious hardwar malfunctions, how v r, can r sult in application
tasks that ar curr ntly running b ing stopp d, th OK" indicator
b ing turn d off, and th Proc ssor b ing shut down. Onc a
Proc ssor modul has shut down, it will not x cut any instructions
or r spond to commands from th p rsonal comput r until it is r s t
by cycling pow r.
