1 Introduction
The Hobby-Line from Sorotec is a series of CNC portal milling machines for private users. The concept with
comparatively simple assembly, high-quality components and a selection of recommended components for
completion, which is intensively supervised by the manufacturer, is aimed in particular at beginners and is inten-
ded to create the lowest possible access to CNC technology at reasonable costs, but without having to accept
questionable stability.
The Hobby-Line is oered in four sizes, with the available work surface as the eponymous identier:
Hobby-Line 4530 S 450 x 300 mm
Hobby-Line 6045 M 600 x 450 mm
Hobby-Line 7545 L 750 x 450 mm
Hobby-Line 10560 XL 1050 x 300 mm
The basic structure of aluminum proles with a cross-section specially developed for the Hobby-Line, the roller
guide of the axes and the drive via ball screw spindles and stepper motors of the standard size NEMA 23 is the
same for all variants. A wide range of accessories is available to optimize the nished machine for a specic
application.
The bandwidth of possible uses ranges from 2D milling in wood and plastics to lm cuts and complex 3D tasks.
The machines in the Hobby Line are not designed for processing steel and for professional use in trade and
series production. For the higher demands on machining performance for aluminum and longevity necessary in
productive continuous use, we refer to our other machine series, in particular Compact-Line, Alu-Line and the
FE V2 steel machines.
2 Intended Use
21 Machining in space
Like all CNC-controlled portal machines, the Hobby-Line is also designed to machine the workpieces clamped
on the work surface with a program-controlled tool that is guided in space along three mutually independent
axes.
In the vast majority of cases, the tool is an electric work spindle with a clamped milling cutter or engraving stylus
for processing wood and plastic. Another application is lm cuts with a drag knife. The use of a laser as a tool is
also possible in principle, but is expressly not recommended due to the special dangers involved.
Depending on the type of control, the machine can be supplemented with a fourth axis in order to expand the
range of applications to include rotary machining, for example.
22 Operating limits
The maximum power of the milling spindle used should not exceed 1.1 kW. The maximum diameter of the milling
cutters used should not exceed 6 mm in wood.
23 Disclaimer of liability
Sorotec is not liable for personal injury or property damage caused by any use other than the intended, improper
handling or disregard of the safety regulations.

3 Safety instructions
Attention!
It is essential that you read the safety instructions carefully before starting up the CNC machine.
31 Personal protective equipment
Milling makes a lot of noise! Be sure to wear suitable hearing protection!
Milling produces sharp-edged, quickly ying chips! Be sure to wear protective goggles!
However, do not wear protective gloves under any circumstances. Gloves can get caught in the running cutter,
serious hand injuries are possible. For the same reason, avoid loose clothing such as open shirt sleeves, loose
jewelry (chains) and open, long hair!
32 Safe clamping of the workpieces
Make sure that the workpieces to be machined are rmly seated so that they can withstand the forces to be
expected without a doubt. Workpieces or parts thereof that are torn away can be thrown out of the machine at
great acceleration and cause serious injuries. Please also note the information in Section 6.3.
33 Emergency stop
The emergency stop switch must be easily and safely accessible at all times on the machine or in the imme-
diate vicinity. Several switches, for example also for the door of an enclosure, can be connected in series in the
emergency stop circuit.
34 Explosion protection
It is forbidden to operate the machine in an potentially explosive environment.

5 Installation and connection
51 Space requirement
The moving parts of the machine must not be able to collide with the environment. In addition, there should be
at least 20 cm available around the machine for maintenance tasks.
52 Installation
The portal milling machine must be set up indoors; the ambient temperature must be between 15 and 35 ° C
when the machine is in operation. Avoid getting wet and damp.
Note:
Condensation - the precipitation of water from the humidity on cold machine parts - is an often neglected danger
for mechanics and electronics. Avoid cooling the place of operation below the dew point.
Place the machine on a stable, straight and level table that can divert the forces into the ground without moving.
Attention!
Make sure that the rubber feet of the machine have a non-slip position. In connection with their own
weight, the rubber feet provide protection against slipping and “wandering”, which in the worst case can
lead to a fall and serious damage to the machine.
53 Cabling
The correct wiring of the Hobby Line portal milling machines is described in separate instructions. The instruc-
tions for the controller used provide further information. Pay particular attention to the instructions for earthing
the machine and control.
In addition, check from time to time - for example as part of the lubrication process - the intactness, especially of
the cables routed in drag chains, and that the connections are secure and free of corrosion.
6 Operation
61 Personal requirements
The user of the machine must have understood the basic function of all subsystems of the CNC portal milling
machine (mechanics, tools, controls and software) and be familiar with the dangers.
Attention!
The machine must not be operated after taking substances that impair perception and reaction (alcohol,
drugs, medication with a corresponding warning notice, ...).

