About GPSteer
GPSteer is a GPS-driven automatic steering solution for your
farming needs. Simplify and improve driving by automatically
steering the vehicle along straight or curved passes. Growers and
custom applicators working in broad-acre applications will quickly
realize cost savings and reductions in workload.
GPSteer is a small customized valve block that fits nearly all
hydraulically steered vehicles - this mechanism automatically steers
your vehicle according to GPS data it receives from the controller.
Figure 1-1. GPSteer CPU and Controller.
With safety and user-control top-of-mind, GPSteer allows you to
manually steer the vehicle even while GPSteer is engaged and the
system automatically disengages GPSteer hydraulics when power is
off or in case of system failure.
GPSteer includes:
• GPSteer valve block hydraulic components
• GPSteer CPU

• LiteStar II controller (optional - if you already have LiteStar II
system, you don't need the controller) and GPSteer software
• Receiver and receiver antenna (optional, if you already have a
GPS receiver)
Features & Benefits
•Easy installation - GPSteer can be quickly and easily
installed by interfacing our customized valve block into
existing steering lines. This block is compatible with nearly all
farm vehicles and is automatically calibrated and adjusted upon
connection.
•Reduce operator workload - finish your job in optimum
time and reduce driver fatigue with automatic steering.
•Remain confident in safety features - safety features
provide visible and audible warnings in addition to disengaging
the automated steering system when necessary. Operates in
speeds ranging from 1 - 20 m.p.h..
•Improve driving accuracy - automatically drive the vehicle
in straight, consistent passes that minimize skips and overlaps,
maximize the field's productive area, lower input costs, and
reduce the time in the field.
•Compatible with the LiteStar II controller and any of
our receivers - GPSteer software operates out of the
LiteStar II controller, providing the GPS data to GPSteer.
• Compatible with most tractors and self-propelled
sprayers

Selecting the Correct Installation for Your Hydraulic
Steering System
Your hydraulic steering system may be one of two types: closed
center or open center.
A closed-center hydraulic steering system allows the tractor to
handle pressure build-up in the steering system. This means that
there can be blockages in the line or changes in pressure and the
pump will compensate.
In this system, oil does not run through the steering unit when the
steering is in neutral (not turned to the left or right). A Load Sense
line and a pressure-compensated pump compensate for any
resulting pressure inconsistencies.
This type of system is most commonly found on medium to large
tractors and sprayers. Closed-center systems typically offer an
advantage for systems that come with multiple hydraulic system
options. They allow you to tie into the hydraulic system without
worrying about pressure inconsistencies.
An open-center hydraulic system does not have a pressure
compensated pump and valve to handle pressure inconsistencies.
In this system, oil runs through the steering unit when the steering
is in neutral. This results in pressure being constant with no need
for a pressure compensation mechanism.
This type of system is most commonly found on small to medium
sized tractors and sprayers. Open-center systems typically offer an
advantage because they are highly efficient and cost effective.

However, if you do need to tie into an open-center hydraulic
system, it is extremely important to also add a flow-regulating
mechanism to avoid damage to your vehicle.
GPSteer may be integrated into both closed-center and open-
center systems. Each installation is unique, to meet the pressure-
regulating needs of each type of system.
A complete parts list and installation instructions are provided in
“Chapter 2: Connecting Your Hydraulic Components” for both
closed- and open-center systems.

Additional Installation Considerations
There are many makes and models of agricultural vehicles. The
additional installation considerations described below may or may
not apply to your particular vehicle. Detailed instructions are
included in “Chapter 2: Connecting the Hydraulics” if these items
do apply.
•Reactionary steering - it is important to know if your
vehicle has reactionary steering. If your vehicle has
reactionary steering, the steering wheel turns with the wheels,
similar to an ordinary automobile. If you have non-
reactionary steering, the steering wheel does not turn when
the wheels turn.
If you do have reactionary steering, you must install Counter-
Balance Valve (optional accessory available from Satloc) in
between the steering cylinders and the steering unit. The
Counter Balance Valve blocks oil from flowing back into the
steering unit from the steering cylinders.
•Pressure regulation - if the steering pressure is significantly
less than the pressure delivered from the pump, you may need
to install a Pressure Reducing Valve (optional accessory
available through Satloc). For instance, the John Deere 55
series tractor uses a closed circuit steering system that
operates with significantly less pressure than what is available
from the main pump.
•Oil cooler - if the temperature in the hydraulic oil increases
beyond an appropriate range, an in-line oil cooler should be
installed (optional accessory available through Satloc).
•Higher-flow valve cartridges - if flow is insufficient, the
cartridge in the valve block can be replaced with a higher flow
valve (optional accessory available through Satloc).

Overview
There are two steps to installing GPSteer - installing the necessary
hydraulic connections for your tractor model (the hydraulic
connections required depend on whether you have an open- or
closed-center hydraulic system) and installing the basic GPSteer
components. See “Chapter 1: Getting Started, Selecting the Correct
Installation for Your Hydraulic System” for help with identifying
whether you have an open- or closed-center system.
After you have installed GPSteer, you must perform a valve test to
verify that the installation is correct before proceeding to
calibration.

Closed-Center System
Before You Begin
The parts you need to connect to your hydraulic system depend
on whether you are installing GPSteer in an open- or closed-
center hydraulic system.
For the closed-center system, you will need the following parts.
Please review the list carefully to make sure you have all of the
necessary components before beginning the installation.
Closed-Center Parts List
The following tables list parts included with your system, parts you
need to supply, and optional accessories available through Satloc.
Note: The fittings supplied in the Fittings Kit are for a typical
installation. However, you may need to supply additional fittings
depending on your vehicle.
