ASTA CANTILEVER UMBRELLA
ASTA WINDRATING by FACET Consulting Engineers
400CM OCTAGONAL 60KPH
350CM SQUARE 60KPH
It is vital to note this rating only applies to your umbrella in the absolutely horizontal, non-tilted position and
that installation is conducted as specified in this instruction sheet. Tilting the umbrella greatly increases its
wind loading and the likelihood of wind damage, even with relatively low wind speeds.
The rating also assumes a constant wind without variable gusts and updrafts - it is entirely possible that
gusting and rapidly veering winds could cause resonance that damages the frame at less than the rated
wind speed.
It is recommended that your Asta be closed and the protective cover placed on during any extended
period of non use. Protected in this way your Asta Cantilever Umbrella should provide shade and trouble-
free service for many years.
WARRANTIES
Shelta warrants Asta free of factory faults for a period of:
Frame - 2 Years; Sunbrella Fabric - 5 years
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
This umbrella is not a permanent shade structure and must be lowered when unattended or in windy
conditions. Excessive wind puts stress on the frame, which can cause damage to the umbrella and danger
to people. This umbrella is not recommended for exposed environments such as high balconies or roof
tops. Do not install on sloping or soft ground. Please carefully read the following instructions; if in doubt,
consult a qualified trades-person. Only use recommended Shelta bases or anchoring systems.

Anchoring methods
1. Onground Anchoring - for securing to a completely level, quality concrete
surface, at least 12cm thick and preferably steel reinforced.
a) Use the 4 holes in the Stub Mast flange (#12) as a template to mark the
concrete surface for drilling 4 holes.
b) Use a 10mm masonry drill bit and drill the holes to 80mm deep.
c) If necessary insert galvanized washers under the flange to ensure the Stub
Mast is vertical.
d) Secure the Stub Mast with 4 galvanized or stainless steel concrete fasteners,
10mm diameter and at least 75mm long, eg Ramset Dynabolt 10080HSS,
Dynabolt 10075GH, Ankascrew AS10075WGM or Powers Blue-Tip
BTCSK10075.
2. Inground Base Anchoring - for securing to other surfaces. Requires the
purchase of the optional Shelta Inground Base and approximately 7 x 20kg bags of
Post Hole Concrete Mix from your local hardware.
a) Attach the Stub Mast (#12) to the Inground base flange using 4 countersunk
screws supplied with the Inground Base.
b) Dig a hole of 30cm diameter and 60 to 80cm deep in the required location.
c) Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
d) While holding the base and stem in position, fill the hole with concrete.
e) Use a spirit level to ensure the Stub Mast is vertical.
f) Allow the concrete to cure for at least 4 days.
3. Timber Decks - to mount the umbrella on a deck, we recommend that you
consult a builder or engineer to ensure that the Stub Mast is properly connected to a
secure structure (eg a pair of 25cm joists).
4 Concrete Fasteners
(not provided)
4 Countersunk Screws
(supplied with base)
Installing Your Asta
Check that the carton includes the main umbrella assembly, the stub mast, the crank handle and the protective
cover.
Read these instructions carefully and if still in doubt, please engage the services of a qualified builder or tradesman.
When considering a location for your Asta, remember to allow adequate clearance for the available 360° rotation
around the anchor point - approximately 4.3 metres radius from the mast is required.

Opening Asta
Insert Opening / Closing Crank (#9) into the appropriate hole near
the bottom of the mast. Rotate the Crank clockwise with the right
hand. As the umbrella opens, move the Runner (#7) up the mast
with the left hand. At the desired angle of tilt, lock the Tilt Lock
Knob (#6) by rotating clockwise.
Important:
1. If on the initial rotation of the Crank there is resistance to
opening, do not force. Gently pull the umbrella rib ends
apart and outwards to ensure they are not tangled, then
continue winding the crank.
2. Do not overwind the crank handle - stop winding when
the canopy is fully open.
3. The umbrella may be rotated while open but be careful if
the wind is tending to turn or lift the canopy.
4. In windy conditions, check the umbrella for excess
movement and if necessary, adjust the slide so that the
canopy is horizontal.
Closing Asta
Loosen the Tilt Lock Knob (#6) and slowly lower the runner while
simultaneously turning the Crank (#9) anti-clockwise with the right
hand.
When the umbrella is closed against the mast, secure the Velcro tie
around the umbrella and mast to hold it closed.
OPENING CLOSING
Additional Instructions
1. Protective Sleeve. When not in use, tie the fabric band
around the umbrella and side-post, then slip the unzipped
Protective Sleeve over the top of the umbrella.
2. Optional LED light. The central runner features a drop-
down spigot to which the Shelta ’Flying Saucer’ LED light
may be attached.
3. Safety. Never leave the umbrella unattended while open.
Weather conditions can change without warning and strong
gusts of wind may cause the umbrella to fall over or to break
away from the mounting.
4. Sun Protection. The fabric on this umbrella is rated at
UPF50+ and provides excellent protection. However on high
UV days there can be significant reflected sunlight from
sources such as windows and water for which Shelta
recommends the use of protective clothing and sunscreen.
Erecting the umbrella
1. Remove the umbrella / mast assembly from the box. Ensure
the Rotate Lock Pin (#10) is removed from the mast.
2. A two person lift is necessary to place the lower end of the
umbrella Mast (#8) over the end of the newly installed Stub
Mast (#12). When the mast is vertical, gently lower it down
the length of the stub mast.
3. Use the Mast Rotate Handle (#11) to rotate the umbrella to
the required rotate position.
4. Fix in this position by inserting the Rotate Lock Pin (#10)
through one of the 12 holes at the top of the Stub Mast.
Ensure that the Rotate Lock Pin is held by the locking device
on the side of the Mast.

To ensure a long life for your Asta umbrella:
Close the umbrella and cover with the Protective Sleeve between uses.
Store in a dry, shaded location if not used for long periods.
The umbrella should be hosed regularly with fresh water if exposed to salt spray or pollution.
Soiling of the canopy can be minimised by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric or
spot cleaning soon after stains occur. Fabrics may be treated with a fabric protector such as ‘Scotchguard’ for
additional protection.
Do not close or store the umbrella when wet; if it is necessary to close a wet umbrella in stormy weather, re-
member to open and dry the canopy as soon as weather conditions allow.
Every 6 months spray the base plate with WD40 or deoderised fish-oil.
Regularly check that the base plate is properly secured.
