I. S-SERIES TRANSIT USE (ADA) INTRODUCTION
he RICON S-Series Transit Use (ADA) Wheelchair and Standee Lift provides wheelchair
access to transit vehicles. The patented movement provides smooth, safe entry and exit.
The lift easily lifts up to 800 pounds (364 kilograms). It is operated by a trained attendant. The
lift contains a powerful electro-hydraulic pump that includes a built-in manual backup pump. If
the lift loses electrical power, it can still be raised and/or lowered manually.
By using the lift control switches, the lift is unfolded
out from the vehicle (deployed). The user boards
the large non-skid platform and the operator uses the
control switches to gently lower the platform to the
ground. After the user departs, the platform is raised
and folded into the vehicle (stowed).
This manual contains warranty information, safety
precautions, operating instructions, and maintenance
information for the lift. It is important to user safety
that the lift operator be completely familiar with the
Operating Instructions chapter of this manual. Once
the lift is installed, it is very important that the lift be
properly maintained by following the Ricon
recommended maintenance and inspection
instructions provided in Chapter III.

II. S-SERIES TRANSIT USE (ADA) OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
his chapter contains safety precautions, daily safety check instructions, control and indicator
descriptions and operating instructions for the RICON S-Series (ADA) Transit Use Wheelchair
and Standee Lift. This chapter must be thoroughly understood before attempting to use the lift.
A. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following safety precautions must be complied with when operating lift:
§Refer to Figure 2-1. Deploying lift when vehicle is on sloped ground is danger-
ous. Always operate lift with vehicle parked on level ground.
§Vehicle must be safely parked with the emergency
brake ON before using lift.
§Inspect lift prior to each use. DO NOT use if any un-
safe condition exists or unusual noises or movements
are noticed, and contact a Ricon authorized service
technician for repair.
§Read and comply with all warning labels and symbols
affixed to wheelchair lift.
§Refer to Figure 2-2. Wheelchair occupant should
FACE OUTWARD when entering or exiting vehicle.
§Standees should use lift facing the direction of travel;
toward vehicle when entering or away from vehicle
when exiting.
§Do not rely on an audible threshold warning device to
provide assurance that it is safe to exit the vehicle fac-
ing backwards. This device may be inoperative or un-
heard, and you might exit backwards when the plat-
form is on the ground! Exit facing outward, and be
certain the platform is at floor level.
§Do not back onto platform when exiting vehicle. Face
OUTWARD, if possible, and make sure that platform
is at a safe vehicle floor-level position, and outer roll-
stop is up and locked.

FIGURE 2-2: FACE
OUTWARD

32DSSS01.A

§The platform rollstop is designed to prevent slow inadvertent rolling off platform.
The large rear wheels of a wheelchair can roll over platform rollstop, so you
should FACE OUTWARD. Hitting platform rollstop with small front wheels can tip
wheelchair and possible injure wheelchair occupant. Do not expect rollstop to
stop a quick moving wheelchair, as it is not designed for that purpose. Use ex-
treme care, board platform slowly, and then lock wheelchair brakes.
§Be certain wheelchair fits safely on platform and does not extend over edges of
platform or interfere with operation of rollstop.
§Do not operate with a load in excess of 800 lbs. (364 kg).
§Do not place arms, legs, or clothing in or near moving parts.
§The lift is designed for ONE wheelchair and its occupant. Do not overload lift.
§Refer to Figure 2-3. Keep others clear
while operating lift.
§Do not allow an untrained person to oper-
ate.
§Careful supervision is necessary if used by
or near children.
§Do not allow anyone to stand on bridge-
plate. Bending this bridgeplate can cause
dangerous interference with platform as its
raises or lowers.
§Always LOCK WHEELCHAIR BRAKES
(power chair users should turn off power
and set brake) before lift is operated.
§Use extreme care in wet conditions. Wheelchair brakes are less effective if plat-
form or wheelchair wheels are wet.
§Never leave platform outside of vehicle. Always return lift to stowed position after
use.
§Do not place equipment or furniture inside vehicle that prevents you from rotating
your wheelchair to properly and safely exit vehicle facing outward.
§Do not use a wheelchair on this wheelchair lift that is too large for the vehicle.
The wheelchair should be able to rotate freely inside vehicle such that wheelchair
lift instructions for entering and exiting vehicle can be properly followed.
Be sure that these safety precautions have been read and understood. Review them pe-
riodically, and ask any attendants or other operators to read them as well. If there are
any questions, contact Ricon Product Support.
B. DAILY SAFETY CHECK
Inspect the before each use and check that following conditions are met before operat-
ing:
§All functions operate properly. DO NOT use if unusual noises or movements exist,
and contact a Ricon authorized service technician or Ricon Product Support for
repair.
§Vehicle interlock is operating properly.
§No objects that may interfere with operation are present.
§General appearance and lubrication are satisfactory and all fasteners are tight.

switch. Pushing DEPLOY switch un-
folds lift from vehicle and pushing
STOW switch folds platform into vehi-
cle. Pushing DOWN switch lowers lift
towards ground and pushing UP switch
raises lift towards floor. The pendant is
stowed on a wall-clip inside vehicle.
2. ELECTRICAL CONTROLS AND INDICATORS
•Interlock Indicator Light
Refer to Figure 2-6. The purpose of a vehicle interlock system is to prevent
operation of lift if an unsafe condition is present. When vehicle interlock sys-
tems are interfaced with lift circuitry, the interlock indicator shows whether or
not interlock is operating properly. The light is interfaced with electrical system
so that no matter which interlock system/method is used, the light will be ON
when interlock allows electrical power to lift and OFF when interlock has dis-
abled power to lift. When there is no interlock system installed, the light stays
illuminated at all times.
