6. Operating the
appliance
6.1 Cooking
FIRE HAZARD! Before turning the
device on, place it on a level, sta-
ble, dry, heat-resistant surface.
DANGER! Risk of injury
through burning!
The surfaces of the device become
very hot during operation. While
the device is in operation, only
touch the control knob7, lid han-
dle2or device handles4.
1. Put the food in the cooking pot3.
2. Add at least 1 cup of liquid.
- Beans and hard vegetables such as
carrots or potatoes should always be
completely covered with water while
cooking.
- For best results, fill the cooking pot
about half full.
- The cooking pot3should contain at
least 1litre and at most 3litres of
food including the liquid.
3. Stand the cooking pot3in the base5.
4. Place the lid1on the cooking pot3.
5. Insert the plug into a suitable earthed
socket.
6. Turn the control knob7to your chosen
setting:
“HIGH”: For cooking at the highest tem-
perature
“LOW”: For cooking at the lowest tem-
perature
“AUTO”: To begin cooking at the high-
est temperature and thereafter at a low
temperature
7. The indicator light6will come on and
the appliance will begin heating up.
6.2 Checking whether the
food is cooked
• Avoid lifting the lid of the pot while
cooking is in progress. Every time you
open the lid adds to the necessary cook-
ing time.
• You should therefore check that the food
is cooked only towards the end of the
cooking time.
6.3 Ending operation
DANGER! Risk of injury
through burning!
The surfaces of the device become
very hot during operation. While
the device is in operation, only
touch the control knob7, lid han-
dle2or device handles4.
1. At the end of the cooking time, turn the
control knob7to “OFF”.
2. Remove the cooking pot3and the
cooked food.
While the cooker3 is in use, al-
ways use potholders or oven
gloves to grasp it.
3. Clean the appliance carefully after use
(see “Cleaning” on page 11).
6.4 Thermal cut-out
The appliance is protected against overheat-
ing. The appliance will switch off automati-
cally if at any time there is no more water in
the cooking pot3and the temperature has
become too high.
• If this happens, disconnect the appli-
ance from the power supply and allow
it to cool down.
• You can subsequently start the appli-
ance up again in the usual way.

7. Hints on cooking
with the slow cooker
Slow cooking or “gentle cooking” is one of
the healthiest ways of cooking food.
It is actually cooked below boiling point, but
for a number of hours. This means that noth-
ing can burn or become overcooked.
The food doesn’t boil vigorously, it “sim-
mers” slowly, so that flavours and spices
have time to develop to their full effect.
7.1 Suitable food for the
slow cooker
This slow cooker is particularly suitable for
meat, especially tougher cuts. The long
cooking time makes then as soft as butter.
Pulses such as beans, peas or lentils also
cook very well in the slow cooker.
Other hard vegetables such as potatoes,
carrots, kohlrabi, etc., are also well suited to
slow cooking.
In general we can say that slow cooking is
an excellent way of preparing stews, soups
and braised dishes.
7.2 Unsuitable food for the
slow cooker
The slow cooker is not suitable for searing or
browning. If any ingredients need to be
seared or browned, a separate pan should
be used.
Fish, pasta and dairy products are not suita-
ble for slow cooking, because they coagu-
late or disintegrate. Such delicate
ingredients are added towards the end of
the cooking period.
Red beans contain a particularly high level
of a hazardous protein substance that is de-
stroyed only by vigorous boiling. Red
beans should therefore always be pre-
cooked for ten minutes at a fast boil before
further cooking in the slow cooker.
Frozen foods should be thawed before cook-
ing. Temperatures in the slow cooker are too
low to be certain that frozen food will have
been completely cooked.
7.3 Tips and tricks
• Pulses should always be soaked in water
overnight. This greatly reduces the neces-
sary cooking time. The necessary cook-
ing time for dry pulses depends very
much on exactly how dry they are, and is
therefore difficult to estimate accurately.
• Always throw away the water in which
they were soaked, never use it for fur-
ther cooking.
• If you plan to mix beans with other veg-
etables such as carrots or potatoes, the
beans should be pre-cooked and then
left to stand overnight so that the cook-
ing times will be more nearly the same.
•Beansshould always be cooked at
“HIGH” in order to destroy their un-
wanted proteins and ensure that cook-
ing does not take too long.
• Beans and hard vegetables such as car-
rots or potatoes should always be com-
pletely covered with water while
cooking.
• Cut hard vegetables into regular, not
too large, pieces and always cook them
at the bottom of the cooking pot, be-
cause vegetables take rather longer to
cook than meat.
• You can prepare the ingredients the day
before, place them in the cooking pot
with the lid on and leave it in the refrig-
erator overnight, and then simply put it
into the slow cooker for cooking.
• To function properly the cooking pot
should always be at least half full.
• Many dishes involving stewed or stuffed
meat call for it to be seared before-
hand. This gives it a better appearance
and the browning also improves the fla-
vour.

9
GB
• Remove excess fat from the meat before
cooking it, because the low tempera-
tures in the slow cooker are not suffi-
cient to expel it.
• The slow cooker is not suitable for keep-
ing food hot or warming it up.
• For all poultry and large cuts of other
meat you should use a cooking ther-
mometer to check its core temperature
to ensure that it is properly cooked
through.
• If there is too much liquid in the cooking
pot3at the end of the cooking time, re-
move the lid1, turn the control knob7
to “HIGH” and evaporate the excess.
• When cooking soups and stews, the lev-
el of the liquid should always be at least
3cm below the rim of the cooking
pot3. This is to prevent it from spilling
when you lift the cooking pot3out of
the base5.
8. Cooking times
The times quoted in the tables are intended
as a guide. Actual cooking time depends
on:
• the size and freshness of the foods;
• the quantity in the cooking pot3;
• personal preference (al dente or soft).
NOTES:
• Ensure that all the pieces are about the
same size. Arrange smaller pieces on
top.
• Prepare the vegetables by cutting off
thick stalks and cutting large vegetables
into similar-sized pieces.
• Pierce sausages to stop them bursting.
• Poultry, in particular, needs to be
cooked right through to prevent the risk
of salmonella infection.
