Introduction
With a Sandberg FireWire Hub you can
connect several FireWire devices to your
computer. The Sandberg FireWire Hub
supports transfer of data at up to 400 Mbit/
s.
• Your Sandberg FireWire hub allows you
to connect several FireWire devices to
your computer, thus functioning as a
central point for your FireWire devices.
• As the hub has an amplifying effect, it
may be used as an intermediate link for
devices that you want to position further
than 5 metres away from the computer.
The cabling may, however, only be of a
maximum of 10 metres.
• Your FireWire hub may also be used to
create a FireWire network between
several computers in Windows®Me and
XP, allowing high transfer speeds be-
tween the connected computers. It is
not possible, however, to use cables that
are longer than 5 metres.
• PlayStation®2 also includes FireWire,
which means you can connect several
PlayStation®2s together via your
Sandberg FireWire Hub. In this way you
can play games via the fast FireWire
network. This is only possible, however,
if the game supports i.LINK.
Your Sandberg FireWire Hub has a built-in
fuse for every port that will cut out if that
particular port is overloaded. This avoids
damage to both hub and computer.
Installation in Windows® 98SE/
Me/2000/XP
Note: During installation you may need
your Windows installation CD-ROM.
1. Start your computer up in Windows.
2. Connect the FireWire plug on the accom-
panying cable to one of the FireWire
ports in the hub.
3. Connect the FireWire plug on the accom-
panying cable to the FireWire port in
your computer.
4. Windows states “Found New Hardware”.
5. The required drivers will be installed
automatically.
Your Sandberg FireWire Hub is now installed
and ready for use.
Note: The small 4-pin FireWire jack in the
hub is for devices that use this connection,
such as certain kinds of digital video cam-
eras. This jack can also be used to connect
to the computer with a 4pM-6pM cable, e.g.
Sandberg item no. 506-28. In this case, use
of the external power supply is mandatory.
External power supply
You may use the accompanying power
supply to increase the current capacity of
the hub’s FireWire ports. Once the power
supply has been connected, the hub auto-
matically selects mains supply. Mains supply
is required for larger, more demanding
FireWire devices, or if several devices are
connected to the hub.

Connecting devices
Connect the plugs from your FireWire de-
vices to the ports in the hub, while your
computer is switched on.
Note: Cable length between a FireWire
device and the hub must not exceed 5
metres.
Troubleshooting
If the hub’s integral overload fuse is acti-
vated, the hub will switch off.
The hub can be restarted by pulling out the
power supply plug and putting it back in
again. If not using the external power
supply, restart by pulling out the FireWire
cable from the computer and putting it back
in again.
• If you are unable to connect to devices
connected to the hub, check that the
cables used are no longer than 5 me-
tres.
• If you have problems with network
games on PlayStation®2, check whether
the game in question supports i.LINK.
Introduction to networks
Your FireWire Hub can be used as a hub in a
standard Windows®ME or XP network. The
following section gives instructions on how
to set up a network.
Computers in a network are connected to
each other, which means they can transfer
files and share resources with other com-
puters on the network.
Protocols
For computers to be able to communicate
over a network, they all need to keep to the
same guidelines and standards for commu-
nication. This necessitates a common set of
rules to be used by all the computers.
These sets of rules are called “protocols”. It
is therefore vital that the same protocols
are installed on the computers in the net-
work. In order to facilitate smooth commu-
nication, each individual computer on the
network must also have a unique name.
The TCP/IP protocol uses a number of
figures to distinguish between the individual
computers, while NetBEUI uses the actual
name of the computer.

