OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
UNPACKING ANDSETTING UP
Thismanualcoversinstallation and operation ofthe RS-330DigitalFM/AMStereo
Clock Radio.The optionalRS-332 High-FidelityClock RadioStereo Speakeris
required forstereo listening (although you can listen through stereo headphones
withthe RS-330 byitself).
Afterunpacking the RS-330,plug itspowercordintoan appropriateACpower
outlet. 120 voltACpowerisstandardthroughoutmostofNorthAmerica.Voltage
variesinotherpartsofthe world.The RS-330 mayemita“thump”when first
plugged in;thisisnormal.
Thereisan FMMODEswitchnexttothe controlcablejack on the back panel.
If you areusing the RS-332 High-FidelityClock RadioStereo Speaker,setthis
switchtoSTEREOtohearstereo broadcasts.If you arelistening tothe RS-330
byitself, setthisswitchtoMONO.
THEDISPLAY
The fluorescentdisplayshowsthe currenttime,station frequency,alarmsettings,
and operationalmodes.
Alightsensoratthe baseofthe displayautomaticallyadjuststhe display’s
brightness tocompensateforchangesinroomlighting.You can modifythe
automaticsetting withthe recessed knob on the bottomofthe RS-330.Turn
thisknob clockwisetomakethe displaybrighter,counter-clockwisetomakeit
dimmer.

EThe displayshowseitherthe station frequency,orthe currenttime,butnotboth
simultaneously.Wheneveryou turnon the radio,orselectanewstation,the
displayautomaticallyswitchestothe station frequency.The displaywill auto-
maticallyreturntothe timeafterseven seconds.Toviewthe station frequency,
press the FREQ(frequency)button .
BACKUPSYSTEM
The RS-330 featuresabuilt-insupercapacitorbackup systemtoretainalarm
settingsand station presetsforup toone hourwhen the unitisunplugged or
powerislost. The clock alsocontinuestokeep time,asaccuratelyaswhen
connected tothe power.It will takeatleasttwohoursafterplugging in,beforethe
backup systemisfunctional.
Pleasenotethatthe backup systemretainsonlythe radioand clock settings.It
doesnotsupplyenough powertoilluminatethe displayorplaythe radio.
POSITIONING THERS-330
The RS-330 shouldbe placed whereitisnotexposed tohigh temperaturesor
humidity.
Although the RS-330 Clock Radiosoundsgreatbyitself, when paired withthe
optionalRS-332 High-FidelityPowered Speaker,itprovidesbrilliantstereo sound.
You maywanttoreposition the RS-330 and the RS-332 forthe bestsound.They
shouldbe aboutequallydistantfromyourusuallistening position.The fartheryou
separatethe RS-330 and RS-332,the morespaciousthe sound becomes.Plac-
ing eitherunitclosertoawall orcornerproducesmorebass.
Note:The powercordand extension cableshouldbe located whereitcannotbe
chewed bypetsortripped over.
Front-panelcontrolbuttonsareback-litforeaseofuseinadarkened room.
RADIOOPERATION
Press the POWERON/OFF switchtoturnon the radio.Adjustthe VOLUME
controltoacomfortablelevel.Press POWERON/OFF asecond timetoturn
the radiooff.
The TREBLEand BASS controlscan be settotaste,ortomakethe
programmaterialsound better.Turning up the bass when listening atlowvolume
levelsgivesarichersound.Turning the controlstowardthe +markincreasesthe
trebleorbass.Turning themtowardthe _markdecreasesthe trebleorbass.

