Safety warnings
The radio-transparent stretchers are designed and manufactured so they can be
used to transfer patients up to 240kg (S1921002 ) or 300kg (S1921001).
For safety purposes it is important to check the maximum loads of the different
devices.
The maximum safety load of the combination hoist + stretcher is the lowest value
of the maximum loads.
Before using the stretcher with a hoist for patients, it is important to check the
user manual of the hoist to be sure that the hoist and its accessories (weighing
systems ..) are compatible with the use of a stretcher.
If not, or if the documentation is not present, do not use the stretcher with this
hoist, and contact the manufacturer or the distributor to get more information.
In the case of using the stretcher with an agitated patient, it is recommended to secure
the patient with slings in order to avoid the patient from falling. Patient slings can be
ordered as an option.
It is recommended to use the stretcher with a « column » hoist for patient when the
spreader bar is able to turn at 360° around an axis.
In the case of a mobile spreader bar (hoist equipped with an actuator) it is
recommended to use the stretcher with at least two caregivers: one person will
manipulate the hoist, the other should stay with the patient to insure the stability of the
stretcher.
The stretcher must be maintained only by qualified personnel and maintained only
with original spare parts.
SCALEO Medical stretchers have been designed to be used with 4 points spreader
bars used by SCALEO Medical hoists for patients.
If you use the stretcher with hoists of other manufacturers, check before use that
the spreader bar is compatible, and demand proofs of compatibility, including the
results of tests made under the EN 10535 standard.
SCALEO Medical is not responsible of accidents when using other hoists without
precaution.
SCALEO Medical stretchers can be used to carry the patient: spaces between the
slings may be used as handles.
Stretchers are medical devices , and should be installed, used and serviced by
trained personnel only
Stretchers Medical SCALEO are radio- transparent and contain only non magnetic
metal parts (aluminum, stainless steel screws)
However , the use of the stretcher with medical imaging like computed
tomography (CT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is NOT claimed by SCALEO
Medical

Assembly/ Disassembly / Getting started
Before assembling the stretcher, please ensure no damage to the packaging can be observed
before unpacking. If that is the case, remember to immediately provide written reserves to the
forwarder and contact SCALEO Medical
Packaging elements (plastic, polystyrene wrappings etc.) must not be left within
reach of children as they can be potentially harmful.
If a component is missing or deteriorated, do not assemble and use the device :
contact your vendor or SCALEO Medical
Using the stretcher requires a good experience of patient transfer, and some trainign for
assembly/disassembly operations.
Installing the strap loops S82 99 003
Locate the slot of the loops
Slide the loop in the slot, black part first.
Unpacking, assembling and disassembling the stretcher requires two people.
Strap loops are used to hang the stretcher on the hoist spreader bar.
It is mandatory to check before use that the four loops are in good state (no hitch,
no frayed seam) and to install them properly for a safe use of the stretcher.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 6 / 24
Slide the loop end in the black loop
Pull the end of the loop to insure a good
mounting.
Repeat the operation with the four loops.
Mounting and locking the stretcher halves
The locking system allows a secure assembly of the two halves of the stretcher.
The locking system cannot be unlocked or disassembled once the stretcher is hanging on the
hoist spreader bar.
Unpack the stretcher, remove all the protection parts.
Lay down the parts of the stretcher on a flat area in order to facilitate the assembly
The two operators position the two halves face to face : refer to the labels indicating the foot
end.
Lock the stretcher’s parts :
After positioning the
male part face to the
female part press the
lock pin
Insert the male part, so
that the pin is blocked
in its housing
The safety ring prevents
the accidental unlocking
of the stretcher
The system is locked
Locking is automatic: a "click" sound accompanies the lock; the locking ball must be visible
through the locking ring.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 7 / 24
Disassembly and storage
Disassembly
Lay down the stretcher on a flat area in order to facilitate the assembly
The two operators position face to face at each end of the stretcher
Press the pin through the
locking ring to unlock the
locking system
Unlock the system : slide the male
part out of the female part. Remove the male part of the
stretcher first.
The patient may be lateralized
to facilitate uncoupling
Storage
The stretcher assembly can be placed against a wall where two hooks are set, at the upper
corners of the stretcher.
Disassembled stretcher can be attached to the spreader bar of the hoist.
These modes of storage facilitate access to the stretcher, allow save space, simplify cleaning and
disinfection and ensure safe storage of the stretcher.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 8 / 24
Using the stretcher
Make sure the stretcher and the hoist have a transfer capacity adapted to the
patient's weight.
The spreader bar must always be positioned above the patient this way :
SCALEO Medical stretchers are specially developed for 4 points SCALEO Medical
spreader bars.
When the stretcher is used with a hoist from another manufacturer, make sure to it
that his lifters are compatible, if necessary require proof of compatibility.
SCALEO Medical is not responsible for any incident following the use of an
unsuitable combination.
Hoist for patients must NEVER be used to transfer, lift or transport people over
slopes.
Hoists for patients are NOT transport devices. They must be used only for short
distance transfers and are not intended to replace wheelchairs or other types of
transport devices.
In all cases of use: hang the four loops of the stretcher to the four hooks of the
spreader bar.
Make sure before transferring the patient that the four loops are in position: gently
lift the stretcher and make sure all four straps are in tension

