Before You Install Your Pump
Pre-installation
1. Long runs and many fittings increase friction and re-
duce flow. Locate pump as close to well as possible.
Keep pipe straight and angled up to pump. Use as few
elbows and fittings as possible. Support weight of pipe.
2. Be sure well is clear of sand, dirt and scale which will
plug pump and void warranty.
3. Protect pump and piping from freezing. Freezing will
split pipe, damage pump and void warranty. Check
locally for frost protection requirements (usually pipe
must be 12" (30.5 cm) below frost line and pump must
be insulated).
4. Be sure pipes and foot valve are clean and in good
shape. Leaking foot valve due to dirt or scale may
allow pump to lose prime and cause pump failure.
5. No air pockets in suction pipe.
6. No air leaks in suction pipe. A pump cannot pump air.
Use Teflon tape or Plasto-Joint Stik to seal pipe joints.
Do not use pipe joint compound. (Fig. 1).
NOTICE: A leak in suction may not drip but still draw
in air. Jet pumps will not pump or prime until all joints
are sealed properly.
7. Match pump to well. Shallow well is 20' (6 M) or less
to water with pump running. (Fig. 2)
NOTICE: Flow in to well must at least equal flow out
through pump! See Performance Chart.
8. Unions installed near pump and well will aid in ser-
vicing. Leave room to use wrenches.
9. Pump body may explode if used as
booster pump unless relief valve capable of passing
full pump flow at 75 PSI is installed.
10. Be sure to prime pump before starting. Water acts as
lubricant. Starting without water will cause internal
damage and void warranty.
Pump/Piping Installation
Pump Installation
NOTICE: Use Teflon tape supplied with pump for making
all threaded connections to pump itself. Do not use pipe
joint compounds on pump (may cause reaction with
plastic in pump components.)
1. Bolt pump to solid, level foundation.
2. Support all piping connected to pump to prevent pump
breakage.
3. Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 layers of Teflon tape clockwise (as you
face end of pipe) on all male threads being attached to
pump.
4. Tighten joints hand tight plus 1-1/2 turns. Do not
overtighten. This may cause damage to pump and void
warranty.
NOTICE: Install pump as close to well head as possible.
Long piping runs and many fittings create friction and
reduce flow.
NOTICE: For long horizontal pipe runs, install priming tee
between check valve and well head. For driven point
installations where horizontal piping is more than 25 feet
(7.6M) long, install check valve. Be sure check valve flow
arrow points toward pump.
See “Well Pipe Installation” for more information
Pressure Tank Connection
Pressure Tank
Hazardous pressure. To avoid tank blowup,
install relief valve capable of passing full system flow at
75 PSI.
PRESSURE TANK provides reservoir of water under pres-
sure and maintains cushion of air pressure to prevent pipe
hammering and possible damage to plumbing
components. When water is drawn off through house
fixtures, pressure in tank is lowered and pressure switch
starts pump.
Standard Tank Connection
When standard tank is used, air volume control (AVC) adds
air to the tank when needed. To connect AVC to pump,
remove 1/8" pipe plug from pump body near suction port
(Fig. 3). Thread 1/8" compression fitting into tapped hole.
Cut tubing to length to reach AVC; assemble to fitting on
pump and to AVC on tank. See installation instructions
provided with tank and AVC for details.
Pre-Charged Tank Connection
When pre-charged tank is used, no AVC is necessary. Pre-
charged tank contains factory provided air charge. See tank
owner’s manual for instructions on checking tank air
charge. An annual check on tank charge is recommended
to prevent excessive running of pump.

Well Pipe Installation
NOTICE: Use installation method which matches your
well type.
Cased Well/Dug Well Installation
1. Inspect foot valve to be sure it works freely. Inspect
strainer to be sure it is clean.
2. Connect foot valve and strainer to first length of suction
pipe and lower pipe into well. Add sections of pipe as
needed, using teflon tape on male threads. Be sure all
suction pipe is leakproof or pump will lose prime and
fail to pump. Install foot valve 10 - 20 ft. (3-6M) below
lowest level to which water will drop while pump is
operating (pumping water level). Contact your local
well driller for more information.
3. To prevent sand and sediment from entering pumping
system, foot valve/strainer should be at least 5 ft.
(1.5M) above bottom of well.
4. When proper depth is reached, install sanitary well seal
over pipe and in well casing. Tighten the bolts to seal
casing.
5. When using foot valve, use priming tee and plug.
Driven Point Installation
1. Connect suction pipe to drive point. Keep horizontal
pipe run short. Use Teflon tape on male pipe threads.
2. Install check valve near the well point. Check valve
flow arrow must point toward pump.
Lake Installation
Same as cased well except as follows:
1. Protect end of suction pipe, foot valve and strainer with
screening.
2. Install suction pipe far enough below lake level so end
of pipe will be submerged at all times. End of suction
pipe must be off lake bottom to keep sand and
sediment from entering system, causing pump failure.
Electrical Ground motor before