TUNING
The RS-330 receivesbothFMand AMbroadcasts.When the radioisfirstturned
on,the lettersFMwill appearon the displayindicating thatthe RS-330 issetto
receiveFMtransmissions.Tochange totheAMband,press the BANDbutton
.The displaywill change toAM.Press thisbutton asecond timetoreturnto
the FMband.
APS (AUTOPROGRAMSTATIONS)
When firstplugged intothe power,theAPS (AutoProgramStations)systemwill
scan fromthe lowfrequencytohigh frequencyand storethe stationsautomati-
callybypriorityofsignalstrengthwhen theyarefound.When APS iscompleted,
the radiowill stop atPreset1ofPage 1_the strongestsignalstation inyour
tuning area.TorestarttheAPS system,selectthe required radioband (eitherFM
orAM)bypressing the BAND button .Then press the APS button on the
rearpanelformorethan twoseconds_APS will appearinthe display.
MANUALTUNING
Press and releaseTUNE/TIMEbuttonstomoveone step up (∧)ordown(∨)in
frequency.Eachpress changesthe FMfrequency by100 kHzand the AM
frequency by10 kHz.Holddowneitherbutton toscan rapidly.
SCANTUNING
Press and holdthe TUNE/TIMEbuttonsformorethan one-halfsecond toscan
the selected band and the tunerwill stop automaticallywhen itlandson an active
station.
PRESET TUNING
The RS-330 hassixPRESETtuning buttonslabeled 1through 6.You may
storeup to24 stations(6stationson Page 1and 6stationson Page 2on each
FM/AMband).
A.Tune the RS-330 tothe desired station bymanualtuning orscan tuning.
B.Press MEMObutton ,displaywill showMEMOand a‘
_’.
C.Selectthe page you wouldliketostorebypressing MemoryPage 1/Page 2
(P1/P2)button .
D.Then press the selected PRESETbutton,the displaywill showthe page and
the presetnumber.

ERECALL ASTATION
Torecall apresetstation,simplypress the BAND button toselectAMorFM,
press P1/P2toselectthe page then press the desired Presetbutton.
SETTING THECLOCKANDALARMS
You mustpress the TIMESETbutton on the back ofthe RS-330 beforeyou
can setthe clock orthe alarmtimes.(When you plug the clock radioinforthe
firsttime,the displaywill show12:00.)
Pressing TIMESETcyclesthrough the settingsinthisorder:clock →Alarm1→
Alarm2→clock,and soforth.You can setthe clock oralarmsinanyorder.
When you havefinished,do notpress TIMESETagain.Simplywaitafew
secondsforthe RS-330 toreturntonormaloperation.
Tosetthe clock,press the TIMESETbutton on the rearofthe unitonce.The
clock displayblinks toshowthatthe clock isreadytobe set. Press TUNE/TIME
buttonstochange the displaytoshowthe correcttime.Pressing the (∧)
button will increasethe timeand (∨)will decreaseit. Notethat12:00 AMis
midnight, and 12:00 PMisnoon.
Press TIMESETbutton twiceand the 6:00AM“start”alarmtimewill flash.
Press TUNE/TIMEbuttonstoselectthe timeforAlarm1.Afterseven seconds
the displaywill stop flashing and the ALARM1icon will appearindicatingAlarm1
isset.
TosetAlarm2press TIMESETbutton three times.ALARM2icon will be
displayed and 7:00AMwill be the “start”setting.Followthe sameprocedureas
forsettingAlarm1.
UNDERSTANDING THEALARMSYSTEM
The RS-330’s dual-alarmsystemisunique.Wake-up time,wake-up mode,and
wake-up volumecan be setindependentlyfortwopeople.Operation istherefore
slightlydifferentfromotherclock radios.When the RS-330 isused alone,both
Alarm1andAlarm2functionsoccurthrough the RS-330.
The mostimportantdifferenceisthatthe RS-330 and RS-332 operateindepen-
dentlyduring wakeup.Radiosound (orthe beeper) ischanneled tothe RS-330
forAlarm1and tothe RS-332 forAlarm2.ThisfeaturekeepsAlarm1from
disturbing the sleeperwaiting forAlarm2.The radioalsoswitchestomono
reception forthe activated alarm.

ACTIVATING THEALARMS
Toturnon Alarm1,press theALARM1button on the top ofthe RS-330.
ALARM1will appearon the display.Likewise,pressing ALARM2button turns
onAlarm2.
The buttonsnexttothe 1and 2alarmbuttonsselectthe alarmmode:wake-to-
radioorwake-to-beeper,.The radioorbeepercomeson quietlyforafew
seconds,then slowly“rampsup”tothe presetvolume.You mayadjustalarm
volumelevelbyrotating theALARMLEVELcontrolknob on the rearpanelof
theRS-330.
The alarmbeeperisactuallyaseriesofelectronicbeeps.The beepsforeach
alarmaredifferent: Alarm2hasaslightlyhigherfrequency thanAlarm1.
Theradioalarmwill always bethePreset1station ofyourlastband
(eitherAMorFM)selection.
AFTERTHEALARMHASGONEOFF
If you’dlikeabitmoresleep,press the SNOOZEbar.The alarmwill then be
inSnoozestatus.The alarmstopsand will startagaininfiveminutes,and may
be used inintervalsof5minutestoamaximumofone hour.The displaywill
showthe “sleeping person”icon withZZZs.Toturnthe radio/alarmoff, press the
POWERON/OFF button.
SETTING SLEEP TIMER(AUTOSHUTOFF)
Press SLEEP button ,the radiowill comeon (ifnotalreadyon),Sleep time
and “sleeping person”icon on the displaywill flash.Afterseven seconds,the
displaywill stop flashing,the Sleep icon will remainon the displayand the timer
will be automaticallysetforone hour.Atthe end ofthistime,the radiowill shut
off.
If you wouldlikethe radiotoplayforalongerorshortertime,press the SLEEP
button then usethe TUNE/TIMEbuttonstosetanylengthoftime,fromone
minuteto6hours.Tosee the remaining sleep time,press the SLEEP button
again.ToreleaseSleep statusfunction,press POWERON/OFF button.

