III. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The following operating instructions are important for the Ricon S2000/5000 Series™ Wheelchair Lift. Please
read this section carefully before operating the lift. Lift operation should never be attempted until the lift user
reads and thoroughly understands the operating instructions.
WARNING
IT IS THE WHEELCHAIR OCCUPANT'S AND/OR ATTENDANT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CAREFULLY FOLLOW
ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN THIS MANUAL (SEE SECTION III.A.) WHEN OPERATING THE LIFT.
A. S2000/5000 FEATURES

B. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following safety precautions must be complied with at all times:
•Vehicle must be safely parked, with engine turned off before using wheelchair
lift.
•Always be certain there are no obstructions in the vehicle (seats, tables,
speakers, etc.) that will prevent the wheelchair occupant from turning the
wheelchair to exit the vehicle with the wheelchair properly facing outward.
•Refer to Figure [23]. When exiting vehicle, alwaysface outward and look to
be certain platform is in asafe floor-level position, and the outer rollstop is in
an up and locked position.
•Unusual noises or movements should be inspected immediately by an
authorized Ricon dealer.
•Inspect the lift prior to each use. Check for loose nuts and bolts. If any
unsafe condition exists,DO NOT use the lift. Return the lift to an authorized
Ricon Dealer for repair.
•Wheelchair brakes are less effective if the wheels or lift platform are wet. Use
extreme care in wet conditions.
•Always lock wheelchair brakes (power chair users should turn off power and
set brake) before platform is put in motion.
•Refer to Figure [24].Never stand in the path of movement of the lift platform.
If the platform unfolds on someone, it can cause an injury.
•The platform rollstop is designed to prevent slow, inadvertent rolling off the
platform. The large rear wheels of a wheelchair can roll over the platform
rollstop, hence we recommend you always face outward. Hitting the platform
rollstop with the small front wheels can tip the wheelchair and injure the
wheelchair occupant. Do not expect the platform rollstop to stop a quick
moving wheelchair as it is not designed for this purpose. Use extreme care,
enter the platform slowly and lock your wheelchair brakes.
•Be certain wheelchair fits safely on platform and does not extend over the
inside or outside edges of the platform, or interfere with the operation of the
rollstop.
•Keep others clear while operating lift.
•The lift is designed for one user at a time. Do not overload lift.
•Never leave platform outside of vehicle. Always return lift to stowed position
after use.
•Do not allow children or others to play with the lift as this may be dangerous.
•Close supervision is necessary if the lift is used by or near children.
•Do not place your arms or legs in or near any folding parts of the lift.
•Do not allow anyone to stand on the platform inboard rollstop. Bending this part can cause dangerous
interference with the platform as it raises or lowers.
•Do not operate lift with a load in excess of 800 pounds (364 Kg).

•Refer to Figures [25] and [26].Avoid operating lift while vehicle is parked on a slope, since the lift
platform will also slope causing an unsafe condition.In both examples,the lift slopes during operation.
It is also unsafe if the road slopes in the opposite direction. If you use the lift in a unlevel, unsafely
parked position, it is at your own risk.
•Always park safely on level area before using the lift.

Besure you have read, and understand each of these safety precautions. Review them periodically, and
ask any attendants, or other wheelchair users operating your lift to read them as well. If you have any

C. DAILY SAFETY CHECK
Inspect the lift each day prior to use. It should be clean, free of debris and well maintained. Check that the
following conditions are met before operating the lift:
•All lift functions are operating properly.
•General appearance and lubrication are proper.
•All fasteners are tight.
D. THE CONTROL PENDANT
Refer to Figure [27].Control for the lift is a hand held, hard-wired remote device called the Control Pendant.
All lift functions (i.e., stow, deploy, up, down) are controlled by this device. The control pendant mounts to
a wall clip inside the vehicle near the door opening.