TCP/IP protocol
TCP/IP identifies computers by numbering
them according to a system that can be
likened to an international telephone num-
ber – this is called an IP address. The num-
ber will consist of 4 sets of figures from 0-
255 divided by a point (“dot” – EHP), in the
same way that an international telephone
number consists of: country code + regional
code + local code + subscriber number (the
IP address similarly consists of a subnet
mask that must be the same for all com-
puters in the same network. 255.255.255.0
is most often used).
For several computers to be able to commu-
nicate, they must be on the same local
network. In this example, the first 3 sets of
figures must be the same, and the last must
be unique to each computer.
E.g.: The computers have the following IP
numbers:
1) 10.0.0.1
2) 10.0.0.2
3) 10.0.0.3
All of the computers have the subnet mask
255.255.255.0 and belong to the same
“workgroup”.
These three networked computers will be
able to communicate, as all belong to the
same local network but have each a unique
IP number.
Setting up network protocols
TCP/IP is the standard protocol for commu-
nication in the vast majority of programs,
and is also the protocol that is used for
communication across the internet.
Windows®Me
Setting up the TCP/IP protocol
1. Press “Start”, “Settings”, “Control
panel”. Double click on the “Network”
icon.
2. Double click on “TCP/IP - NDIS 1394
network card” and select “Specify an
IP address”. Type in an IP address
(see example below).
3. Click “OK” and close the “Network”
dialog box by clicking “OK”.
The IP address will be activated after you
restart the computer.
Examples of IP addresses:
Computer 1, IP address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Computer 2, IP address: 10.0.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
This sequence should be continued for each
computer on the network.
The gateway and DNS server address fields
can be left blank. These are for use when
establishing a link to the internet via a
traditional network.

Setting up computer names
1. Press “Start”, “Settings”, “Control
panel”.
2. Double click on the “Network” icon and
select the “Identification” tab.
3. Then write the name you want to use as
a “computer name”, as well as the name
of the “workgroup” to which the com-
puter will belong.
4. Click “OK”. The changes will take effect
after you restart the computer.
Note: The computer name must differ from
those of other computers in the network.
For simplicity’s sake, the workgroup name
can be set to the same for all computers, so
that it is easier to locate the individual
computers on the network.
Windows®XP
Setting up the TCP/IP protocol
1. Press “Start”, “Control panel” and
“Network and Internet connec-
tions”. Double click on “Network
connections”.
2. Double click on “1394 Connection”.
Then click on “Properties”. Double
click on “Internet protocol (TCP/
IP)”, select “Use the following IP
address” and type in the IP address
(see example below).
3. Click “OK” in the dialog box and close
the “Properties for 1394 connection”
dialog box by clicking “OK”.
The IP address will now be active.
Examples of IP addresses:
Computer 1, IP address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Computer 2, IP address: 10.0.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
This sequence should be continued for each
computer on the network.
The gateway and DNS server address fields
can be left blank. These are for use when
establishing a link to the internet via an
ADSL connection, for example.

Setting up computer names
1. Click on “Start” and “Control panel”.
2. Click on “Performance and Mainte-
nance”, “System”, and select the
“Computer Name” tab. Click on
“Change”.
3. Then write the name you want to use as
a “computer name”, as well as the name
of the “workgroup” to which the com-
puter will belong.
4. Click “OK” and close the “System prop-
erties” dialog box by clicking “OK”. The
changes will take effect after you restart
the computer.
Note: The computer name must differ from
those of other computers in the network.
For simplicity’s sake, the workgroup name
can be set to the same for all computers, so
that it is easier to locate the individual
computers on the network.
Sharing drives and folders
For others to be able to access the re-
sources on a computer, “file sharing” must
be activated on the computer you want to
access.
Activating file sharing in Windows®Me
1. Press “Start”, “Settings”, “Control
panel” and double click on the
“Network” icon.
2. Click on “File and printer sharing”,
select “Other users must have access
to my files” and click “OK”. In the
same window you can also activate
printer sharing.
After restart it will now be possible to right
click on drives and folders and select
“Sharing”. Next you can specify how ac-
cess to the shared resources is to be man-
aged.
Activating file sharing in Windows®XP
1. Right click on the drive or folder you
want to share over the network and
select “Sharing and Security”.
2. Select “Share this folder” and then
click “OK”.
Note: If you want to share an entire drive,
click on “If you understand the risk but
still want to share the root of the drive,
click here” on the “Sharing” tab.
Using the network
Once the network has been set up and is
functioning correctly, it is possible to access
other computers and their resources, e.g.
read or copy the content of hard disks and
drives, share printers etc.

