Controlling other TVs with the remote commander
The remote commander is preprogrammed to control non-Sony TVs. If yo&TV is
listed in the following table, setthe appropriate manufacturer’s code number.

l If you enter a new code number, the code number previously enteredwill be erased.
l If the TV usesa different remote control system from the one programmed to work with the
VCR, you cannot control your TV with the remote commander.
l When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the code number may change. Set
the appropriate code number every time you replace the batteries.
l When you presstheAUDI MONITOR button, your TV’s menu may appearon the TV
screen. To exit the TV menu, pressthe MENU button on the TV remote commander or wait
until the menu disappearsautomatically.

Selecting the best hookup option
There aremany ways in which your VCR can be hooked up. To hook up your VCR
so that it works bestfor you, first scanthrough the table below. Then usethe
accompanying diagrams and procedures on the following pagesto setup your VCR.
If your TV hasaudio/video inputs, refer to pages 10and 11for audio/video (AN)
hookup. Then follow oneof the hookups below. If your TV doesn’t haveAN inputs,
go directly to one of the hookups below.
For hookup 1or 2, usethe Sony RM-CM101 Cable Mouse (cable box controller) (not
supplied). For details on obtaining aCable Mouse controller, contact the Sony
Customer Information Services Center.

After you’ve completed the connections, follow the instructions for setup. During

provided where you can find complete, step-by-step instructions.
After you’ve completed the setup, you’re ready to useyour VCR. Proceduresdiffer
depending on the hookup you used. For anoverview, refer to “Quick reference to
using the VCR’ on the back cover.
Before you get started
l Turn off the power to all equipment.
l Do not connect theAC power cords until all of the connections arecompleted.
l Be sureto make connections firmly. Loose connections may causepicture
distortion.
l If your TV doesn’t match any of the examples provided, seeyour nearestSony
u dealer or qualified technician.

Audio/video (A/V) hookup
If your TV hasaudio/video (A/V) input jacks, you will get abetter picture andsound
if you hook up your VCR using theseconnections. For a true “home theater”
experience, you should connect the audio outputs of your VCR or TV to your stereo
system. If your TV doesn’t have A/V inputs, seethe following pagesfor antennaor
cable hookups.
If your TV hasthe Control S function, hook up your VCR using the conn$ction
shown on page 11. This will allow you to operateyour VCR by pointing your VCR’s
remote commander at your lV.
If you’re not planning to useyour VCR to record programs, you’re finished setting up
the VCR after you’ve made the connections shown on pages 10and 11. If you want
to record regular or cable TV programs, complete theseconnections first, andthen go
to the following pagesfor antennaor cable hookups.

Completing AN hookup:
After you’ve connected your TV and completed antennaor cable hookup, return to
this procedure to complete VCR setup. This will prevent unwanted noise in the RF
channel.

Connections between the VCR’s VHF/UHF connector and the antennaterminals of the TV
receiver should bemadeonly asshown in the following instructions. Failure to do somay result
in operation that violates the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission regarding
the useand operation of RF devices. Never connect the output of the VCR to an antennaor
make simultaneous (parallel) antennaand VCR connections at the antennaterminals of your
receiver.
Note to CATV system installer (in USA)
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer’s attention to Article 820- 40 of the
NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable
ground shall beconnected to the grounding system of the building, asclose to the point of cable
entry aspractical.

Using the cable box control feature
Recommended use
You should usethis hookup if you have acable box, especially if your cable system
scrambles all or most channels. This hookup allows the VCR’s cable box control
feature to control the channelson the cable box, simplifying the recording lyocess. A
list of compatible cable boxes is on pages‘37and 38.

Automatic clock setting
Once you’ve setup the VCR, it automatically setsthe clock the first time you turn off
the VCR. ‘ACS” (Auto Clock Set) will flash in the display window and searchfor a
time signal provided by someTV channels. After that, whenever you turn off the
VCR, it checks the time and adjusts the clock, even for Daylight Saving Time.
If you want to usethe timer to record right away, or if the channelsin your areado not
carry time signals, setthe clock manually. For details, seepage 33.

Connecting to a digital satellite receiver
Recommended use
Use this hookup if you have adigital satellite receiver that is compatible with the
Cable Mouse. It allows the VCR’s cable box control feature to control the channel on
the digital satellite receiver, simplifying the recording process. A list of compatible
digital satellite receivers is on page39.

VCR, it checks the time and adjusts the clock, even for Daylight Saving Time.
If you want to usethe timer to record right away, or if the channelsin your areado not
