HARPSICHORD OPERATION
VARIABLE CONTROLS

Changes the over-all volume
of the instrument.
Changes the over-all brightness
of the instrument.

of only the ensemble voices.
The reverb knob changes the amount
of
reverberation and the buttons change the size of the
simulated room.
SELECTING SOUNDS
1. To select avoice for the UPPER MANUAL, press the desired
button in the harpsichord section and/or the ensemble section. One
from each can be selected.
24 To select avoice for the LOWER MANUAL, press the desired
button in the hail)sichord section. The ENSEMBLE voices can
be
added by the use of the ensemble coupler.-
COUPLING ENSEMBLE VOICES TO THE LOWER MANUAL
1. Hold the coupler button and the ensemble, lights will flash, then
press the desired button.
2. The coupler button is then avoice button and can
be toggled on and
off as any other voice.

ENSEMBLE OCTAVE SHIFT
The ensemble voices can be sllifted up an octave. This will change the 8'
voices to 4' voices.
THE
UPPER MANUAL:
1. Hold the TRANSPOSER button and press the OBOE button.
2. To reverse this action, Hold the TRANSPOSER button and again
press the
OBOE button.
THE LOWER MANUAL:
1. Hold the TRANSPOSER button and press the COUPLER button.
2. To reverse this action, Hold the TRANSPOSER button and again
press the COUPLER button.

REPLACING CELESTA, STRING, AND PIANO VOICE WIT"H
ONE OF THE SIXTY ONE RESIDENT VOICES:
There are sixty-one selected voices that can be accessed
from the keyboards. (see voice chart.)
FOR THE UPPER MANUAL:
1. Hold the MIDI button and press one of the three voice buttons that
is to
be replaced, (Celesta, String, or Piano), then any key on the
keyboard that represents the desired voice from the resident voices.
FI of the upper keyboard or the lower keyboard is program #1 of
the voice list and F61 is the last voice on the list.
2.
To return to the voice represented by the button, Hold the MIDI
button and press the changed button. When holding down the MIDI
button, the changed button's light will flash to indicate that abutton
has
been changed.
FOR THE LOWER MANUAL:
Hold the MIDI button and press the
COUPLER (the light will
flash), then press the desired voice from the voices.

or lower keyboards is program #1 of the voice list and F61 is the
last voice

TRANSPOSITION:
1. Press and hold the transposer button (tile lights of tIle marked stops
will flash). Then select the desired step, eitller flat or sharp by tIle
buttons in the marked area.
2. Also, transposition can be accomplislled by selecting the desired
key on either keyboard. Press and hold the transposer button and
then select the desired key on either manual.
3. When the transposer button is pressed and lleld the light will flash
showing the selection.
4. To return to the key
of C, press the transposer button. It will act as
areversible button toggling between tIle transposed key and the
keyofC.
5. Return to the key of Cwhen selecting the transposition by using
the keyboards. This is accomplished by holding the transposer
button and pressing the Ckey on the keyboard. All the lights will
flash in the transposer section indicating that the key
of Cis
selected for both states
of the transposer button.
TEMPERAMENTS:
There are five temperaments: Vallotti, Just, Mean, Werckmeister, and
Kirnberger.
1. To set the temperament, press the temperament button and hold.
The lights will flash in the temperament section. Select the desired
temperament and press the button.
2. Holding the temperament button and pressing the desired key you
wish to play on the keyboard will normalize that temperament t6
that key. This means the harpsichord will correct the tuning
of the
temperament so the tuning is correct for the key for which the music
is written.

SA VING STOP SETUPS:
The harpsichord has astop savillg featllre tllat allows different stop
set-ups to be saved in banks. Tllese stop banks will be emptied when
the unit is turned off. There are four stop storage banks, FI and
F61
on each manual.
1. To save astop setup:
a. Press and hold the transposer button.
b. Press one of the four keys.
2. To return to the key-play mode:
a. Press and hold tIle transposer
butt011.
b. Press the memory-key TWICE. Now the key will be taken
out
of the memory mode.
AUTO TUNING:
The instrument will be in the pitch that is set by the tuning knob when
turned on.
To change the master tuning :
1. Hold the transposer and select the desired tuning by
selecting one
of the five buttons in the IO'Ner manual sectioll.
This will force the master tuning to astandard value.

2. The tuning knob located on the output panel will assume
control
if moved. This will allow the various tunings to be
altered.
REVERB:
The reverb simulates two sizes of rooms: asmall room marked
ROOM and alarge room marked HALL. Selection is made by
selecting the desired reverb button. The amount of reverb is controlled
by the LEVEL knob.

