To ensure safe operation the three-pin plug supplied
must be inserted only into a standard three-pin power
point which is effectively earthed through the normal
household wiring. Extension cords used with the
equipment must be three-core and be correctly
wired to provide connection to earth. Wrongly wired
extension cords are a major cause of fatalities. The fact
that the equipment operates satisfactorily does not
imply that the power point is earthed and that the
installation is completely safe. For your safety, if in any
doubt about the effective earthing of the power point,
consult a qualified electrician.

Units shipped to countries other than the above coun-
tries are equipped with an AC voltage selector switch
on the rear panel. Refer to the following paragraph for
the proper setting of this switch.
AC VOLTAGE SELECTION
This unit operates on 110-120 V AC. The AC voltage
selector switch Type A on the rear panel is set to the
voltage that prevails in the area to which the unit is
shipped. Before connecting the power cord to your
AC outlet, make sure that the setting position of this
switch matches your line voltage. If not, it must be set
to your voltage in accordance with the following direc-
tion

Rear Panel Connections .-
* Do not plug AC input cord into the AC outlet when making connections.
* Be sure to connect the white RCA plugs to the L(Left) jacks and the red RCA plugs to the R(Right) jacks when
making connections.
@ FM INDOOR ANTENNA .
Connect the supplied antenna to the FM antenna terminals, as shown in the Rear Panel Connection Diagram.
Change the position of the antenna until you get the best reception of your favorite stations.
@ FM OUTDOOR ANTENNA
A 75 Q outdoor FM antenna may be used to further improve the reception.
Disconnect the indoor antenna before replacing it with the outdoor one.
@ AM LOOP ANTENNA
Tune in your favorite AM station and position the loop antenna for best reception. Try other stations and find the
position that gives best overall reception. When this unit is mounted in a rack or placed on a shelf with insufficient
space behind, hang it on a wall in the direction which gives best reception.
NOTE : If noise is heard during AM reception, move LOOP for best reception.
To prevent undesired noise, AM LOOP ANTENNA should be located away from the DIGI-LINK cord over
12 inches (30 cm). .
AM LOOP ANTENNA SETTING
Stand and place it on a shelf
or hang it on a wall.
@ SYSTEM GROUND TERMINAL
To reduce hum to a minimum, connect the ground lead from your TURNTABLE to this terminal.

Connect these jacks to the output cords of a turntable with MM(Moving Magnet) type cartridge.

NOTE : The power consumption of the connected equipment should not exceed 100 watts.

Plug this cord into a wall AC outlet.

Front Panel Controls =
@ POWER BUTTON
Press this button to turn the power on. Press again to turn the power off, then the STANDBY/MUTE indicator lights
up and it switches to the standby mode.
When you press the INPUT FUNCTION SELECTOR buttons in the standby mode, the power is automatically
turned on and the program source is selected.
It can also be used as a system power button, if you connect the components to the switched AC outlet.
Sherwood DIGILINK II and IIT components wiu automatecall be switched on and off through the DIGILINK system
@ SPEAKER A, B SELECTOR SWITCHES
" These switches allow you to select various combinations of speakers as follows ;
* Press A or B switch to turn on either pair of speakers.
« Press A and B switches to turn on both pairs of speakers.
« When using headphones for private listening, press A and B switches again to turn off both pairs of speakers.
NOTE : If both speaker switches are pressed to turn on and only one pair of speakers is connected to the receiver, no
sound will be heard from the connected speakers. _
* The surround mode must be switched off to allow remote B speakers to produce all signals.
@ HEADPHONE JACK
Stereo headphones with a standard 1/4 inch plug can be plugged into this jack for private listening.
¢ The surround mode must be switched off for headphone listening
@ TUNING UP/DOWN BUTTONS
Press these buttons to change the selected AM or FM frequency.

Press this button to select stereo or mono mode when listening to FM broadcasts.

Press this button to select auto or manual tuning.
@ DIRECT BUTTON
Press this button to enter directly the frequency of the desired station.
MEMORY BUTTON
Press this button to memorize the desired station frequency.
@ 30 STATIONS RANDOM PRESET TUNING BUTTONS
Use these buttons to memorize or recall the preset number of the desired station frequency. When selecting a two
digit number, the second dight should be pressed within 2 seconds after the first digit has been pressed.
BASS CONTROL
Adjust the low frequency level with this control according to your taste and room acoustics.