To avoid dangerous or
fatal electrical shock,
turn OFF power to motor
before working on electrical
connections.
Supply voltage must be
within ±10% of name-
plate voltage. Incorrect volt-
age can cause fire or seriously
damage motor and voids
warranty. If in doubt consult a licensed electrician.
Use wire size specified in Wiring Chart. If possible,
connect pump to a separate branch circuit with no
other appliances on it.
Wiring
1. Install, ground, wire and maintain pump in accordance
with your local electrical code and all other
codes/ordinances that apply. Consult your local
building inspector for local code information.
2. Ground pump permanently using wire of size and type
specified by approved local or national codes.
Risk of explosion. Do not ground to gas
supply line.
3. Connect ground wire first. Connect to ground first, then
to green grounding terminal provided on pressure
switch identified as GRD. Ground connection MUST
be made to this terminal. Do not connect motor to
electrical power supply until unit is permanently
grounded; otherwise serious or fatal electrical shock
hazard may be caused.
4. For best ground connection, connect to grounded lead
in service panel or to metal underground water pipe or
well casing at least 10 ft. (3 M) long. If plastic pipe or
insulated fittings are used, run ground wire directly to
metal well casing or use ground electrode furnished by
the power company.
To Connect Pressure Switch: (see Fig. 5)
Make sure power to pump has been disconnected at
service panel before connecting pressure switch.
1. Remove switch cover.
2. Connect green ground wire to terminal in base or side
of switch marked GROUND, GRD, or .There may
be two ground terminals; connect to either one.
3. Connect power supply leads to switch terminals
marked LINE, L, or L1/L2.
4. Motor leads should be connected to switch terminals
marked LOAD, MOTOR, M or M1/M2. If not, connect
them to switch terminals.

5. Make sure that either:
A. Motor frame is connected to pressure switch by a
solid metal connection, or
B. Motor ground wire is connected to ground terminal
in switch.
Risk of electric shock. Do not operate pump unless
motor and pressure switch are connected to each
other by a solid metal connection and are grounded.
6. Replace pressure switch cover.
Pump is now wired for operation.
Operation
Priming the pump
Explosion Hazard. Do not run pump with
discharge shut off. Pump can boil water, causing steam
burns when opening pump or blowing up pump body or
can cause internal (seal) damage to pump.
NEVER run pump dry. Running pump with-
out water may overheat pump, damaging internal parts
and causing burns if handled. To prevent damage, fill
pump with water before starting.
1. Remove priming plug.
a. Fill pump and suction pipe with water. (Fig. 6)
b. Replace priming plug, using Teflon tape on plug
thread; tighten plug.
NOTICE: If priming tee and plug have been
provided for long horizontal run, be sure to fill
suction pipe through this tee and replace plug
(REMEMBER TO TEFLON TAPE THE PLUG).
c. Open faucet to allow air to escape during prime,
close faucet quickly when unit primes.
2. Start pump and run two minutes or less. Unit should
pump water. If not, stop pump and repeat steps under
No. 1. On first use of pump, it may be necessary to
reprime unit 2-3 times before all air is out of suction pipe.
3. If, after priming pump several times and no water is
pumped, make sure that:
a.Suction pipe end is in water.
b.Suction pipe has no air leaks.
c.Pump is not trying to lift water more than 20 ft. (6 M).
d.Pump is not air locked: Pump suction port should be
highest point in suction pipe; no sags in suction pipe
(run it straight and angled slightly upward from well
head to pump).
e.Piping is clean and in good condition.
NOTICE: As long as foot valve and check valve
function correctly and suction pipe does not develop
leaks, pump should not need repriming in normal
service.

NOTICENOTICE
If you are installing your pump on an
older Captive-Air tank with small pump
mounting bracket, use a package N198-3
adapter bracket for a firmer installation.
Package includes adapter and all required
hardware. Bolt adapter to pump mounting
bracket and pump to adapter bracket with
carriage bolts provided in kit.
This pump may have a spacer shim inserted
inside the impeller hub to assure correct
running clearance between impeller and
seal plate (see illustration at left).
This shim may stick inside impeller hub
when impeller is removed.
When removing impeller, look for this
shim; if it is used, make sure to save it and
replace it when reassembling pump.

Well is gaseous. Change installation as described in manual.
Intermittent over-pumping of well. Lower foot valve if possible, otherwise restrict pump discharge.

TROUBLESHOOTING CHART
Capacitor voltage may be hazardous. To discharge capacitor,
hold insulated handle screwdriver BY THE HANDLE and short
capacitor terminals together. Do not touch metal screwdriver blade or capacitor
terminals. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
