Grant Of License. The SOFTWARE is licensed, not sold. This End User License Agreement (“EULA”) grants you the following rights
to the SOFTWARE:
!You may use the SOFTWARE only on the unit.
!The SOFTWARE is provided “AS IS” and with all faults. The entire risk as to satisfactory quality, performance,
accuracy, and effort is with you. Also, there is no warranty against interference with your enjoyment of the
SOFTWARE or against infringement.
!Except as prohibited by law, Spectra Logic shall have no liability for any indirect, special, consequential or
incidental damages arising from or in connection with the use or performance of the SOFTWARE. This
limitation shall apply even if any remedy fails of its essential purpose. In no event shall Spectra Logic be liable
for any amount in excess of the purchase price of the unit.
!Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation, and Disassembly. You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or
disassemble the SOFTWARE, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law
notwithstanding this limitation.
!SOFTWARE Transfer Allowed With Restrictions. You may permanently transfer rights under this EULA only as part of
a permanent sale or transfer of the unit, and only if the recipient agrees to this EULA.
!Export Restrictions. Export of the SOFTWARE from the United States is regulated by the Export Administration
Regulations (EAR, 15 CFR 730-744) of the U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of Export Administration. You agree to
comply with the EAR in the export or re-export of the SOFTWARE: (i) to any country to which the U.S. has embargoed or
restricted the export of goods or services, which as of May 1999 include, but are not necessarily limited to Cuba, Iran, Iraq,

Introduction
About this Manual
This manual describes the procedure for installing additional tape slots to the Spectra 12000
library and Spectra 64000 library through the 60-slot segment upgrade.
About the 60-Slot Segment Upgrade
The 60-slot segment upgrade for the Spectra 12000 and Spectra 64000 libraries allows you to
increase the number of tape slots available inside your library. Each upgrade assembly kit
includes four durable plastic cartridge magazines of 15 tape slots in each segment, for a total of
60 slots.
!In a Spectra 12000 library, these magazines are installed on the opposite side of the robotic
rack assembly from where the current magazines are installed.
!In a Spectra 64000 library, these magazines are installed in rows opposite and above the
current magazines, depending on the number of upgrades.
The robotic picker easily reaches the slots on either side of the robotic rack assembly; this
upgrade simply provides more slots for additional media.
Estimated Time Required
This procedure should take approximately one and one-half hours.

How to Proceed
!If you have a Spectra 12000 library, proceed to Prepare the Spectra 12000 Library on page
7.
!If you have a Spectra 64000 library, proceed to Prepare the Spectra 64000 Library on page

Shut Down the Library
1. Disable any backup software that might try to access the library.
2. Power off the Spectra 12000 library.
3. Disconnect AC power before opening the library door.
Warning: Make sure that you disconnect AC power before continuing with this
procedure; electric shock inside the library can cause injury or death.
Disconnecting AC power will also ensure that your hands, hair and
loose clothing will be safe from moving parts within the library, if the
unit were to be accidentally powered on while you are working inside
of the library.
4. If necessary, move the library to a location where you have full access to the front
of the library.
Warning: The Spectra 12000 library is heavy, about 275 lbs (125 kg). Get help
when moving the library.

Open the Library
1. Use the Spectra 12000 library key to unlock the front door of the library (Figure 2).
2. Open the library door.

Note: Before proceeding, check to see if the drive slot door located on the left
of the drives is fastened to the robotic rack assembly with captive screws.
If the drive slot assembly has no screws attaching it to the robotic rack
assembly, then it is a stationary door, and you should proceed directly to
Step 5.
3. Remove the drives from the library drive slots by gently pulling them straight out.
Caution: Make sure you keep the tape drives in order so they can be replaced in
the exact location after this procedure is completed.
4. Remove the captive screws which secure the swinging door to the picker assembly.
Note: If the drive slot assembly has no screws attaching it to the picker
assembly, then it is a stationary panel, and you will not need to move it
(or the drives) to perform the 60-slot segment upgrade.