Adjust the high frequency level with this control according to your taste and room acoustics.
¢ Be careful not to overdrive the speakers with the bass and treble control.

Adjust the sound volume balance between front left and right speakers with this control.

5 INPUT FUNCTION SELECTOR BUTTONS
Press the button to select the desired program source; PHONO, AM, FM, TAPEI, CD, VCR2 or VCR1.
TAPE 2 MONITOR BUTTON
When performing playback or recording on the cassette deck connected to the TAPE 2 MONITOR jacks, press this
button so that the TAPE 2 MONITOR indicator lights up.
When another input source is selected the TAPE2 MONITOR will automatically turn off.
@ RESET BUTTON
If normal operation is impossible because of external influences such as static electricity, etc. or even when function
buttons are pressed, turn the power off and press and hold down this button for more than 5 seconds.
When resetting or in power failure for more than 2 weeks, etc., because the programmed contents are all cleared, you
should
reprogram
all
presets.

STANDBY/MUTE INDICATOR
This indicator lights up when in the standby mode and flickers when the mute button is pressed.
REMOTE SENSOR
This receives the signals from the remote control unit.

[NORMAL]
Select this mode if you use a conventional center speaker. The bass sound of the center channel is reproduced from
the front speakers, because the small speaker cannot produce enough bass.
[WIDE}
Select

contains

subwoofer
the
bass
will
be
produced
only
by
the
center speaker, not the right and left speakers.
[PHANTOM]
Select this mode if you don't use a center speaker. The sound of the center channel is reproduced from the front

DIGI LINK Ill System Remote Controls
You can remotely control not only this receiver but also Sherwood compatible components bearing the DIGI LINK
III or IT logo.
For system remote control operation, first make DIGI LINK connection on back of units.

Press this button to scan the stations programmed in
memory.
NUMERIC BUTTONS
These buttons can be used to program or recall the
preset number for tuner and select or program tracks,
etc. for CD.
When selecting a two digit number, the second digit
should be pressed within 2 seconds after the first digit
has been pressed.
The number 0 will access preset number 30.

@ DELAY TIME BUTTON
When in the DOLBY PRO LOGIC mode, adjust the delay time with this button according to room size and
acoustics.

Press this button to temporarily silence the sound. Press again to resume the previous volume.

@ REAR LEVEL UP/DOWN BUTTONS
Use these buttons to adjust the sound level from the rear speakers relative to that from the front peas
@ CENTER LEVEL UP/DOWN BUTTONS
Use these buttons to adjust the sound level from the center speaker relative to that from the front speakers only when
in the normal or wide mode.
NOTE:
¢ Some functions for CD player, cassette deck or equalizer may not be available.
¢ For details about functions, refer to the operating instructions of each component.
@ SYSTEM REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION RANGE
¢ Use the system remote control unit within a range of about 8 meters (26 feet) and angles of up to 30 degrees
aiming at the remote sensor.

Surround Sound Effect
The RV-5050RDS is equipped with 2 types of surround processors (DOLBY PRO LOGIC and DOLBY 3 STEREO)
which provide a sense of presence and expansion and let you enjoy surround sound in your home.
Hi SURROUND PROCESSORS
* DOLBY PRO LOGIC SURROUND
The RV-5050RDS incorporates the Dolby Pro Logic Surround Decoder which has the same functions for playback
as movie theaters and gives a theaterlike experience in your listening room, naturally reproducing the audio sound
field. Use with the video sources bearing the " [{][Dousy surrounn J." mark.
* DOLBY 3 STEREO
Combining the rear speaker signal w ith that of the front speakers allows you to enjoy a regenerated sound field
which has comparatively more presence and a more expansive feeling from the front 3 channels (front L, front R and
center speakers) than that of ordinary stereo regeneration.
M@ DELAY TIME
In the DOLBY PRO LOGIC mode, the sound from the rear speakers should be delayed slightly, relative to that from
the front speakers. The optimum delay time will be different according to room size and acoustic properties. It is
recommended that you try different times to obtain the best sound field effect.