SUSTAIN PEDAL ASSIGNMENT:
The sustain function is enabled for both maIluals when the instrument is
turned on.
FOR THE UPPER
MAJ'.fUAL:
1. Hold the temperament button and press the OBOE button.
Pressing the button will cause
tIle light of the OBOE to flash
if the upper manual is assigned to the sustain pedal.
2. To disable this sustain functioll on the upper manual, Iloidthe
Temperament button and then press the OBOE button.
FOR THE LOWER MANUAL:
1. Hold the temperament button and press tIle COUPLER
button. Pressing the button will cause the light
of the
COUPLER button to flasll
if the lo\ver manual is assigned
to the sustain pedal.
2. To disable this sustain function on the lower manual,
110Id the
Temperament button and press the COUPLER button.
SUSTAIN PEDAL AS ASTOP CHANGE:
The sustain pedal can be used to change between two stop set-ups.
To set the stops:
1. Hold the TRANSPOSER button and press the COUPLER and
OBOE buttons. The lights will stop flashing. This sets thefirst
toggle position.
2. Next, Hold the TRANSPOSER button and press the COUPLER
and OBOE buttons. The lights will stop flashing. This sets the
second toggle position.
3.l:Jow for each press
of the SUSTAIN pedal, you can set the desired
stop setup. Stop changes can be made anytime while in this mode.

ADDING EXTERNAL SOUND MODULES:
The addition of an external MIDI sound generator allows athird layer
of sound to be placed on each manual. Holding tIle MIDI button and
pressing the 8"I button in the upper manual or on the lower manual
stop sections causes the buttons to flash. Pressing a key will cause a
program change to
be sent out 011 a MID Iport; tilis also sends the
keyboard infonnation out. The UPPER tnanual plays on MIDI channel
#2 and the LOWER manual plays on MIDI channel #3. Holding the
MIDI button and pressing the 8'1 button without follo\ving it with a key
press disables the corresponding MIDI output.
ADDING MIDI SEQUENCER INPUT/OUTPUT:
Channels 12 through 16 on the MID Iports can be used to interface to
asequencer.
These channels correspond to tIle four intemallayers,
(UPPER HARPSICHORD, UPPER ENSEMBLE, LOWER
HARPSICHORD, LOWER ENSEMBLE). The output of these
channels
can be switched on and off by holding the MIDI button and
pressing the TRANSPOSER button. While holding the MID Ibutton
the
transposed lamp will flash if the sequencer output is enabled.

(NOTE: THE ENSEMBLE LEVEL CONTROL WILL CONTROL THE LEVEL
OF
AN EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT ONLY ON THE DIVISIONS ASSIGNED
TO THE ENSEMBLE SECTIONS. )

DEMOS:
T1 l1e harpsichord has two songs stored in internal memory. The first is
SINFONIES
De FANFARES by Mouret. The second is HANDEL opus 4
No.6.
1. To start: Press and hold the MIDIbutton, tllen press Room. (song#1)
2. To start: Press and hold the MIDI button, then press Hall. (song#2)
3.
To stop: Repeat the above.
MIDI CHANNELS:
The MIDI port uses the following channels:

These channels are chosen for confonnity witlI other synthesizers. Channels 2
through 5are used for the
extemallayer because they will play on an MT -32
expander module (Channel
#1 will not.) Cllalmel 10 is reserved as a DRUM
input, because that is also done on the MT-32 and other synthesizers. The last
four channels are chosen for the internal voices because the MT-32 does not
respond to them.
Channels 2and 3are used for playing and external sound module, and are
independently switch able by holding MIDI, pressing one
of the 8'1
,harpsichord buttons and then pressing akey. IThis connects the
,corresponding keyboard to the MIDI output, and issues aprogram change
·determined from the key. Ifno key is pressed before MIDIis released, the
MIDI output channel is disconnected from the keyboard.

Channels 12 through 16 are intellded for sequencillg, not for playillg remote
sound modules, which is
WIlY they use channelllumbers that tIle MT-32 does
not respond to. These channels are turned
off as agroup, either by receipt of
aMIDI stop, Start or Continue byte, or by holding the MIDI button and
pressing the TRANSPOSER button. (Channe114 is not used). i
Channels 2and 3can be recorded by asequellcer, too, by driving the
sequencer
IN from the sound module THRU, or the sound module IN from
the sequencer THRUport.
Input chaPJIels
13 through 16 are always responsive to MIDI messages, so no
special action needs to
be taken in order to enable playback. Cllamlels 2and
3also respond to input, and are conveniently echoed onto Olltput channels 4
and 5. This allows
extemallayer sounds to be included in asequence, while
completely separate
extemallayer sounds are played by the perfonner.
MIDI PROGRAM NUMBERS:
In channels 13 through 16, program bank 0is used to access the standard GS
sounds,
and program bank 4000H (40 in tIle MSB and 0in the LSB) is used
to access the harpsichord and ensemble voices. They use the following
program numbers:

