Application Note
Kato F40PH
Tsunami Digital Sound Decoder Installation Notes
Overview
This application note describes how to install a Tsunami
TSU-KT1000 Digital Sound Decoder into the HO Kato F40PH.
Skill Level 1:The entire installation can be completed in less
than an hour with no modification required to the model.
Bill of Materials
Stock No. Description
828064 TSU-KT1000 for the F40PH
810054 1”Speaker
Tools You Will Need
■ Miniature screwdriver set
■ Wire Strippers
■ Miniature Pair of Pliers
■ 25W Soldering Iron
■ Rosin Core Solder
■ Tweezers
Installation
1. Start by removing the body shell according to
instructions included with model. (Photo 1)
2. On each side of the manufacturer's light board
you will notice two metal strips that are clipped
to the board. Using a pair of tweezers, gently
lift the top of the strip up and away from the
circuit board, leaving the bottom of the strip
connected.
Note that the bottom of these strips can
move easily, but you do not want them to be
dislodged from the locomotive. (Photo2)
3. Next, remove the 2 screws holding the light
board in place with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Set aside in a safe place – you will need them
later. (Photo 3)
4. Remove the light board. Lift the board straight
up so as not to damage the copper strips –
these are the motor leads. (Photo 4)
5. Place the Sound Decoder over the motor
oriented as shown. Install the copper motor
lead strips fully through the appropriate holes
in the decoder. Take care that the bottom of
the clip does not become dislodged from the
copper strip that picks up the track power.
(Photo 5)
6. Replace the 2 screws you removed in Step 3 to
hold the decoder in place.(Photo 6)

9. Finish up the installation by plugging in the
speaker harness to the decoder. (Photo 9)
Now, simply replace the shell and enjoy!
7. Now, locate the speaker enclosure located
in the shell roof. This is designed to hold a
1”round speaker without any adhesive or
additional hardware. (Photo 7)
8. Solder the 2 wires from the supplied harness to
the speaker terminals. Positive (+) or negative
(–) has little consequence for this installation.
Start by stripping back a small bit of insulation.
‘Tin’the wire ends and solder the wires to the
terminals on the speaker. Press the speaker
into the provided space with the speaker cone
facing up.(If necessary you can use a bit of RTV
to hold the speaker in place.) (Photo 8)
