Thank you for purchasing our product, Wavelength & Bandwidth Tunable Filter OTF-
980. This Instruction Manual contains information and precautions necessary for the
operation of OTF-980. This manual is intended for those with sufcient knowledge to
conduct the evaluation of laser danger and its safe control. Before operating OTF-980,
you should rst thoroughly read this Instruction Manual and become familiar with its
contents. After reading this Instruction Manual, keep it close at hand for easy reference
at any time.
The packing materials and box of this product are needed for long-term storage or
transportation, therefore, keep them even after unpacking this product.

Before operating OTF-980, please read carefully this instruction manual.
This Operation Manual consists of 11 Chapters:
Chapters 1 to 4 illustrate the outline of this product, safety precautions, and installation
of the product.
Chapters 5 describe how to operate the product. Santec recommends that
Chapters 1 to 4 are read carefully before proceeding to this chapter.
Chapter 6 explains information on the communication functions such as external
control of OTF-980.

Please note the following points when utilizing the instrument in order to protect and
prevent instrument failure.
The unit should not be operated in any of the following circumstances:
• If water or other liquid is spilt on the unit.
• When the unit is exposed to moisture.
• When the unit is cleaned or moved.
• If damage is found to the mains cord
• When the unit condenses.

As for this product, when the laser is input from INPUT, the laser is output from
OUTPUT. The laser beam may cause permanent damage to your sense of sight
if it comes in contact with your eyes. Therefore special attention and careful
manipulation must be taken when operating this instrument.

Need to turn off the main power switch on the upper power socket at the rear
panel in order to completely shut off the power of this product.

CAUTION
Pay attention to the following guidelines for safe, trouble-free operation.
This product is a high-precision device and be designed to be used indoors (Pollution
Degree 2).
• Do not place over a height 2000 meter.
• Do not place in direct sunlight.
• Do not place under high temperature and high humidity.
• Do not use in an environment where combustible gas is generated.
• Do not place in an environment with dust, dirt, salt, or corrosive gas.
• Do not place in an area subject to large vibrations.
• Do not place in an area subject to noise by electric eld, magnetic eld, etc.
• Do not place in an area where the unit is subject to falling objects landing on it.
• Do not place with possible exposure to water.
• Do not insert and pull out the power cord with wet hands or operate the equipment
with wet hands.
Be sure to install the OTF-980 in a level place (less than 5 degree). It is
recommended to install this product on a vibration-proof base. The unit may not
operate correctly if the device is set in an inclined position.
The mainframe of the OTF-980 weighs about 8 kg. Please ensure that the table or
shelf upon which it is installed has sufcient strength.
Clearance of 5 cm at the rear side of the unit should be allowed for proper ventilation.
Please don't remove rubber legs from the bottom panel.
4-1 Operating Environments
In the case of continuous operation for more than 24 hours after the unit is turned
on, we recommend you to restart the OTF-980 for equipment maintenance.

4-2 Power Supply
This product uses a 3-line power cord and plug with a protective ground line. Power
cord may be attached and detached, Connect it to the power source socket at the rear
panel. Use the power cord supplied with the unit. Do not use the inappropriate power
code.
This product complies with overvoltage category Ⅱand can operate between 100 to
240 Volts, and 50 to 60Hz AC Line. Temporary over voltage (TOV) is 1,500 Volts.
Use two surge resistant type fuses. T1.6A/250V(100-240V)
If the power cable is connected while the main power switch is in the “on” position, the
power supply will be enter“standby mode.”
CAUTION
This product is grounded by the ground line in the supplied power cable. This
product must be properly grounded to avoid electrical shock and other dangers.
Please make sure that this product is properly grounded to avoid electrical shock.
In addition, please place this product in a location that allows the user to easily
unplug the power cable, in case of any device malfunction.
Do not insert and pull out the power cord with wet hands or operate the equipment
with wet hands. It may cause electric shock.

1. The power cord socket is located on the unit’s rear panel. Plug the power cord
into the socket.
2. Please turn on the main switch on the rear panel and then turn on the power
switch on the front panel.
1. When the unit is powered on it will enter its start up sequence. During this
sequence the Santec logo will be displayed on the touch panel (as seen below).

5 -2 Optical Fiber Connection
Remove the cap of the optical “INPUT” connector and connect the optical ber to the
connector.
CAUTION
Before connecting an optical ber, always clean the end face of the connector.
In addition, we recommend that the socket is also periodically cleaned (see
Section 9-2). If dirt is present on either the end face of the connector or the
socket, the insertion loss will be increased. In addition, when high optical
powers are used there is the possibility that the connectors may be damaged by
scorching. Before connecting the input light, check that the optical power does
not exceed the maximum specied level for the OTF-980. The maximum level
is +27dBm. If the optical input exceeds this limit, there is a risk of damage to the
OTF-980’s internal optical elements.
