Installing
l Do not install the appliance in a
confined space,suchasabookcase
or built-in cabinet.
* Allow adequateair circulation to
prevent internal heatbuildup.
l Do not place the unit on surfaces
(rugs, blankets, etc.) or near
materials (curtains, draperies) that
may block the ventilation slots.
* Do not install the unit near heat
sourcessuchasradiators, or air
ducts, or in aplace subject to
direct sunlight, excessivedust,
mechanical vibration, or shock.
l Do not install the unit in an
inclined position. It is designedto
be operatedin ahorizontal
position only.
l Keep the unit anddiscs away from
equipment with strong magnets,
such asmicrowave ovens,or large
loudspeakers.
* Do not place heavy objects on the
unit.
l If the unit is brought directly from
acold to a warm location,
moisture may condenseinside the
Compact AV System andcause
damageto the lenses.When you
first install the unit, or when you
move it from acold to awarm
location, wait for about 30 minutes
before operating the unit.

Precautions
On safety
l Caution -The use of optical instruments with
this product will increase eye hazard.
l Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet,unplug the systemandhaveit checked
by qualified personnelbefore operating it any
further.
On power sources
l If you are not going to use the system for a
long time, be sure to disconnect the system
from the wall outlet. To disconnect the AC
power cord, grasp the plug itself; never pull the
cord.
l Should the AC power cord need to be changed,
have it done at a qualified service shop only.
On placement
l Place the system in alocation with adequate
ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the
system.
l At high volume, over long periods of time, the
cabinet becomes hot to the touch. This is not a
malfunction. However, touching the cabinet
should be avoided. Do not place the unit in a
confined spacewhere ventilation is poor asthis
may cause overheating.
l Do not block the ventilation slots by putting
anything on the system. The system is
equipped with ahigh power amplifier. If the
ventilation slots on the top surface areblocked,
the unit can overheat and malfunction.
l Do not place the system on a soft surface such
asa rug that might block the ventilation holes
on the bottom.
l Do not place the system in a location near heat
sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
l If the system is brought directly from a cold to
a warm location, or is placed in a very damp
room, moisture may condense on the lenses
inside the system. Should this occur, the
system may not operate properly. In this case,
remove the disc and leave the system turned on
for about half an hour until the moisture
evaporates.
l When you move the system, take out any discs.
If you don’t, the disc may be damaged.
l For power saving purposes, the system can be
completely turned off by the POWER button
on the main unit. Though the LED remains lit
for a while, the system is completely off.
On adjusting volume
Do not turn up the volume while listening to a
section with very low level inputs or no audio
signals. If you do, the speakersmay bedamaged
when a peak level section is played.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not useany type of abrasivepad,
scouring powder or solvent such asalcohol or
benzine.
If you haveany questions or problems concerning
your system, pleaseconsult your nearestSony
dealer.
On cleaning discs
Do not use acommercially available CDlDVD
cleaning disc. It may causea malfunction.
On your TV’s color
If the speakersshould causethe TV screento have
color irregularity, turn off the TV at once then
turn it on after 15to 30 minutes. If color
irregularity should persist, place the speakers
further away from the set.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Caution: This system is capableof holding a
still video image or on-screendisplay imageon
your television screenindefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or on-screendisplay image
displayed on your TV for anextendedperiod of
time you risk permanentdamageto your
television screen.Projection televisions are
especially susceptibleto this.

This system conforms to Ver. 1.1 andVer.
2.0 of VIDEO CD standards.You can enjoy
two kinds of playback depending on the disc
type.

Depending on the DVD, no region code
indication may be labelled even though
playing the DVD is prohibited by area
restrictions.
The system cannot play the following discs:
l CD-ROMs (PHOTO CDs included)
l All CD-Rs other than music andVCD
format CD-Rs
l Data part of CD-Extras
l DVD-ROMs
l DVD Audio discs
l A DVD with adifferent region code (page
8, 76).
l A disc that hasa non-standard shape(e.g.,
card, heart)
l A disc with paper or stickers on it.
l A disc that hasthe adhesive, cellophane
tape, or a sticker still left on it.
SomeCD-Rsor CD-RWs cannotbeplayedonthis
systemdependingupontherecordingqualityor
physicalconditionofthedisc,orthecharacteristics
oftherecordingdevice.
Furthermore,thedisc will notplay if it hasnot been
correctly finalized. For moreinformation, seethe
operatinginstructionsfor therecordingdevice.
Someplayback operations of DVDs and
VIDEO CDs may be intentionally setby
software producers. Since this system plays
DVDs andVIDEO CDs according to the
disc contents the software producers
designed, someplayback features may not
be available. Also, refer to the instructions
supplied with the DVDs or VIDEO CDs.

Notesaboutthe Discs
On handling discs
l To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by
its edge. Do not touch the surface.
l Do not exposethe disc to direct sunlight or
heat sourcessuch ashot air ducts, or leave
it in acar parked in direct sunlight asthe
temperature may rise considerably inside
the car.
l After playing, store the disc in its case.
On cleaning
l Before playing, clean the disc with a
cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the center out.
l Do not usesolvents such asbenzine,
thinner, commercially available cleaners,
or anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.

Playing unit
The disc changer consists of aplaying
unit, trays which hold the discs, and a
stocker which transports the discs on
their trays to the disc slot and the
playing unit.
For example, if you pressDISC 3, the
stocker moves until the DISC 3 tray
comes to the position of the playing unit
and then moves the DISC 3 tray over the

while playing DISC 3, the stocker leaves
the DISC 3 tray over the playing unit,
moves so that the DISC 4 tray comes to
the position of the disc cover, opensthe
disc cover and pushesout the DISC 4
tray (EXCHANGE mechanism).

InsertingBatteriesinto the Remote
You can control the system using the supplied remote. Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by
matching the @ and 0 ends on the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When
using the remote, point it at the remote sensorH on the system.
l Do notleavetheremotein anextremelyhot or humidplace.
l Do not useanewbatterywith anold one.
l Do not drop anyforeign object into theremotecasing,particularly whenreplacingthebatteries.
l Do notexposetheremotesensorto direct light from thesunor lighting apparatus.Doing somaycausea
malfunction.
l If you donot usetheremotefor anextendedperiodof time, removethebatteriesto avoidpossibledamagefrom
batteryleakageandcorrosion.
Step1:SpeakerSystemHookup
Connect the supplied speakersystem using the supplied speakercords by matching the colors
of the terminals to those of the cords. Do not connect any speakersother than those supplied
with this system.
To obtain the bestpossible surround sound, specify the speakerparameters (distance, level, etc.)
on page25.

Short-circuiting of the speakersmay damagethe system. To prevent this, be sureto follow these
precautions when connecting the speakers.Make surethe bare wire of each speakercord does
not touch another speakerterminal or the bare wire of another speakercord.

After connecting all the components, speakers,andAC power cord, output atest tone to check
that all the speakersare connected correctly. For details on outputting atest tone, seepage 28.
If no sound is heard from a speakerwhile outputting a test tone, or a test tone is output from a
speakerother than the one currently displayed on the front panel display, the speakermay be
short-circuited. If this happens,check the speakerconnection again.
l Be sureto matchthespeakercord to theappropriateterminal onthecomponents:@ to 0, and0 to 0. If the
cordsarereversed,thesoundwill bedistortedandwill lack bass.
l If you usefront speakerswith low maximum input rating, adjustthevolumecarefully to avoidexcessiveoutput
onthespeakers.
You can adjust the angle of the center speakerasillustrated.
Loosen the screws at the bottom of
the center speaker as illustrated. Adjust the center speaker.
