ȐUsing the Tripod
When using a tripod, attach it to the tripod collar of
the lens, not to the tripod receptacle of the camera.
To change vertical/horizontal
position
Loosen the tripod collar ring-locking knob on
the tripod collar (1) and rotate the camera either
direction. The camera can be quickly switched
between vertical and horizontal positions while
maintaining stability when using a tripod.
• Gray dots (tripod collar ring indexes) are located at
90° intervals on the collar ring. Align a gray dot on
the tripod collar ring with the gray dot (tripod collar
ring index) on the lens to adjust the camera position
precisely (2).
• To suit your usage or preferences, you can turn on or
off the clicking sound that indicates positioning when
the tripod collar ring is rotated by 90°. Open the lid
on the tripod collar and turn the tripod collar ring-
clicking select switch with a tool, such as a flat-blade
screwdriver (3). Turn the switch to CLICK ON to turn on
the clicking sound. To turn off the clicking sound, turn
it to OFF.
• Tighten the tripod collar-locking knob firmly after the
camera position is set.
• The tripod collar ring may hit the camera body or
accessory when rotated, depending on the camera
or accessory model. For more information on
compatibility with cameras and accessories, visit the
web site of Sony for your area.
ȑAttaching the Lens Hood
It is recommended that you use a lens hood to
reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality.
Loosen the hood-locking knob on the lens
hood (1), and then gently slip the lens hood
over the front of the lens (2). Make sure that
the lens hood is properly attached, and then
tighten the hood-locking knob.
Attaching the front lens cap (See
illustration ȑ-a)
When you finished with photographing, follow
these steps to attach the front lens cap to the lens
hood.
1Turn the lens hood the other way around
and slip it over the lens, and then tighten
the hood-locking knob to secure the lens
hood to the lens.
2Align the hood-locking knob on the lens
hood with the slit of the front lens cap,
slide the lens hood all the way into the
front lens cap, and then fasten the flap
fastener.
ȒAttaching the lens strap
Before carrying around the lens, attach the lens
strap to the lens.
• To prevent the lens from dropping, be sure to attach
the lens strap properly so that the lens strap will not
come loose from the lens.
• When carrying around the camera with the lens
attached, be sure to grasp the lens strap on the lens,
not the one on the camera.
ȓStoring the lens in the case
1Keep the lens hood and the front lens
cap attached to the lens and place the
lens in the case while fitting the tripod
collar into the designated cavity near the
handle on the side of the case (1).
• Fit the hood-locking knob into the designated
cavity near the left latch on the case.
• When storing the lens strap, fold the lens strap
and then store it in the space underneath the
lens.
2Secure the lens with the belt (2).
3Close the case lid, push down the latches
on the case, and then lock the latches (3).
ȔFocusing
• The focus-mode switch of this lens does not function
with some camera models.
For further information on compatibility, visit the web
site of Sony in your area, or consult your dealer of
Sony or local authorized service facility of Sony.
To switch AF (auto focus)/MF
(manual focus)
The focus mode can be switched between AF and
MF on the lens.
For AF photography, both the camera and lens
should be set to AF. For MF photography, either or
both the camera or lens should be set to MF.
To set the focus mode on the lens
Slide the focus-mode switch to the
appropriate mode, AF or MF (1).
• Refer to the camera manuals to set the focus mode of
the camera.
• In MF, turn the focusing ring to adjust the focus (2)
while looking through the viewfinder, etc.
• With the full-time direct manual focus switch slid to
ON, the focus mode automatically switches to MF
when the focusing ring is rotated, regardless of the AF
mode setting and the focus adjustment (3).
To use a camera equipped with an AF/MF
control button
• By pressing the AF/MF control button during AF
operation, you can temporarily switch to MF.
• Pressing the AF/MF control button during MF
operation lets you temporarily switch to AF if the lens
is set to AF and the camera to MF.
ȕUsing SteadyShot
SteadyShot switch
• ON: Compensate for camera shake.
• OFF: Does not compensate for camera shake. We
recommend setting the SteadyShot switch to
OFF when shooting with a tripod.
SteadyShot mode switch
Set the SteadyShot switch to ON, and set the
SteadyShot mode switch.
• MODE1: Compensate for normal camera shake.
• MODE2: Compensate for camera shake when panning
moving subjects.