E. LIFT OPERATION
•Before operating lift, be certain vehicle is safely parked on a level area away from traffic. Allow enough
space for lift operation and passenger boarding.
•Open door(s) completely. Operator must take special care to ensure that the area is clear before
deploying lift. Be certain there are no obstacles beneath the platform.
•If so equipped, be certain that the safety interlock mechanism is properly engaged before attempting to
operate the lift. The lift will not operate until this feature has engaged properly.
CAUTION
ATTENDANT(S) SHOULD ALWAYS REMAIN IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO PASSENGER TO
RENDER IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE IF NECESSARY. KEEP OTHERS CLEAR WHEN
OPERATING LIFT. MAINTAIN PRESSURE ON SWITCH UNTIL FUNCTION IS COMPLETE. BE
CERTAIN WHEELCHAIR FITS PROPERLY ON PLATFORM AND DOES NOT CONTACT
ROLLSTOP AS THE PLATFORM RAISES AND/OR LOWERS.
1. TO ENTER VEHICLE:
DEPLOY PLATFORM - Refer to Figures [27] and [28].Push and hold STOW/DEPLOY switch in the
DEPLOY position until the lift fully deploys and stops automatically at the vehicle floor level.
LOWER PLATFORM - Push andhold UP/DOWNswitch inthe DOWNposition untilthe platformreaches
the ground level completely.
•Unfasten occupant restraint belt, and carefully place wheelchair centrally on platform, facing outward
away from vehicle if possible, and LOCK WHEELCHAIR BRAKES.
•Be certain wheelchair is safely on platform and does not interfere with the platform rollstop.
•STANDEESshould carefullystandin centerofplatform, facingintovehicle,firmlygraspinghandrails.
•Fasten occupant restraint belt.
RAISE PLATFORM - Push and hold UP/DOWN switch in the UP position until the platform raises and
stops automatically at the vehicle floor level. Release wheelchair brakes, carefully board passenger into
vehicle, and secure wheelchair.
2. TO EXIT VEHICLE:
NOTE: The occupant restraint belt must be fastened toenable STOW/DEPLOY and UP/DOWN functions. The
lift will not operate unless this safety mechanism is properly engaged.
DEPLOYPLATFORM - Pushand hold STOW/DEPLOY switch in the DEPLOY position until the lift fully
deploys and stops automatically at the vehicle floor level.
•Be certain platform is safely at vehicle floor level and rollstop is in an up and locked position.
•Always exit vehicle facing outward if possible. Carefully place wheelchair centrally on platform and
LOCK WHEELCHAIR BRAKES.
•STANDEES should carefully stand in center of platform, facing awayfrom vehicle, and firmly grasp
handrails.
•Fasten occupant restraint belt.

3. TO STOW PLATFORM:
NOTE: The occupant restraint belt must be fastened to enable STOW/DEPLOY and UP/DOWNfunctions.
The lift will not operate unless this safety mechanism is properly engaged.
•From ground level push and hold UP/DOWN switch in the UP position until the lift platform
automatically stops at floor level. Continue to push and hold switch in the UP position until the
platform folds completely inside the vehicle.
•Close vehicle doors.
NOTE: Becertain the lift has folded completely before attempting to close doors. Power door operators, on
vehicles so equipped, will not operate until lift has folded completely. To prevent damage to doors,
do not release switch until the lift is completely folded, and the lift pump motor has stopped
automatically.
4. MANUAL OPERATION:
Refer to Figures [29] and [30].In the event the lift becomes inoperable
under its own power, it can be operated manually as follows (an
instruction decal is also located on the pump cover).
•Ensure that the vehicle is on a level area away from any traffic.
Allow enough space for lift operation and passenger boarding. If a
break down situation exists and the vehicle cannot be moved so
that the lift system can be operated safely, the operator must
summon emergency assistance to move the vehicle before
operating the lift.
•Fully open vehicle door(s). Ensure that there are no obstacles in
the path of the lift.
DEPLOYING THE PLATFORM:
•Override the "Sto-Loc" feature by lifting the inboard rollstop.
•If the "Sto-Loc" is engaged and lifting the rollstop is difficult, use
the handle extension and the manual backup pump and, in an
up/down motion, fold the lift tight. This will recharge the hydraulic
system, making it easier to raise the inboard rollstop.
•Insert handle extension into hole marked RELEASE VALVE to
open the manual release valve.
•Refer to Figure [30].Turn handle extension ¼ turn counter-
clockwise and hold valve OPEN to begin deployment of the
platform. Turn the handle clockwise to CLOSE the valve when
platform reaches vehicle floor level.
•Becareful not to lower the platform past the vehicle floor level. The
outer edge of the inboard rollstop must rest squarely on the vehicle
floor.
•The attendant and lift passenger should follow the LIFT
OPERATION instructions to ENTER or EXIT the vehicle.

•Turn handle extension ¼ turn counter-clockwise once again and hold valve OPEN until the platform
reaches the ground level completely. Turn handle clockwise to CLOSE valve.
WARNING
ALWAYS FOLLOW OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS TO ENTER AND/OR EXIT THE VEHICLE
WHEN USING THE MANUAL BACKUP SYSTEM.
STOWING THE PLATFORM:
•From either ground level or vehicle floor level, insert the handle extension into the manual backup
system and, in an up/down pumping motion, raise the platform until the lift is completely folded
inside the vehicle.
•Stow handle extension onto the manual backup system cover.
•Close vehicle doors. Be certain lift has folded completely before attempting to close doors.
