Precautions
•Operate the set only on 120 V AC, 60 Hz.
•The nameplate indicating operating voltage, power consumption, etc. is
located on the rear exterior.
•Unplug the set from the wall outlet when it is not to be used for an
extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull it out by grasping
the plug. Never pull it by the cord.
•Do not install the set in a location near heat sources such as radiators or
airducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical
vibration, or shock.
•Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat build-up. Do not
place the set on surfaces (rugs, blankets, etc.) or near materials (curtains,
draperies) that may block the ventilation holes.
•Should any liquid or solid object fall into the set, unplug the set and have
the set checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•When the cabinet becomes soiled, clean it with a soft cloth dampened with
a mild detergent solution. Never use abrasive cleansers or chemical
solvents, as they may mar the cabinet.
•When an external antenna is used, disconnect it from the antenna
terminals of the set during a lightning storm, unless the installation
incorporates a suitable lightning arrestor.
If you have any question or problem concerning your set that is not covered
in this manual, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
•Before operating the set, please read this manual thoroughly.
•This manual should be retained for future reference.
This instruction manual covers the USA and Canadian models of
the ICF-9740W table radio. Their performance and specifications
are identical except that the Canadian model has a recording jack.

CAUTION:

SLOT, FULLY INSERT.
Location and Function of Controls
Perform the following steps in sequence for reception.
Dial Scale
FM External Antenna Terminals [FM EXT ANT] (rear)
See “Antennas”.
Recording Jack [†] (Canadian model only) (rear)
For recording radio programs with a tape recorder. Connect this
jack to the microphone input jack of your tape recorder with a
suitable cord. In the case of a Sony tape recorder, use the Sony
Connecting Cord RK-69A(optional).
The volume or tone control setting of the radio has no effect on the
recording.
Antennas
AM reception: The built-in ferrite bar antenna is used. Since the antenna is
directional, rotate the set horizontally for optimum reception, if necessary.
FM reception: Extend the attached AC Power Cord so that the FM
sensitivity will be increased, as it has the function of an FM antenna.
FM reception for difficult reception areas
In a steel-frame building, a mountainous area or at a long distance
from a transmitter, reception may be unsatisfactory. In that case,
connect a commercially available FM external antenna to the FM
EXT ANT terminals at the rear as illustrated.
4TUNING Knob
Turn to select the frequency of the desired station, as
marked on the Dial Scale.
Note to CATV system installer:
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer’s attention to
Article 820 - 40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding
and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the
grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as
practical.

3BAND SELECT Switch
Choose the desired band: FM or AM.
LOUDNESS Switch
Normally set the switch to OFF.
When listening to a program at a low volume, set the
switch to ON. This will compensate for our reduced
sensitivity to bass and treble at a low volume. The effect
of this control gradually decreases as the volume is
increased.
5TONE Control
Turn towards HIGH for more treble, and towards
LOW for less treble.
2Power/Volume Control [POWER/VOL]
Turn clockwise and the power will be on with a slight
click.
Turn it further for more volume.
After using, set it to OFF.
1AC Power Cord
Connect to a wall outlet (120V AC).

•La plaque indicatrice de la tension d’alimentation, consommation, etc. est
située à l’arrière de l’appareil.
•Débrancher l’appareil de la prise secteur lorsque son fonctionnement est
interrompu pendant longtemps. Toujours débrancher en tirant sur la fiche
et non sur le cordon.
•Ne pas placer l’appareil près de sources de chaleur telles que des
radiateurs ou des bouches d’air chaud, ni à un endroit exposé au
rayonnement direct du soleil. Le protéger de la poussière, des vibrations
mécaniques et des chocs.
•Laisser une circulation d’air libre suffisante pour éviter une surchauffe à
l’intérieur de l’appareil. Ne pas placer l’appareil sur une surface molle
(tapis, couvertures, etc.) ou près d’autres matériaux (rideaux, draperies)
pouvant obstruer les trous de ventilation.
•Si un matériau quelconque liquide ou solide, pénètre à l’intérieur du
coffret, débrancher le cordon, et avant de remettre l’appareil en marche,
le faire vérifier par un technicien compétent.
•Lorsque le coffret est taché, le nettoyer avec un chiffon doux, légèrement
imbibé d’eau. N’utiliser ni poudre abrasive, ni solvant qui pourraient
abîmer la finition du coffret.
•Si une antenne extérieure est utilisée, la débrancher de la borne d’antenne
de l’appareil pendant un orage, si l’on ne dispose pas d’un système de
protection contre la foudre.
Pour toute question ou problème qui ne seraient pas traités dans ce manuel,
consulter le concessionnaire Sony le plus proche.

Ce mode d’emploi concerne les modèles pour les Etats-Unis et pour
le Canada de la radio de bureau ICF-9740W. Les performances et
les caractéristiques de ces modèles sont identíques sauf que le
modèle canadien a une prise d’enregistrement.

garder le coffret fermé. Ne confier
l’entretien de l’appareil qu’à un personnel
qualifié.
Emplacement et fonctions des commandes
Bornes d’antenne FM extérieure [FM EXT ANT] (à l’arrière)
Voir “Antennes”.
Prise d’enregistrement [†] (seulement pour le modèle
canadien) (à l’arrière)
Pour l’enregistrement des programmes radio avec un magnétophone. Relier
cette prise et la prise d’entrée microphone du magnétophone à l’aide d’un
cordon approprié. Lors de l’utilisation d’un magnétophone Sony, utiliser le
Corden de Raccordement Sony RK-69A (sur option).
Le réglage du volume ou de la tonalité de la radio n’a aucun effet
sur l’enregistrement.
Antennes
Réception AM: L’antenne barre de ferrite incorporée est utilisée. L’antenne
étant directionnelle, orienter, si nécessaire, l’appareil dans un plan
horizontal pour obtenir une meilleure réception.
Réception FM: Etendre le cordon d’alimentation secteur attaché de sorte
que la sensibilité FM augmente, car il a la fonction d’une antenne FM.
Réception FM pour les régions où la réception est difficile
Dans un immeuble en béton armé, une région montagneuse, ou à grande
distance d’un émetteur, la réception peut être de mauvaise qualité. Dans ce
cas, connecter une antenne FM extérieure disponible dans le commerce aux
bornes [FM EXT ANT] situées à l’arrière comme indiqué sur l’illustration.
Pour la réception, effectuer les étapes suivantes dans l’ordre.
4Bouton d’accord [TUNING]
Tourner le bouton pour choisir la fréquence de la station
désirée indiquée sur le cadran gradué.
3Sélecteur de gamne [BAND SELECT]
Choisir la gamme d’ondes désirée: FM ou AM.
Interrupteur de correcteur physiologique [LOUDNESS]
La placer normalement sur OFF.
Lors de l’audition de programme à bas niveau sonore,
placer cet interrupteur sur ON. Ceci compense la
sensibilité réduite aux graves et aigus à bas niveau
sonore. L’effet de cet interrupteur décroît au fur et à
mesure que le volume sonore augmente.
5Réglage de tonalité [TONE]
Tourner vers HIGH pour plus d’aigus, et vers LOW pour
les réduire.
2Interrupteur d’alimentation/ réglage de volume
[POWER/VOL]
Tourner dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre et
l’appareil sera mis sous tension avec un déclic léger.
Tourner davantage pour plus de volume.
Après l’utilisation, bien tourner vers OFF.
