1. Introduction
With VPL-CS5 and CX5 Sony introduces a new concept for ultra compact LCD
projectors. It's the mixture from unique design and features, performance and cost
that will give these products the competitive edge. Due to the increased flexibility the
VPL-CS5 and VPL-CX5 will close the gap between compact travel projectors and
small-scale installation products.
The aim is to set a new standard in the entry-level segment for SVGA and XGA ultra
compact projectors.
Focusing one the success we had since the introduction of VPL-CS1 and the
continued business made till VPL-CS4 it's now again time a for revolution.
The main differences and improvements can be found in the table below:

2. Product Concept
The VPL-CS5 and VPL-CX5 are based on various innovations in technology and
design in order to differentiate from competition and to give some added value to the
user.
Since the brightness of any projector is the most important specification the design
was focused on that. These two new products are the brightest models in their class
with a maximum light output of 2000 lumen for the VPL-CX5 and 1800 lumen for
the VPL-CS5. In case of VPL-CX5 this is a 100% brightness increase compared to
the previous model VPL-CX4.
The second innovation is the intelligent Auto Set-up that will reduce the necessary
actions in order to use a projector. This will help to reduce set-up faults by pressing
the wrong button or having poor picture quality due to a wrong alignment. With the
Intelligent Auto Set-up System the presenter can concentrate on the presentation and
there is no need to be worried about the set-up of the equipment.
These major innovations come bundled in a new and unconventional cabinet design.
The magic of the design lies in the simplicity. With only three frequently used keys
on the top panel not only the design becomes smarter also the use of this projector
becomes simplified and spectacular.
The VPL-CS5 and VPL-CX5 design is optimized of the mobile presentation use.
However due to the image flip function it is also possible to use these models in
other installation ways.
In addition the VPL-CX5 is equipped with the Sony Memory stick Slot for PC-Less
presentation. These new models are produced in Barcelona, Spain.
3. Models being phased out
The VPL-CS5 will be high specification and rich feature entrance model. It will
replace the VPL-CS4 as a direct successor. Because of the high Brightness of 1800
ANSI lumen it also will replace the VPL-PS10 that will be discontinued. Thus the
VPL-CS5 will be the only remaining SVGA model in the Line-up.
The VPL-CX5 will be the entrance XGA Model succeeding VPL-CX4, VPD-MX10
and VPL-CX11. The models from VPL-P to VPL-F -Series will cover the
applications that require additional features and higher specification.

4. Target customer Segment
The VPL-CS5 and VPL-CX5 are targeting the following applications:
Mobile Business Presentation
Shared Projector in Meeting rooms
for mobile and shared use in Schools and Education Institutions
Fixed Meeting Room installations
It should be noted that the products are designed for presentation purpose. For
installations with heavy usage (like 24hours operation) it's recommended not to use
these projectors. For such applications products likes the VPL-P and VPL-F are
better suited.

5. Product Features
5.1. High Brightness and compact size
Using new optical technologies in the VPL-CS5 and VPL-CX5 it is possible to
achieve a high brightness by keeping a compact size. The VPL-CX5 is rated at 2000
ANSI Lumen and the VPL-CS5 with 1800 ANSI lumen.
Using the newest generation of Sony super
high aperture 0.7inch pSi LCD Panels in
combination with a new 165W lamp and a
new designed optical engine called "Virtual
Light source System" the brightness could be
doubled compared to previous models.
The new 160W lamp with a newly designed
elliptical reflector and concave lens
improves the illumination of the LCD Panels
and create a higher efficiency.
5.2. New Innovative and smart design (design follows function)
With the VPL-CS5 and CX5 Sony
introduces a new mechanical design.
With the clean and straight forwards
design the new VPL-C-Series will
fit more easily into various
ambiences. The flat and book shape
design makes it easy to carry with
the supplied carry bag.
With only three buttons on the top
panel the operation of the projector
becomes very simple and does not
leave room for operation faults.
When the projector is not used the connection Panel can be covered with a flap.

5.3. Intelligent Auto Set-up
By adopting the Intelligent Auto Set-up function the projectors becomes very easy to
use. After connecting the Power and the Signal Cable the projector just needs to be
switched on. After pressing the Power Button the following functions will be
executed automatically.
Powered Lens Protector
after pressing the Power Button the Lens protector will automatically slight
away. There is no lens cap that might get lost and still the lens is protected the
projector is switched off.
Powered tilt angle adjuster
with the powered tilt Angle adjuster the high
of the projector can be adjusted very
smoothly and with high precision. This also
can be done via the remote. Since the
projector has a tilt angle Memory the last
position of the Tilt Angle is automatically
stored and used again once the projector is
powered up again.
Auto Keystone Correction
Once the Tilt angle is set the appropriate level of Keystone compensation is
adjusted automatically in order to eliminate the geometry distortion on the
projected image. The Auto Keystone correction will measure the angle of the
projector and adjust the keystone distortion accordingly.
Auto Input Search
using this function the projector will automatically search for a valid input Signal
on the input connectors. This will prevent that because of the wrong input
selection no Signal is displayed.
The Auto Input Search function can be disabled for situations where the input
Signal is known and fixed.
Smart APA
the Smart APA (Auto Pixel Alignment function) that is available to optimise
input signals coming from a computer will automatically adjust picture shift (for
horizontal and vertical direction), the horizontal Size and the dot phase. This will
result in a clear and crisp image reproduction. The Smart APA is triggered every
time the RGB Computer Input is selected or when the Computer Signal is
changed.
All of the above features will be triggered after the Power ON Button is pressed.