Troubleshooting
To check whether a connection has been
established between the computers on the
network, there are a few simple tests you
can use to confirm this.
The UNC Test
With the UNC test you can check whether
there is a basic connection between the
computers.
Select “Start”, then “Run”. Type in the
name of the computer you are testing the
connection to as follows: \\ followed by the
name of the computer you are testing the
connection to. E.g. \\computer1. Then press
‘Enter’. If there is a connection, a window
will appear with the contents of shared
folders and drives on the computer you are
testing the connection to.
The Ping Test
With the ping command you can check
whether there is a connection to another
computer on the network, and that TCP/IP
has been set up correctly.
Start a DOS command prompt by clicking
“Start”, “Run...” and write “Command”.
Write “ping” followed by the IP address of
the computer you are testing the connection
to, e.g. C:\> Ping 10.0.0.2.
If a connection to the specified computer is
then established, a sequence consisting of
“Response from” followed by a number will
appear. If there is no connection, the mes-
sage “Request timed out” will appear.
The ping command also allows you to test
whether the network card and protocols are
set up correctly on each individual com-
puter. This is done as follows:
C:\> ping 10.0.0.X, (X is the last number of
the IP address on your own computer).
If the FireWire network card and IP proto-
cols have been set up correctly, a sequence
of “Response from” messages will appear,
indicating that the network’s basic compo-
nents have been installed correctly.
Are the computers unable to locate
each other?
1. Check that the cables have been
connected properly.
2. Check that the computers under the
“Identification” tab in the network
setup have been set up so that all
computers on the network have
different computer names. See the
section on “Setting up computer
names” for the relevant version of
Windows.
3. Check that the IP addresses have
been set up correctly. See the sec-
tion on configuring the TCP/IP proto-
col.

Med Sandberg FireWire Hub har du mulig-
hed for at slutte flere FireWire enheder til
din computer. Sandberg FireWire Hub un-

• Din Sandberg FireWire hub giver dig
mulighed for at koble flere FireWire
enheder til din computer, og fungerer på

Installation i Windows®98/
Me/2000/XP
Bemærk: Under installationen skal du
muligvis bruge din Windows installations
CD-ROM.
1. Start computeren op i Windows.
2. Tilslut FireWire stikket på det medføl-
gende kabel til én af FireWire portene i
hub’en.
3. Tilslut FireWire stikket på det medføl-
gende kabel til FireWire porten i din
computer.
4. Windows meddeler, at der er ’Fundet ny
hardware’.
5. De nødvendige drivere installeres auto-
matisk.
Din Sandberg FireWire Hub er nu installeret
og klar til brug.
Bemærk: Det lille 4-pin FireWire stik i
hub’en er til brug for enheder, der benytter
denne tilslutning som f.eks. visse typer af
digitale videokameraer. Dette stik kan også