• MODE3: Compensate for camera shake to minimize
framing disturbances. This helps you to keep
up with fast and irregularly moving subjects
for photography, for example, in sports
games.
ȖUsing focus-hold buttons
• The focus-hold button of this lens does not function
with some camera models.
For further information on compatibility, visit the web
site of Sony in your area, or consult your dealer of
Sony or local authorized service facility of Sony.
This lens has 4 focus-hold buttons.
Press the focus-hold button in AF to cancel AF.
The focus is fixed and you can release the shutter
on the fixed focus. Release the focus-hold button
while pressing the shutter button halfway to start
AF again.
ȗSwitching Focus Range (AF range)
The focus-range limiter enables you to reduce the
AF time. This is useful when the subject distance is
definite.
Slide the focus-range limiter to select the
focus range.
• FULL: You can adjust the focus from the
minimum focusing distance to infinity.
• 15m - 4.5m: You can adjust the focus from 15 m
(49.3feet) to 4.5 m (14.8 feet).
• ∞ - 15m: You can adjust the focus from 15 m
(49.3feet) to infinity.
ȘPreset focusing
A specific subject distance can be stored and
recalled at any time. With the distance stored, this
focusing helps you to keep up with fast-moving
subjects for photography, for example, in sports
games.
To store the subject distance
1Slide the function ring select switch to
PRESET.
2Focus the lens to the distance to store.
• The focusing distance can be used in any focus
mode: AF, MF, or DMF.
3Press and hold the SET button to store
the subject distance.
• The stored subject distance is effective until a
new subject distance is stored.
• With the BEEP switch slid to ON, a beep sounds
every time the subject distance is stored.
• When you replace the drop-in filter, store
the subject distance all over again after the
replacement of the filter.
To recall the stored subject distance
1Slide the function ring select switch to
PRESET.
2Rotate the function ring either
counterclockwise or clockwise.
• The focus is adjusted to the stored subject
distance.
• With the BEEP switch slid to ON, a beep sounds
every time the subject distance is recalled.
șPower focusing
You can rack the focus at a consistent pace by
rotating the function ring. This focusing is useful for
smooth rack focusing, for example, during video
shooting.
1Slide the function ring select switch to
FUNCTION (1).
2Rotate the function ring (2).
• Rack focusing is performed at a consistent pace
in the same direction as the focusing ring is
rotated.
• Rack focus speeds can be selected in accordance
with rotation angles of the focusing ring.
• Power focusing is available in any focus mode:
AF, MF, or DMF.
ȚChanging the drop-in filters
The normal filter is attached to the lens at your
purchase.
The filter is a component of the optical lens system.
Be sure to attach either one of the filters before
photographing: the normal filter or the circular
polarizing filter.
To replace the drop-in filter
1Push down and turn the filter-holder
knob counterclockwise by 90° toward the
lens front (1).
• When the filter-holder knob is turned by 90°, the
flat cut-off surface of the knob faces toward the
lens front.
2Lift the filter-holder straight up (2).
3Replace the filter (3).
4Insert the filter-holder into the lens barrel
with the flat cut-off surface of the filter-
holder knob facing toward the lens front.
5Push down and turn the filter-holder
knob clockwise by 90° to lock the filter-
holder.
• When the filter-holder knob is locked, the index
bar on the flat cut-off surface of the filter-holder
knob is aligned with the index bar on the filter-
holder (4).
After replacement of the drop-in filter, make sure
that the filter-holder knob is properly locked.
To use the VF-DCPL1 Drop-in Circular
Polarizing Filter (not supplied)
(Seeillustration Ț-a)
1Adjust the focus precisely while looking
through the viewfinder, etc.
2Rotate the adjustment ring on the drop-
in circular polarizing filter-holder while
looking through the viewfinder, etc.,
to adjust the polarization degree for
photographing.
• The circular polarizing filter can reduce or
eliminate unwanted reflections (polarized light)
from nonmetallic surfaces of water, glass,
windows, shiny plastics, ceramics, paper, etc. It
also helps you get good contrast when taking
photos of blue sky.
• Generally, reflected light (polarization) should
be minimized in photography. However, you can
adjust the polarizing degree for the desired effect
as well.