Due to the Intelligent Auto Set-up the possibility of faults during the operation of the
projector are dramatically reduced. The presenter can now focus on his presentation
rather then spending time to get the projector up and running.
5.4. Memory Stick Function (VPL-CX5 only)
With the VPL-CX5 Sony continues the use of
the Memory Stick for presentations. Using the
Sony Memory Stick™ storage media it's
possible to display presentations and pictures
from a digital camera without the need of a
computer.
In comparison to the VPL-CX3 and the VPD-
MX10 that also made use of the Memory Stick
feature the VPL-CX5 is much improved in
terms of performance.
Processing speed is much improved giving a quicker access to the pictures
The CX5 now supports MPEG1 movies that are recorded with a digital still
camera. The formats MPEG MOVIE, MPEG MOVIE AD, MPEG MOVIE EX,
MPEG MOVIE HQ, MPEG MOVIE CV and MPEG1 (equal to Video CD) are
supported. The Maximum resolution for MPEG Movies is 640x480.
Digital Camera Mode
since the Sony Digital Cameras store the image and movie files in different
folders the Digital Camera Mode was added for the image browser. This mode
will enable the user to see all pictures and movies from different folders in one
view.
5.5. Projector Station 4.1 (VPL-CX5 only)
In order to use the Memory Stick function a special
software is required. The VPL-CX5 is supplied with a
new Version of Projector Station. The Software will
convert Power Point Slide shows and Image files to the
right JPEG format needed for the Memory stick
presentation.
The main improvement points are as follows.
For the conversion of Power Point Presentations a
new Version of the Projector Station Software is
supplied. The Version 4.1 is compatible with
Windows 98, 98SE, ME, Windows 2000 and XP.

Power Point 2000 and 2002 are supported now.
Conversion of JPEG, BMP, TIFF, PNG and PSD (PhotoShop 3.0 file format) to
SVGA or XGA resolution JPEG files by simple drag and drop
The speed of the conversion is much improved compared to earlier Versions
The Memory Stick Slot in the Projector can be connected via USB cable to the
Computer to transfer files. The transfer speed over the USB cable is also much
improved.
With the Projector Station Software it is possible to control the VPL-CX5 via the
USB port. In addition the function key's on the remote can be assigned to start
specific presentations on the PC.
A Help and a "Wizard" function has been integrated into the Projector Station
Software to help new or inexperienced users.
5.6. Image Flip
The VPL-CS5 and CX5 are equipped with an image Flip Function in order to use it
in applications such as rear-projection or for ceiling mount. There will be an optional
ceiling mount bracket available. It should be noted that these Projectors are mainly
designed for Portable use. Even so an image flip function is available these products
are not suitable for installations like Museums, POI/POS, control rooms ect. that
require long running hours ( example more then 12 hours per day continuous
operation).
5.7. Other Features
5.7.1. New Remote Commander
With the supplied Remote Control RM-PJM12 a full projector
control is possible including digital Zoom and freeze. The
build in wireless mouse function is also available for VPL-
CS4. In addition a Picture Mute Button has been added.
The Digital Keystone button is used to bring up the digital
Keystone adjustment menu. If it is pressed again the tilt
adjustment menu will appear alternately.
The MS SLIDE (Memory Stick) button does only work with
VPL-CX5.

table the projector will recognize this as an "unknown" Signal. In case an "unknown"
Signal is detected the scan converter will calculate the vertical lines of the Signal and
apply the closest resolution from the following list.
640 x 480 480 lines
800 x 600 600 lines
1024 x 768 768 lines
1152 x 864* 864 lines
1280 x 960* 960 lines
1280 x 1024* 1024 lines
1400 x 1050* 1050 lines
*) VPL-CX5 only
In case the input resolution is different from the selected pre-set value the picture
might not be displayed properly and some pixels /lines might be missing or the signal
might be displayed in the wrong aspect ratio.
In case the resolution of the input signal is higher than the maximum specification of
the projector but still within the scan range some pixels will be missing and not
displayed.
The new SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) signal is difficult to detect since the timing is almost
the same as the SXGA VESA 60 Signal. In order to differentiate these signals the
active signal area (visible part of the signal) is analyzed. In case the displayed picture
contains some back boarders it can happen that the SXGA+ signal is judged as
SXGA signal.
In this case disconnect the input source by changing the input, switch the display to a
full screen picture (fe: desk top picture) and the re-apply the signal. This will allow
the scan converter to detect the signal correctly.