POWER:
To change the operating voltage:
MAKE SURE THE INSTRUME.-VT IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE
POWER OUTLET.
1. Remove the retainer screw on tIle grille frame and lift up gently.
Disconnect the speaker cable at the plug and set the grille aside.
2. Note, the power supply is located in the center
of the console. On
the edge
of the power supply next to the transfonner is afour
section strip socket with ablack wire attached (this is the line
switch). Remove the wire from its setting and place in the desired
voltage setting.
CONNECTING THE SUSTAIN PEDAL:
To connect the sustain pedal remove the grille assembly and set aside, tllen:
1. Place the sustain pedal at an angle under the harpsichord case with
the brass pedal toward the keyboards. Place the cable in the one
inch hole on the bottom
of the case and pull all the wire through
lUltil it is all inside the case. (Be carefill not to pinch the cable
between the case and the pedal base.)
2. Install the three black knob fasteners and'secure the pedal
in place.
30 Place the cable in the fasteners provided on the bottom of the case
and secure.
4. On the audio board (Jack Board) is awhite connector with ablack
wire loop. This connector connects two pins together when the
sustain pedal is not used. When connecting the sustain pedal,
remove this connector from the male connector "J-14". Save ti,e
silorting
plug for suell times wIlen ti,e sustain pedal is notused.
5. Attach the white connector to the connector #J-14 on the audio
board. This plug has aridge on its edge. This edge snaps next to
the flange
of the connector 1-14.

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS:
Located on the output panel on tIle under left-hand side of the
instrument are stereo 1/4 inch phone
jacks for input of other
instruments and line outputs for other amplification. The inputs
have alevel adjustment knob located on the panel next to the input
ports.
GLOBAL TUNING:
Located on the output panel on the under left-hand side of the
instrument is aGlobal tuning knob. The harpsichord, when fust
turned on, is automatically set at A-440. Ifhand adjustment is required
this tuning function will
be activated when moved. In the section on
tuning features it was pointed out that the instrument can be set for
other tuning standards. The Global tuniIlg knob will fme tune these
settings when it is moved.
GENERAL MIDI:
The harpsichord supports the "GM" specifications. \Vhen connected to a
sequencer and
MUSIC DATA is played, the unit becomes ageneral MIDI
player. Both the keyboards play MIDI channel #1
.. The upper manual plays at
the 4' pitch and the lower manual plays at tIle standard 8' pitch. For most
MUSIC DATA and lor "ism" MIDI, channel
#1 is the piano.
TO SET THE HARPSICHORD IN "GM" MODE:
HOLD THE MIDI BUTTON AND PRESS THE
TRANSPOSER BUTTON.
All voice buttOl1S will become
inactive.
To reverse tllis condition holdtI,e MIDI button
andpress tI,e TRANSPOSER button.

2. FUSE:
The fuse for 110vac to 120vac use "Buss Fuse" GDC 3.15A

REPLACE WITH THE CORRECT FUSE ONLY.

3. MIDI:
The three DIN connectors are f'Jr MIDI. MIDI will allow this
instrument to operate other instruments as well as being operated
by other instruments. The INPUT port is for incoming
information to operate the harpsichord. The THRU. connector
couples the input out to be used with
other equipment and not
affected by the harpsichord. The OUTPUT is an output port that
can be connected to other equipment such as the Sound Canvas
and is controlled by the harpsichord. The upper manual sends
MIDI messages out MIDI channel #3. The lower manual sends
MIDI messages out MIDI channel #2.
4. AUX INPUT:
The auxiliary inputs are stereo. These inputs have large latitude
of input sensitivity that are adjustable from -20db to +4 db.
These ports are designed for other l\IIDI equipment such as the
PR-300 ,Sound Canvas,
and others giving an audio input port.
5. AUX OUTPUT:
The auxiliary output ports al~e line level outputs. These output
ports
are designed to drive external amplification systems and PA
systems. .
6. POWER ADJUST:
The power adjust switch allows the power of the instrument to be
reduced by half.
For playing in asmall room use the ROOM
setting. For a larger environment and with an ORCHESTRA, use
the HALL setting.
7. TUNING:
The tuning knob allows the instrument to be tuned from A-415 to
A-470. Pitch 440 is
marked as the standard pitch on the panel.
This control will be disconnected when the pitch is selected from
the harpsichord's control panel. Then by moving the TUNING
control
it is active again and can be used to fine tune the pitch
range that is selected.

8. EXT LEVEL:
The EXIT LEVEL input is for an expression pedal. The Roland
part number is EV-5
9. AUX SUSTAIN: '
This input
is for an auxiliary sustain pedal. The Roland part
number is DP-2 or DP-6