• The amount of light reaching the image sensor
decreases. If your camera is set to manual
exposure mode and you are using a commercially
available exposure meter, or if your camera is
set to manual exposure mode and you are using
the Manual Flash Control function available on
some external flash units, adjust the exposure
compensation by opening the aperture by 1 to 2
stops to the + side.

not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages,
or
allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the
above
limitations or exclusions may not apply to
You.
This Limited Warranty gives
You
specific legal rights and
You
may have other rights which
vary
from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
For purchases made
in
the U.S.: Read the following Dispute Resolution/Arbitration provision carefully. It details Your rights and instructions should a
dispute related to the product arise.
What Happens If We Have A Dispute: Should a dispute
or
claim arise related to the product, Your purchase
and/or
use
of
the product, the
terms
of
this Limited
Warranty,
or
any service provided
under
the
terms
of
this Limited Warranty (including
any
repair
or
replacement) ("Dispute"), You
and
Sony agree
that
the Dispute
shall be resolved exclusively through binding arbitration.
YOU
UNDERSTAND AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT BY AGREEING TO ARBITRATION,
YOU
ARE
GIVING UP THE RIGHT TO LITIGATE (OR PARTICIPATE IN AS A PARTY OR CLASS MEMBER) IN ANY DISPUTES IN COURT.
You
also a9ree that ANY
DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCEEDING WILL ONLY CONSIDER YOUR INDIVIDUAL CLAIMS, AND BOTH PARTIES AGREE NOT TO HAVE ANY DISPUTE
HEARD AS A CLASS ACTION, REPRESENTATIVE ACTION, CONSOLIDATED ACTION, OR PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ACTION. Despite the
above,
You
have the right to litigate
any
Dispute
on
an
individual basis in small
claims
court
or
other
similar
court
of
limited jurisdictlon,
to
the extent the
amount
at
issue
does
not
exceed
$15
,000,
and
as
long
as
such
court
has
proper jurisdiction
and
all other requirements (including the
amount
in controversy)
are
satisfied.
Arbitration Instructions.
To
begin Arbitration, either
You
or
Sony must
make
a written
demand
to the
other
for arbitration.
The
Arbitration will take place before a single
arbitrator.
The
arbitration will
be
administered in keeping with the Expedited Procedures
of
the Commercial Arbitration Rules and the Supplementary Proceedings
for Consumer-Related disputes ("Rules")
of
the American Arbitration Association ("AAA"), when applicable
and
in effect when the claim is filed.
You
may
get
a copy
of
AAA's Rules by contacting
AAA
at (800)
778-7879
or visiting www.adr.org.
The
filing fees to begin
and
carry out arbitration will
be
shared between
You
and
Sony
,
but in no event shall Your fees
ever
exceed the
amount
allowable by the special rules for Consumers Disputes provided for
by
AAA, at which point
Sony
will cover
all additional administrative fees and expenses.
This
does not prohibit the Arbitrator from giving the winning party their fees
and
expenses
of
the arbitration when
appropriate pursuant to the Rules. Unless
You
and Sony agree differently, the arbitration will take place in the county
and
state
where
You
live, and applicable federal
or
state law shall govern the substance
of
any Dispute during the arbitration. However, the Federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. §
1,
et seq., will govern the arbitration itself
and not
any
state law on arbitration.
The
Arbitrator's decision will be binding and final, except for a limited right of appeal
under
the Federal Arbitration Act.
Opt-Out Instructions. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE BOUND BY THE BINDING ARBITRATION PROVISION, THEN: (1) You
must
notify
S9ny
in writing within
30
days
of
the
date that
You
purchased
the product; (2) Your written notification must be
mailed
to Sony Electronics Inc.,
16535
Via
Esprillo,
MZ
1105, San Diego
CA
92127, Attn: Legal Department;
AND
(3) Your written notification
must
include (a) Your
NAME,
(b) Your
ADDRESS,
(c) the DATE You purchased the product,
and
(d)
a clear
statement
that
"YOU
DO
NOT
WISH
TO RESOLVE
DISPUTES
WITH
ANY
SONY
ELECTRONICS
ENTITY
THROUGH
ARBITRATION
AND/OR
BE
BOUND
BY
THE
CLASS

Opting out of this dispute resolution procedure will not affect the coverage of the Limited Warranty in any
way,
and
You
will continue to enjoy the benefits of the Limited Warranty.