Den eksterne strømforsyning
Med den medfølgende strømforsyning kan
du forøge strømkapaciteten på hub’ens
FireWire porte. Når strømforsyningen er
tilsluttet, vælger hub’en automatisk netfor-
syning. Netforsyning er nødvendig til større
og mere krævende FireWire enheder, eller
hvis der tilkobles flere enheder til hub’en.
Tilslutning af enheder
Tilslut stikkene fra dine FireWire enheder til
portene i hub’en, mens computeren er
tændt.
Bemærk: Kabellængden mellem en FireWi-
re enhed og hub må ikke overstige 5 meter.
Problemløsning
Hvis hub’ens indbyggede overbelastnings-
sikring aktiveres, slukker hub’en.
Hub’en kan genstartes ved at tage stikket til
strømforsyningen ud og sætte det i igen.
• Kan du ikke få forbindelse til enheder
tilsluttet hub’en, kontrollér at de an-
vendte kabler ikke er længere end 5
meter.
• Har du problemer med netværksspil på
PlayStation®2, undersøg da om det
pågældende spil understøtter i.LINK.
Introduktion til Netværk
Din FireWire Hub kan bruges som hub i et
almindeligt netværk under Windows®ME og
XP. I det følgende instrueres du i opsætning
af et netværk.
I et netværk har computerne forbindelse til
hinanden, og kan på den måde overføre
filer og dele ressourcer med andre compu-
tere i netværket.
Protokoller
For at computerne skal kunne kommunikere
over et netværk, kræver det, at alle compu-
terne overholder de samme retningslinier
og standarder for kommunikation. Derfor er
det nødvendigt, at der findes et fælles
regelsæt, som samtlige computere benyt-
ter. Disse regelsæt kaldes ”Protokoller”. Det
er derfor vigtigt, at der er installeret de
samme protokoller på computerne i netvær-
ket.
For at kommunikationen skal kunne foregå
uhindret, skal de enkelte computere i net-
værket tillige have et navn, som er forskel-
ligt fra de andre.
TCP/IP protokollen anvender en række cifre
for at skelne mellem de enkelte computere,
mens NetBEUI anvender computernavnet
på computeren.

TCP/IP protokollen
TCP/IP protokollen identificerer computere
ved at nummerere dem efter et system, der
kan sammenlignes med et internationalt
telefonnummer - dette kaldes en IP-
adresse. Nummereringen består af 4 sæt
cifre fra 0-255 adskilt af et punktum, på
samme måde som et internationalt telefon-
nummer består af: landenr. + regionsnr. +
lokalnr. + abonnentnr. (IP-adressen består
tillige af en subnet/undernetmaske, som
skal være ens for alle computere i det sam-
me netværk. Oftest bruges 255.255.255.0).
For at flere computere skal kunne kommuni-
kere, skal de være på det samme lokalnet. I
dette eksempel skal de første 3 sæt cifre
være ens, og det sidste sæt skal være unikt
for hver computer.
Eks.: Computerne har følgende IP-numre:
1) 10.0.0.1
2) 10.0.0.2
3) 10.0.0.3
Alle computerne har subnet/undernetmaske
255.255.255.0 og er medlem af den samme
”Arbejdsgruppe”.
Disse tre computere i et netværk vil kunne
kommunikere, da alle tilhører samme lokal-
netværk og samtidig har et unikt IP-
nummer.
Opsætning af netværksprotokoller
TCP/IP protokollen er standard protokollen
til kommunikation i langt de fleste program-
mer, og er samtidig den protokol, der an-
vendes i kommunikationen på internettet.
Windows®Me
Opsætning af TCP/IP protokollen
1. Klik ”Start”, ”Indstillinger”,
”Kontrolpanel”. Dobbeltklik på ikonet
”Netværk”.
2. Dobbeltklik på ”TCP/IP - NDIS 1394
netværkskort” og vælg ”Angiv en IP-
adresse”. Indtast en IP-adresse, se evt.
i eksemplet nedenfor.
3. Klik ”OK” og luk dialogboksen
”Netværk” ved at klikke ”OK”.
Efter genstart er IP-adressen aktiveret.
Eksempler på IP-adresser:
Computer 1, IP-adresse: 10.0.0.1
Undernetmaske: 255.255.255.0
Computer 2, IP-adresse: 10.0.0.2
Undernetmaske: 255.255.255.0
Rækken fortsættes for hver computer på
netværket.
Gateway- samt DNS-server adressefelterne
kan efterlades blanke. Disse er til brug for
etablering af forbindelse til Internet via et
traditionelt netværk.
