Capacity Disclaimer
Actual accessible ard drive capacity will indicate up to 10% lower t an stated under different
Operating Systems and formatting.
T e storage volume is measured in total bytes before formatting. References to round
numbers of gigabytes or terabytes are an approximation only. For example, a disk drive labeled
as aving 500GB (gigabytes) as space for approximately 500,000,000,000 bytes before
formatting. After formatting, t e drive capacity is reduced by about 5% to 10% depending on
t e operating system and formatting used.

T is guide is designed to provide step-by-step instructions for installation of Rocsecure Rocsafe MX and as a
reference for its operation and usage.
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE

2. I troductio
2.1. About Rocsafe MX
Congratulations on your purc ase of Rocsecure Rocsafe MX. Rocsafe MX represents t e most advanced secure
Mobile storage solution today, utilizing smart card aut entication tec nology and AES 128/256 bits full disk
encryption. Wit Rocsafe MX Mobile, you can enjoy Mobile storage wit t e speed and convenience of bot USB
2.0 and FireWire 400/800 in a compact form factor, and be assured t at your data is safe from prying eyes.
Rocsafe MX is a secure portable ard drive enclosure consisting of a 2.5” SATA ard drive enclosure and a
ardware-based encryption module t at performs full disk encryption, i.e. it encrypts every byte and every sector
of data t at is written into t e ard drive. T e device is designed to fit standard 2.5” ard drives wit a SATA
interface, and communicates wit t e computer via eit er standard USB 2.0 ports or FireWire 400/800 ports. By
encrypting every single byte and sector, Rocsafe MX is operating system independent and does not require any
software drivers. It also encrypts all temporary files, as well as areas t at would normally be missed and left “in t e
clear” by software encryption products. Encryption and decryption occurs transparently wit out any loss in disk
performance. Users simply use t eir computers as usual wit t e assurance and complete piece of mind t at t eir
data is fully protected in t e unfortunate event t at t eir ard drives are stolen or lost.
Rocsafe MX stores t e ard drive encryption key in smart cards (two are provided per unit). Smart card tec nology
is well understood and represents t e ig est level of security possible for secure data storage. It is vastly more
secure t an ot er solutions t at use ardware tokens, w ere t e encryption key is stored in insecure memory t at
can be easily duplicated. In contrast, smart cards store t e encryption key securely wit in, and can only be
accessed upon presentation of a valid PIN. T e user will need bot t e smart card as well as knowledge of its PIN
to be able to access t e data in t e connected ard drive. By doing so, Rocsafe MX enforces two-factor
aut entication, w ic is a ig er security protection by ensuring t at t e user possesses bot t e p ysical Smart
Card and t e knowledge of its PIN.
T e user is required to aut enticate im or erself eac time Rocsafe MX is plugged into t e computer. After
aut entication, t e drive presents itself to t e operating system and t e user is granted normal drive access.

3. I stallatio
To use Rocsafe MX, simply remove t e bottom cover and install your 2.5” SATA ard drive by connecting it to t e
22pin SATA connector wit in. Detailed step-by-step instructions are provided in t is section.
3.1 I stalli g a hard drive
Rocsafe MX supports standard 2.5” SATA ard drives. To install your 2.5” ard drive, follow t ese t ree easy steps:
1. Tur the Rocsafe MX e closure over a d
carefully remove its bottom cover, by pressi g
the latch that ca be fou d o the sides of the
u it.
2. Co ect the 2.5” SATA hard drive firmly to the
22pi SATA co ector o the tray.
3. Carefully s ap the bottom cover to the top
cover.

Co ecti g Rocsafe MX to a computer
Once your ard drive is installed in Rocsafe MX, you are ready to use it wit your computer. To do so, follow t ese
easy steps:
1. I sert the USB or Firewire 400/800 co ector to
your computer’s correspo di g port.

Notes o usi g USB port:
•Do not attempt to use Rocsafe MX w en connected to a bus-powered USB
ub or USB extension cable.
•Rocsafe MX requires 2 full power USB ports. Connecting to a non-USB
compliant port may cause operation damage or failure.
•To ac ieve USB 2.0 speeds, always connect Rocsafe MX to a USB 2.0 Hi-
Speed port.
Notes o usi g FireWire port:
•If you are using FireWire 400, please ensure t at you ave a 9-to-6 pin
bilingual cable and connect t e 6 pin end to t e computer’s FireWire port.

Usi g the built-i keypad
T e built-in keypad allows you to enter/c ange your PIN (refer to Section 0 on Aut entication and Section 7 on
c anging PIN). It works on t e principle of capacitive sensing to provide a better user experience and can detect
t e presence of a touc on t e button.

•T e keypad works on t e principle of TOUCH and users need NOT exert
force on a button to register a key pressed.
It is recommended to avoid exerting force on t e keypad since doing so over
time will cause t e buttons to lose t eir sensitivity.

Usi g a AC Power Adapter
Rocsafe MX is designed to be powered by t e USB bus. However, due to variances of your PC’s ardware, t e ost
USB power supply may be inadequate at times. In t is case, an extra AC power adapter is needed.
T e specifications of t e power adapter are:
Input: 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz, 0.5A
Output: +5V DC, 2A
DC plug: 1.3mm
Note:
ROCSAFE MX remains in aut enticated mode as long as power
is supplied. Please ensure t at you unplug t e AC power
adapter w en away.