7.2.1. Virtual Light Source - System
In the right figure the current optical set-up is shown. The Lamp reflector is designed
to reflect the light beam in parallel towards the optical unit. With the new Virtual
Light Sources technology the reflector is elliptical and in combination with a
concave lens a smaller light beam is obtained.
In addition the required distance between the light source and the LCD Panel
becomes shorter with the virtual light system.
7.2.2. New 165W Lamp (LMP-C150)
Since the Virtual Light source concept
requires a high accuricy of the assembly for
the concave lens the new Lamp (LMP-
C150) conists of the eliptical lamp reflector
and the integrated concave lens.
The Lamp Life for this Lamp is 2000 hours
High Mode (165W) and 2500 hours in Low
Mode (150W).
The LMP-C150 directly connected to the
iternal cooling sytem once assebled in the
projector.
Conventional reflector (parabolic)
- Requires long distance between
the Lamp and the LCD Panel
- Some light generated by the
bulb is not used (lower
efficiency)
Elliptical reflector with concave lens
- Distance from Lamp to Panel
becomes shorter
- Additional collected light increases
the efficiency
- a virtual smaller light source is
obtained

7.2.3. Super High Aperture LCD Panels
With the new super high aperture (SHA) pSi LCD Panels the aperture ratio was
increased by 20%. This was achievd by reducing the size and the layout of the TFT
devices.
The Benefit from this is higher brightness and less heat on the panel. The new panels
also features Metal Mask and Aluminium Black Matrix technology for high cooling
effiency and good contrast.
7.3. Cooling System
The VPL-CS5 and CX5 does have a cooling system that takes the cool air from the
bottom of the unit. The Air exhaust is on the right side of the product just behind the
lamp that is the main heat source. The Prism Block and the Optical unit are cooled
with three low noise fans with a special air duct. The heat from the lamp is directly
moved out with two fans.

7.4. Connector Panels
7.4.1. VPL-CS4
The Input of VPL-CS4 offers one
Computer Input (Input A). Via the
menu this also can be switched to
Component.
The USB Connector is only used for
the Mouse Control function. There is
no possibility to control VPL-CS5
via the USB Connector and the
Projector Station Software.
The Composite Video and the S-Video inputs can be selected independently via the
remote commander. There is one Audio Input available.
In order to reduce the number of buttons on the top of units the menu control is now
based on a small joystick besides the Signal inputs.
7.4.2. VPL-CX5 (with Memory Stick Slot)
The VPL-CX5 has the same input
panel compared to VPL-CS5. The
only differences are the Memory
Stick slot including the Memory
Stick Access LED. When this
indicator is on the Memory Stick
should not be removed from the
projector to avoid a loss of data.
The USB Port of VPL-CX5 can be
used to control the projector via the
supplied Projector Station 4.1
Software.

7.6. Maintenance
7.6.1. Indicator LED's
The VPL-CS5 and CX5 are equipped with four indicators (LED's) to confirm the
projector status. These are the Power Indicator (surrounding the Power Button), the
TEMP/FAN and LAMP/COVER and the POWER SAVE indicator at the connector
panel.
Indicator Symptom Cause
ON/STANDBY red Projector is in standby
ON/STANDBY green Projector is switched on
ON/STANDBY green flashing Projector is in cool down, in the first 60 seconds the green
light flashes faster. In this time period it is not possible to
ignite the lamp since it is still to hot.
POWER
SAVING lights up The projector is in POWER SAVE mode. To return to
normal operation mode either apply a signal or press any
button on the remote or the projector
LAMP/COVER flashing The Lamp Cover or the Air Filter Cover is open
LAMP/COVER lights up The Lamp might be damaged or might have a too high
temperature to ignite (wait for cool-down)
TEMP/FAN flashing One of the internal ventilators is not working
TEMP/FAN lights up The internal temperature is unusually high, perhaps the
Air intake is blocked or the air-filter requires cleaning
LAMP/COVER
&
TEMP/FAN
lights up
together Some internal electrical failure occurred, Consult Prime
Support or qualified Sony personal.
7.6.2. Air filter
The Air filter protects the optical unit against dust. After about 300 hours the filter
might get contaminated with dust. In that case the filter needs to be cleaned.
If the filter is not cleaned the airflow in the projector is not working efficient any
longer. This might cause that the internal temperature will rise above a normal level.
If this should exceed a maximum level the projector will shut down with the
TEM/FAN LED flashing. Even so the projector is shut down it is possible that
electrical and optical parts might be damaged because of a too high temperature.
