Installing
l Allow adequateair circulation to
prevent internal heatbuildup.
* Do not place the unit on surfaces
(rugs, blankets, etc.) or near
materials (curtains, draperies) that
may block the ventilation slots.
* Do not install the unit nearheat
sourcessuchasradiators, or air
ducts, or in aplace subject to
direct sunlight, excessivedust,
mechanical vibration, or shock.
* Do not install the unit in an
inclined position. It is designedto
beoperatedin a horizontal
position only.
l Keep the unit anddiscs away from
equipment with strong magnets,
such asmicrowave ovens,or large
loudspeakers.
l Do not place heavy objects on the
unit.
l If the unit is brought directly from
acold to awarm location,
moisture may condenseinside the
Compact AV System andcause
damageto the lenses.When you
first install the unit, or when you
move it from acold to awarm
location, wait for about 30 minutes
before operating the unit.

Precautions
On safety
l Caution-The useof optical instruments with
this product will increaseeye hazard.
l Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet, unplug the system and haveit checked
by qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
On power sources
l If you arenot going to usethe system for a long
time, be sureto disconnect the system from the
wall outlet (mains). To disconnect the AC power
cord (mains lead), graspthe plug itself; never
pull the cord.
l Should theAC power cord (mains lead) needto
be changed,have it done at a qualified service
shop only.
On placement
l Place the system in alocation with adequate
ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the
system.
l Do not place the system on a soft surface such
asarug that might block the ventilation holes
on the bottom.
l Do not place the system in a location nearheat
sources,or in aplace subject to direct sunlight,
excessivedust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
l If the system is brought directly from a cold to a
warm location, or is placed in a very damp
room, moisture may condenseon the lenses
inside the system. Should this occur, the system
may not operateproperly. In this case,remove
the disc and leave the system turned on for
about half anhour until the moisture evaporates.
l When you move the system, take out any discs.
If you don’t, the disc may be damaged.
On adjusting volume
Do not turn up the volume while listening to a
section with very low level inputs or no audio
signals. If you do, the speakersmay be damaged
when apeak level section is played.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not useany type of abrasive pad,
scouring powder or solvent suchasalcohol or
benzine.
If you have any questions or problems concerning
your system, pleaseconsult your nearestSony
dealer.
On cleaning discs
Do not use acommercially available CDiDVD
cleaning disc. It may causea malfunction.
On your TV’s colour
If the speakersshould causetheTV screento have
colour irregularity, turn off the TV at once then
turn it on after 15to 30 minutes. If colour
irregularity should persist, place the speakers
further away from the set.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Caution: This systemis capableof holding a
still video image or on-screendisplay image on
your television screenindefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or on-screendisplay image
displayed on your TV for anextendedperiod of
time you risk permanentdamageto your
television screen.Projection televisions are
especially susceptibleto this.

l Title
The longest sections of apicture or a
music piece on aDVD; a movie, etc., for a
picture piece on a video software; or an
album, etc., for a music piece on an audio
software. Each title is assignedatitle
number enabling you to locate the title you
want.
l Chapter
Sections of apicture or a music piece that
are smaller than titles. A title is composed
of severalchapters. Each chapter is
assignedachapter number enabling you to
locate the chapter you want. Depending on
the disc, no chapters may be recorded.
l Track
Sections of apicture or a music piece on a
VIDEO CD, SACD, or CD. Each track is
assignedatrack number enabling you to
locate the track you want.

A number that divides atrack into sections
to easily locate the point you want on a
VIDEO CD, SACD, or CD. Depending on
the disc, no indexes may be recorded.

On aVIDEO CD with PBC functions
(page 34), the menu screens,moving
pictures and still pictures are divided into
sections called “scenes.” Each sceneis
assigneda scenenumber enabling you to
locate the sceneyou want.

This system conforms to Ver. 1.1andVer.
2.0 of VIDEO CD standards.You can enjoy
two kinds of playback depending on the disc
(Ver.2.0discs)

l A disc with paper or stickers on it.
l A disc that hasthe adhesive,cellophane
tape, or a sticker still left on it.
SomeCD-Rsor CD-RWscannotbeplayedon this
systemdependingupontherecordingquality or
physicalcondition of thedisc,or thecharacteristics
of therecordingdevice.
Furthermore,thedisc will not play if it hasnot been
correctly finalized. For moreinformation, seethe
operatinginstructionsfor therecordingdevice.
Some playback operations of DVDs and
VIDEO CDs may be intentionally setby
software producers. Since this system plays
DVDs andVIDEO CDs according to the
disc contents the software producers
designed, some playback features may not
be available. Also, refer to the instructions
supplied with the DVDs or VIDEO CDs.

Notesaboutthe Discs
On handling discs
l To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by
its edge.Do not touch the surface.
l Do not exposethe disc to direct sunlight or
heat sourcessuch ashot air ducts, or leave
it in a car parked in direct sunlight asthe
temperature may rise considerably inside
the car.
l After playing, store the disc in its case.
On cleaning
l Before playing, clean the disc with a
cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the centre out.
l Do not usesolvents such asbenzine,
thinner, commercially available cleaners,
or anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.

InsertingBatteriesintothe Remote
You can control the system using the supplied remote. Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by
matching the @ and 0 endson the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When
using the remote, point it at the remote sensor q on the system.
l Do not leave theremoteinanextremelyhotorhumidplace.
l Do not useanewbatterywithan old one.
l Do not dropanyforeignobjectintotheremotecasing,particularlywhenreplacingthebatteries.
l Do notexposetheremotesensortodirectlightfromthesunorlightingapparatus.Doingsomaycausea
malfunction.
l If youdonotusetheremoteforanextendedperiodof time,removethe batteries to avoidpossibledamagefrom
batteryleakageandcorrosion.
Step1:SpeakerSystemHookup
Connect the supplied speakersystem using the supplied speakercords by matching the colours
of the terminals to those of the cords. Do not connect any speakersother than those supplied
with this system.
To obtain the bestpossible surround sound, specify the speakerparameters(distance, level, etc.)
on page24.

The connector and the colour tube of the speakercords are the samecolour asthe label of the
terminals to be connected.

Short-circuiting of the speakersmay damagethe system. To prevent this, be sureto follow these
precautions when connecting the speakers.Make surethe bare wire of each speakercord does
not touch another speakerterminal or the bare wire of another speakercord.
Examples of bad conditions of the speaker cord
Exposed end speaker cord Exposed end cords are
is touching another speaker touching each other due to
terminal. sloppy removal of insulation.
After connecting all the components, speakers,andAC power cord (mains lead), output atest
tone to check that all the speakersare connected correctly. For details on outputting a test tone,
seepage 27.
If no sound is heard from a speakerwhile outputting a test tone, or atest tone is output from a
speakerother than the one currently displayed on the front panel display, the speakermay be
short-circuited. If this happens,check the speakerconnection again.
- Be sureto matchthespeakercord to theappropriateterminal on thecomponents:@ to 0, and0 to 0. If the
cordsarereversed,the soundwill bedistortedandwill lack bass.
l If you usefront speakerswith alowmaximum input rating, adjustthevolumecarefully to avoidexcessiveoutput
onthespeakers.

Connect the supplied AM/FM antennas for listening to the radio.