Aut entication
Rocsafe MX requires users to aut enticate t emselves via two-factor aut entication before t ey are granted
access to t e installed drive. In order to do so, users must ave t e included smart card (somet ing you ave) and
its associated PIN (somet ing you know). T e aut entication process involves inserting t e correct smart card into
Rocsafe MX, followed by PIN entry. Upon completion of t ese two steps, t e connected drive will present itself to
t e operating system, and can be used like a normal drive.
4.1 I serti g the smart card
Rocsafe MX is s ipped wit two smart cards. Rocsecure recommends t at you use only one card and keep t e
ot er in a secure place. In t e event t at one card is stolen/lost, you may aut enticate wit t e ot er card.
To begin aut entication, simply insert t e smart card wit t e contacts facing down. You may insert t e card
before or after connecting Rocsafe MX to your computer. Once a valid card is inserted, t e Status LED will blink
once. If an invalid card is inserted, t e Error LED will lig t up.
4.2 E teri g your PIN
Once Rocsafe MX recognizes t at a valid card is inserted, you may proceed to enter your 8-digit PIN. T e default
factory PIN is “12345678”. At t e end of your PIN entry, press t e E ter button.
Note
:
•If an incorrect PIN is entered, t e Error LED will blink continuously. Press t e Esc button to restart
Rocsafe MX. If you ave mistyped your PIN, press t e Esc key at any time to restart t e entire
aut entication process.
You will be LOCKED-OUT of your smart card after 8 i correct PIN attempts. T erefore, after about 5
incorrect attempts, it is advised t at you seek for tec nical assistance as in Section
11.Troubles ooting

5Setti g up the drive
After you ave successfully aut enticated yourself to Rocsafe MX, drive access will be granted. T e connected
drive will t en present itself to t e operating system as a removable drive. Please wait for a few seconds for t is
process to fully complete. T e mounting duration depends on your drive and operating system.
Once t e drive appears in your operating system, you may proceed to use it like a normal ard drive.

5.1 Setti g up a ew drive
To set up a new ard drive, you ave to partition and format it. Follow your operating system’s instructions on ow
to do so, or refer to Section 8.1 Partitioning and formatting your hard drive.
5.2 Setti g up a existi g drive
No additional steps are required to set up a previously formatted ard drive. T e drive will be recognized by t e
operating system and may be accessed as per normal.
Note:
•W en using an existing drive, ensure t at t e drive’s file system is compatible wit your
Operating System.
•Rocsafe MX provides data-at-rest protection. After successful aut entication, data in t e
drive can be access as per normal usage. For maximum security, do not leave Rocsafe MX
connected in aut enticated mode w ile you are away from your computer.
As wit any ot er storage solution, please ensure t at you make regular backups of your data
to protect against possible data loss.

6Disco ecti g ROCSAFE MX
To disconnect Rocsafe MX, follow your operating system’s proper device removal process.
Wi dows XP
1. Double click on t e Safely Remove Hardware Ico in your system
tray.
2. Select USB Mass Storage Device from t e list, and select t e
device you would like to remove.
3. Click Stop.
4. Click OK to confirm drive disconnection.
5. Click Close.
6. Windows will inform you t at it is safe to disconnect t e device.
7. You may now safely disconnect t e USB cable from your
computer.
Mac
1. Locate t e Removable Disk Ico associated wit Rocsafe MX.
2. Drag t e icon to t e Trash icon on your desktop and wait for t e icon
to disappear
3. You may now safely disconnect t e USB cable from your computer.
CAUTION: To prevent data loss, ensure that all
active applications are closed before shutting down

7Smart Card Security Features
You can perform certain smart card related security functions wit Rocsafe MX. T ese functions are only available
before/during aut entication. T e following functions are available.
7.1 PIN Cha ge
You can c ange your smart card PIN wit Rocsafe MX. It is recommended t at you c ange t e default factory PIN
to anot er one t at only you know. Follow t ese steps to c ange your PIN.
1. Insert smart card into Rocsafe MX.
2. Press t e Cha ge Pi button, followed by t e ‘1’ button.
3. Press E ter. T e Status LED will blink t ree times.
4. Enter t e current 8-digit PIN and press E ter. T e Status LED blinks twice to notify t at you may press t e new
PIN.
5. Enter t e new 8-digit PIN and press E ter. T e Status LED blinks twice to notify t at you may press t e
confirmed new PIN.
6. Enter t e new confirmed 8-digit PIN and press E ter.
Upon a successful PIN c ange, Rocsafe MX will proceed to connect t e drive. At t e same time, t e Status LED will
blink t ree times and t ere will be two ‘beep’ sounds upon a successful PIN c ange. If not, t e Error LED will blink
continuously.
CAUTION:
Smart Card security and administrative functions must be performed carefully as t ey
cause c anges in smart cards and associated PINs. Please read t e following instructions carefully and
follow t em w en performing administrative functions.
Note
:
•Rocsafe MX only accepts 8-digit PINs. If a s orter or longer PIN is entered, t e Error LED will blink
continuously. Press t e Esc button to restart t e aut entication process again. You will need to
restart t e entire PIN C ange process from step 2.
•Pressing t e Esc key restarts t e entire aut entication process.
•Smart card PINs are specific to t e p ysical smart card. Please be aware t at you may ave
different PINs for eac of t e two included smart cards.
Again, you will be locked out of your smart card after 8 i correct PIN attempts.