ESETTING COUNTDOWNTIMER
Press TIMERbutton ,Timertime(1:00)and “hourglass”icon will flashon the
displayindicating the timerisreadytobe set. Press TUNE/TIMEbuttonstoset
the timertime.Afterseven seconds,the displaywill stop flashing and the Timer
icon appearson the display.The timerisautomaticallysetforone hourbutcan
be setforamaximumofsixhours.When the timeisup,abeeperwill sound.
The beepermaybe turned off bypressing the POWERON/OFF button orthe
TIMERbutton.Beforetimeisup,pressing the TIMERbutton will indicateany
remaining time,asecond pressing releasesthe timer’s setting.
HEADPHONELISTENING
Thereisamini-jack forstereo headphoneson the RS-330.Plugging head-
phonesintothisjack automaticallyshutsoff the speakers.It’s agood idea toturn
downthe volumebeforeconnecting the headphones,soyou don’t“blast”the
phonesoryourears.
Movethe FMMODEswitchtoSTEREOwhen using headphones.Otherwise,
stereo broadcastswill be heardinmono.
LINEOUT
The LINEOUTjack on the RS-330 can be connected toaHi-Fiamplifier
allowing the RS-330 toserveasan audiosystem’s tuner.
AUXILIARY INPUT
ACDplayer,tape deck,oranyhigh-levelsignalcan be connected totheAUXIN
jack on the RS-330.(You cannotplug inaturntabledirectly;apreampis
needed toboostthe weaksignalfromthe phono pickup.)The connecting cable
shouldhavea1/8"(3mm)stereo mini-plug.Displaywill showAUXwhen the plug
iscorrectlyplugged inand theAUXON/OFF button ison.Toplay,pressAUX
ON/OFF button .Press thisbutton againtoreturntothe radio.
FMANDAMANTENNAS
FM/AMantenna terminals,arelocated on the back panelofthe RS-330.
Usea50 ohmAMwireantenna and a300 ohmT-Type FMantenna forbetter
reception.
Attachthe 300 ohmT-Type FMantenna tothe FMscrews.The antenna is
made ofthree wiresections.The longestofthe three has“U”shaped leadsatthe
ends,and connectstothe RS-330.The twoshortersectionsarethe antenna
itself. Theymustbe stretched outhorizontally.Despiteitssimplicity,this
antenna shouldprovide satisfactoryreception inmostcitiesand suburbs.

If you havereception problems,orcannotreceiveadistantstation,you mayneed
amorepowerfulantenna.YourProton retailercan helpyou.
THERESET BUTTON
The RS-330 isactuallyaminiaturecomputersystem.Aswithanycomputer,
staticelectricityorpowerline noisemaycausethe RS-330 to“lock up.”This
problemcan usuallybe corrected byunplugging the clock radioforafewminutes.
Thereisalsoaresetbutton on the bottomofthe RS-330 whichperformsthe
samefunction.Ineithercase,you will havetoresetthe clock and alarmsand
APS will resetthe stations.
MAINTENANCE
The black knitgrillecovercan be cleaned withavacuumcleaner’s upholstery
nozzle.The cabinetcan be cleaned withaslightlydampcloth.If stubborndirt
remains,applyasmall amountofageneral-purposecleanser(suchasEndustfor
Electronics)directlytothe cleaning cloth.NEVERSPRAYANYLIQUIDS
DIRECTLYONTHEUNITand do notusesolventssuchasalcoholorbenzene.
