1Safety Information
Please note the following points when utilizing the instrument in order to protect the instrument, and
prevent instrument failure.
INPUT, OUTPUT terminals
• Avoid impact or shock.
• Keep this product away from water.
• Do not disassemble this product.
• Do not place anything on this product.
• Do not place in direct sunlight.
• Do not place in an environment with dust, dirt, salt, or corrosive gas.
• Do not place under high temperature and high humidity.
Regarding the OTF-350, when a laser source is input to the “INPUT”, the laser is output
from “OUTPUT”. The laser beam may cause permanent damage to your sense of sight if
it comes in contact with your eyes. Therefore special attention and careful manipulation
must be taken when operating this instrument. When the unit is not in use, be sure to use
the protection cap (shown in the gure below).
Pay attention to the following guidelines.

4Installation
Pay attention to the following guidelines for safe, trouble-free operation.
This product is a high-precision device:
• Do not place in direct sunlight.
• Do not place under high temperature and high humidity.
• Do not place in an environment with dust, dirt, salt, or corrosive gas.
• Do not place in an area subject to large vibrations.
• Do not place in an area where the unit is subject to falling objects landing on it.
• Do not place on an inclining area.
Be sure to install the OTF-350 in a level place (less than 5 degree). It is recommended to install
this product on a vibration-proof base. The unit may not operate correctly if the device is set in an
inclined position.
The mainframe of the OTF-350 weighs about 3.5 kg. Please ensure that the table or shelf upon which
it is installed has sufcient strength.

5Basic Operation
5-1 Optical Fiber Connection
5-2 Setting the Wavelength
Remove the cap of the optical “INPUT” connector and connect the optical ber to the connector.
Repeat the operation with the optical “OUTPUT” connector.
Set the wavelength by turning the micrometer labeled “Wavelength” for wavelength setting. Turn the
micrometer clockwise for longer wavelengths; turn counter clockwise for shorter wavelengths.
Using the clamp on the micrometer for wavelength tuning, the wavelength can be locked at the
set wavelength. Turn the clamp clockwise to lock the micrometer position; turn the clamp counter
clockwise to release and unlock.
Before connecting an optical fiber, always clean the end face of the connector. In
addition, we recommend that the socket is also periodically cleaned (see Section 8-2). If
dirt is present on either the end face of the connector or the socket, the insertion loss will
be increased. In addition, when high optical powers are used there is the possibility that
the connectors may be damaged by scorching.
Before connecting the input light, check that the optical power does not exceed the
maximum specied level for the OTF-350. The maximum level is +25dBm. If the optical
input exceeds this limit, there is a risk of damage to the OTF-350’s internal optical
elements.
Please use the micrometer within the tuning range*. (display range of 0 – 13mm) Do
not turn the micrometer beyond the tuning range. It might damage the product. The
micrometer is shipped in a locked position, to lock the optical stage and prevent damage
during shipment. Please turn the micrometer until a number is shown (0-13mm) to
unlock the optical tuning stage.
*tuning range : 0-13mm

5-3
Setting the Bandwidth
Set the bandwidth by turning the micrometer labeled “Bandwidth” for bandwidth setting. Turn the
micrometer clockwise for wider bandwidths; turn counter clockwise for narrower bandwidths.

The OTF-350 is a versatile manually optical tunable lter that allows both wavelength tuning and
passband width tuning independently. Unique precision free-space optics and an accurate tuning
mechanism deliver excellent optical control and a at-top passband shape.
Wavelength and bandwidth can independently be set with individual micrometers.
The input light is collimated by an optical ber collimator, then passes to the diffractive grating.
From the grating, the light travels through the lens on to the high reflective mirror surface.
Wavelength tuning and bandwidth tuning is done by the moving the mirror to control the amount of
reected light. The reected light travels back by the same optical path, and a circulator directs it to
the output port.