NOTES :
¢ If using a VCR to take full advantage of the SF modes, your VCR must be Hi-Fi Stereo VCR.
A mono VCR will not offer the SF effects.
¢ The surround modes will not operate correctly if the signal passes through a graphic equalizer.
When using the surround modes, set the graphic equalizer for flat response or its "through" or "off" settings, if you
have one in use.
Wi SPEAKER INSTALLATION
5 speaker configuration is the most effective configuration and requires front left and right speakers, two rear
speakers and a center speaker.
* Front speakers : Place the left and right front speakers 6~8 feet apart angled slightly toward the center listening
position,
¢ Center speaker : Place it directly atop or beneath the TV set.
* Rear speakers : Although a rear wall placement is acceptable, the best sound field is produced by placing the rear
speakers on side walls either in line with the setting position or slightly behind it. The speakers

@ ADJUSTING THE PARAMETERS
For optimum surround sound performance, adjust the parameters as desired.
1. Select the DOLBY PRO LOGIC or DOLBY 3 STEREO mode with the SURROUND MODE button.
2. Select the desired center mode with the CENTER MODE button.
3. Press the TEST TONE button to adjust the test tone volume level from each speaker.
4. Adjust the overall sound volume with the MASTER VOLUME control or buttons until the test tone volume level
is ata comfortable level. —
5. Press the CENTER LEVEL and REAR LEVEL UP/DOWN buttons until the volume level from each speaker is
approximately the same.
6. Press the TEST TONE button to turn the test tone off.
The test tone will continue unless the TEST TONE button is pressed to turn it off.
7. Adjust the delay time as desired with the DELAY TIME button.
NOTES :
¢ When in the PHANTOM mode, there is no sound from the center speaker.
¢ When in the DOLBY 3 STEREO mode, there is no sound from the rear speakers and the delay time needs not be
adjusted.

Radio Data System
RDS (Radio Data System) is a convenient system being used on FM in many countries. Inaudible digital codes are
transmitted in addition to the normal radio signal.
These codes contain various information as follows ;
1. Programme service name (PS) : This unit displays the station name instead of the frequency.
2. Lisf of Alternative Frequencies (AF) for the radio station being received.

Operations
Wi BASIC OPERATION
1. Set the MASTER VOLUME control to minimum.
2. Select the front speakers to be used with the SPEAKER A, B SELECTOR switches.
3, Press the POWER button to ON, then the display panel lights up.
4. Select the desired program source with the INPUT FUNCTION SELECTOR buttons, then the selected input
function appears in the display.
¢ When the VCR 2 is selected as a program source, select the VCR 2 on the front or the rear with the VCR 2
SELECTOR switch.
5. Operate the selected component for playback.
* When viewing and listening to video sources, the picture of the video source appears on the TV set and the sound
of that can be heard from the speakers.
¢ When playing back video or audio sources using sound field modes, refer to the "SOUND FIELD EFFECT".
* When the TAPE 2 MONITOR button is set to ON so that the TAPE 2 MONITOR indicator lights up, the selected
program source can not be heard from the speakers.
To listen to a program source other than TAPE 2 MONITOR, be sure to set the TAPE 2 MONITOR button to
OFF.
6. Adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level with the MASTER VOLUME control or UP/DOWN buttons.
7. Adjust the low frequency level and high frequency level with the BASS and TREBLE controls.
8. Adjust the sound volume balance between left and right front speakers with the BALANCE control.
9. When answering the telephone, etc., press the MUTE button on the system remote contro] unit to silence the
sound. Press again to resume the previous volume.
10. For private listening, insert a 1/4 inch plug of the headphone into the HEADPHONE jack.
M@ LISTENING TO BROADCASTS
You can use auto, direct, manual or preset tuning to select a radio station.
* When listening to FM broadcasts offering RDS services, see "RADIO DATA SYSTEM" on page 20.
a AUTO TUNING
If broadcast signals are strong and there is no interference, auto tuning is possible.
1. Press the FM or AM button to select the desired band.
2. Press the AUTO/MANUAL TUNING button to select the auto tuning mode.
¢ Each time this button is pressed, the tuning mode changes as follows.
Auto tuning mode : AUTO indicator lights up.
Manual tuning mode : AUTO indicator goes off.
3. Press the TUNING UP or DOWN button for more than | second, then the tuning will start automatically and stop
at a broadcast station frequency with sufficient signal strength and the TUNED indicator lights up.
4. If the station where tuning stops is not the one you want, press the TUNING UP or DOWN button again.
¢ If the end of the frequency range is reached during the auto or manual tuning, tuning will continue from the
opposite end.