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 9 / 24
Radio-transparent stretchers are used mainly to transfer patients whose lying position must be
maintained during all the transfer operation:
•Transferring a lying patient from a bed to a stretcher
•Lifting a patient from the floor to a bed or a stretcher
Three maneuvers must be therefore mastered by the nursing staff :
•Transferring the lying patient to the radio-transparent stretcher
•Lifting the patient lying on the floor
•Transferring the patient from the radio-transparent stretcher to the bed, the
shower trolley …
Transfers of patients with a stretcher should preferably be done by three people:
two for the implementation of the stretcher and patient monitoring, one for
handling the lift.
Make sure before any transfer that you have enough space on both sides of bed,
shower trolley, to pass half stretcher
Place a pillow under the patient's head to protect the head against possible shocks
during transfers.
During the operations done around the patient, make sure that you do not to
damage any cables or hanging, tube, connected devices that the patient could be
fitted
Transfers of patients with a stretcher must be performed by personnel trained in the
handling and transfer of patients with reduced mobility: lateralization, patient
transfer must be made in accordance with safety rules and specific ergonomics.
Stretchers should be used in accordance with a direction: balancing the stretcher
and therefore the patient safety are optimized when the stretcher is used properly.
The direction of use is very simple: a label clearly indicates the side "feet" of the
litter:

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 10 / 24
Supporting a lying patient
The patient lies on a bed, stretcher, shower trolley ... and must be transferred to another
medium
Depending on the patient's condition and if he/she can be put in lateral recumbency, it is
also possible to lateralize with a hospital sheet following good practices of gestures and
postures.
1- If the lateralization is possible (a medical advice is mandatory) lateralize the patient:
position a patient's leg above the other, the corresponding arm over the other arm, then
rotate him/her.
2- Slide the two half-stretcher under the patient, one after the other and lock the two parts
together.
To facilitate the transfer phase, the first caregiver maintains the patient supine while the
other slips the half-stretcher under him/her.
3- Lay the patient on his back and have a pillow under his head for a better comfort.
The patient is ready to be transferred.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 11 / 24
It is mandatory to refer to the user manual of the hoist for precautions of use
during transfer operations.
4- Bring the hoist near to the patient, and center the spreader bar above the patient (see
above). Move the spreader bar down to a distance sufficient so you can hang the loops.
Attach the four loops to the spread bar like shown above.
5- Slowly lift the patient a few inches making sure that the patient is properly installed in the
stretcher and that the straps are properly taken into the hooks of the spreader bar, and
tense.
6- The patient can now be transferred

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 12 / 24
Lifting a patient lying on the ground
The patient has fallen down on the floor, and must be transferred to a bed or stretcher
1- Put the patient on the back if his position is different and have a pillow under his head to
ensure its comfort during the transfer.
2- Slide a half of the stretcher under the patient, and if necessary lateralize him/her.
Make sure before the transfer that you have enough space around the patient, to
pass half stretchers and maneuver the hoist.
Because in this case the patient has fallen , and may have been hurt, and specially
if the patient is unconscious, have always the patient examined by a physician or a
first aid worker before attempt to move the patient.
In some cases, caregivers will not be able to lift the patient: trained first aid
workers will have to intervene with specialized equipment.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 13 / 24
3- Slide the other half of the stretcher under the patient until it reaches the first half.
The second caregiver may maintain the patient in a lateral position so the assembly of the
stretcher is easier.
Lock the stretcher
Bring back to patient to a lying position

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 14 / 24
In the case of use of a mobile hoist
Always refer to the user manual of the hoist for safety measures to be taken.
1- Move the hoist above the patient :
2- Hang two loops of the stretcher to the spreader bar :
3- Lift the stretcher at the head of the patient so as to pass the leg of the hoist under the
stretcher. Verify the proper arrangement of straps in the spreader bar hooks. Perform a
rotation of the hoist as soon as the legs can be slid under the stretcher.

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 15 / 24
4- Rotate the hoist until the stretcher can be rested on the legs of the hoist.
5- If necessary correct the position of the stretcher on the legs of the hoist, then hang the two
remaining loops to the spreader bar.
7- Slowly lift the patient a few inches making sure that the patient is properly installed in the
stretcher and that the straps are properly taken into the hooks of the spreader bar, and
tense.
8- The patient can now be transferred

DOMA031EN v1_06-2014– Radio-transparent stretchers user manual Page 16 / 24
Transferring the patient from the radio-transparent stretcher
Once the patient has been transferred, it is necessary to lay it down to the support: bed,
shower trolley, examination table ….
Prior to the transfer, make sure:
- That the bed, the shower trolley ... has enough space under its base to
allow manipulation of the hoist without any risk.
- That you have enough space around the patient to manipulate half-
stretchers once the patient has been laid on the support
- That the brakes the shower trolley , bed ... are blocked so that the support
is stable and there is no risk of inadvertent movement
1- Bring the hoist above the support and lift down the arm until the stretcher lies on the
support and the loops are loose.
Make sure that the patient is in a proper position.
2- Remove the loops straps of the spreader bar, exit the hoist from the room in order to have
more freedom of movement around the patient.
3- Unlock the stretcher
4- Break off the two halves of the stretcher. Putting the patient in a supine position, you will
find it easier to remove the half-stretchers one after the other by placing your hands at the
openings for better grip, and sliding half-stretchers.
If it is necessary lateralize the patient alternately on both sides to remove the half-stretchers,
then turn the patient on the back or in any position that secured his physiological condition
and / or devices, probes ... he could be equipped