Page 11/16
Hobby Line
Operation manual
www.sorotec.de V 1.2.0
62 Software
The core of the operation is the software used to operate the control. For details, please refer to the manuals of
the respective manufacturer.
The choice of software has a major impact on the hardware required for control. Sorotec recommends Beami-
con2 Basic or Estlcam for the machines in the Hobby Line and oers sensibly put together complete packages
as accessories.
63 Clamping workpieces
Attention!
Never try to hold a workpiece loosely in the machine by hand! Not even with the help of tools such as
pliers! Serious injuries can result.
Any material, regardless of its size and nature, must be rmly anchored on the machine for processing.
This „clamping“ must be designed in such a way that it can withstand all forces that are likely to occur during
machining.
Attention!
The clamping tools must not be in the way during processing (risk of collision!) and they must not have
any tendency to loosen under vibration.
In the simplest case, the eective clamping of a workpiece consists of a xed screw connection with a sacricial
plate made of wood, which in turn is rmly connected to the machine. Other clamping devices are, for example,
machine vices, centering vices, clamping claws with screws and stair blocks as well as special toggle clamps
and vacuum tables. When producing series, it can make sense to build a clamping device with stops to save
time, which repeatedly xes the material in precisely the same position.
64 Chip extraction
When milling wood, large amounts of chips and dust are usually produced. The machine therefore has to be
stopped again and again in order to suck up the chips. A chip evacuation system that surrounds the milling cutter
is therefore highly recommended when working with wood frequently. For this purpose, Sorotec oers a wide
variety of brush shoes with a connection for a vacuum cleaner hose to match most milling spindles.

Page 12/16

7 Maintenance
71 Cleaning
After each use, clean the portal milling machine from dust and chips with a vacuum cleaner (makeshift with a
large, soft brush). Greasy residues on the mounting surface can be removed with a cloth and benzine or brake
cleaner. However, keep these resources away from all parts of the axis guides and the drive.
The at parts made of aluminum do not require any special care.
72 Lubrication
With normal use, the portal milling machine should
be lubricated every six months, but at the latest af-
ter twelve months. To do this, proceed as follows:
Note:
On the subject of lubrication
there is a video tutorial:
https://youtu.be/mlZTcE045v0
All axes
• When removing excess grease, wipe the precision shafts of the roller guide with a rag to counteract the
build-up of ash rust.
X axis
• Remove the Z-axis reference angle.
• Remove the end plate of the Z-axis with the milling spindle installed in it.
• Loosen the spindle-side clamping screw in the drive coupling of the Z-axis.
• Lift the guide prole of the Z-axis up and out of the roller guide.
• Lubricate the spindle nut of the X-axis with a grease gun, as shown in Figure 1.
• Remove excess fat with a rag.
• Build the Z-axis parts back into place.

Note:
As a grease gun, we recommend the “Mini grease gun” set from the Sorotec online shop (item no. SM.00018).
The machine kit also includes a thinner pipe with a slimmer nozzle. These parts t every commercially available
grease gun.
Common multi-purpose grease is sucient to lubricate the spindle nuts.
The guide rollers are encapsulated and permanently lubricated. Lubrication is neither possible nor necessary.

9 Dismantling and disposal
91 Provisions
The portal milling machine contains many valuable raw materials, especially high-quality alumi-
num. Under no circumstances does the milling machine or parts of it belong in the residual waste.
When disposing of the product, please observe the regulations applicable in your country and all
relevant environmental protection standards.
92 Recycling and upcycling
At the end of its service life, it makes sense to roughly dismantle the portal milling machine in order to sort the
components according to material class for easier recycling. The aluminum parts of the frame structure, the drive
spindles and guide elements made of steel, as well as the electrics, each result in a separate group of materials.
Note:
The continued use of components that are still functioning, such as stepper motors or the control in another
machine, is denitely worth considering. Sorotec sees progressive environmental protection in this and will be
happy to advise you on the specic options.
Take the remaining parts to a specialist company for nal scrapping. In Germany, for private individuals these
are the recycling centers, commercial users contact a raw material dealer or recycling company.