5. Pull open the swinging drive slot door (Figure 4).
6. Unplug the 25-wire black connector at the bottom front of the robotic rack assembly
(Figure 5).
Note: Certain Spectra 12000 libraries have a rail-mounted robotic rack, and
others have a plain carbon-top robotic rack.
!If you have a rail-mounted robotic rack, proceed to Remove the Rail-
Mounted Robotic Rack Assembly on page 11.
!If you have a carbon-top robotic rack, proceed to Remove the Carbon-
Top Robotic Rack Assembly on page 13.

1. Remove the four (captive or flush-mount) screws that hold the robotic rack assembly
in the chassis (Figure 6).
2. Carefully slide the robotic rack assembly outward until it locks (Figure 7).

3. Lower the transport tray to rest at the bottom of the assembly (Figure 8).
4. Push in the stop latches on the top rail of the robotic rack assembly.
5. Carefully pull the assembly all the way out of the library and set the assembly aside.
6. Proceed to Install the Magazines on page 15.

1. Remove the five flush screws that hold the robotic rack assembly in the chassis
(Figure 9).
2. Carefully slide the robotic rack assembly outward (Figure 10).
Warning: The robotic rack assembly has no locks to secure it to the library. If you
slide the assembly out too far, there is a danger that the assembly will
fall out or tip the library. Use care when sliding the assembly outward.

3. Lower the transport tray to rest at the bottom of the assembly (Figure 11).
4. Gently pull the robotics rack assembly all the way out of the library and set the
assembly aside.
5. Proceed to Install the Magazines on page 15.

1. Remove the magazines from their packages.
2. Look closely at the magazines, and note the numbers embossed on the back of each
slot. Number 1 indicates the top of the magazine.
3. At the top of each magazine, on the outside, there is a colored label which indicates
the position it will take within the library.
Note: Look inside your library to the niches where the magazines will be
installed. You may have color-coding on the tops of the niches which
would indicate where each magazine belongs. Do not be concerned if
your library does not contain color-coding; it is the colors on the
magazines themselves that are important.

4. Line up the new magazines on a table in the order to be installed (Figure 12).
Organize the magazines as follows:
!On the far left, place the magazine with the blue label on top.
- This magazine has a long clip on the middle of both the right and left sides.
!On the far right, place the magazine with the red label on top.
- This magazine has two tabs on the right side that are solid and without holes.
!In the middle, place the two magazines with the yellow labels.
- The clips and tabs on the sides of these magazines are identical to each other.
Note: Place the magazines in the library in this order, from the back of the
library to the front: red first, yellow second and third, and blue fourth.

5. Pick up the magazine on the far right with the red label. This installs nearest to the
back of the library, and should go in first.
Note: When installing each magazine, make sure the slot marked with the
number 1 is at the top of the magazine before placing the magazine into
the library.
6. Place the magazine into the library, reaching it into the magazine red-coded niche
(the niche farthest back on the left).
7. Clip the magazine firmly into place so that the large clip on the side of the magazine
catches on the clip on the niche (Figure 13).
Note: If you have difficulty snapping the magazine into its niche, you may
remove the library’s rear panel to obtain easier access. Simply be sure to
replace the rear panel after the upgrade is complete and before returning
the library to power.

8. Insert one of the yellow-labeled magazines into the yellow-coded niche next to the
red-coded niche—the niche next to the rear segment you just installed (Figure 14).
The tabs on the magazines should overlap and fit together.
Note: Make sure the tape slot marked with the number 1 is at the top of the
magazine before placing each magazine into the library.

9. Install the other magazine with a yellow label in the next yellow-coded niche—the
next niche closer to the front of the library (Figure 15). The tabs on the magazines
should overlap and fit together.
10. Lastly, install the magazine with the blue label into the blue-coded niche—the niche
closest to the front of the library. The tabs on the magazines should overlap and fit
together.

11. Check the position of the magazines to make sure they are all positioned flush
against the side of the library.
Caution: Make sure none of the magazines is positioned at an angle. The
magazines need to remain flat against the inside of the library or they
will interfere with operations and could cause damage to the library and
your data tapes.
12. This concludes the installation of the magazines. Next you will need to replace the
robotic rack assembly.
!If you have a rail-mounted robotic rack assembly, proceed to Replace the Rail-

!If you have a carbon-top robotic rack assembly, proceed to Replace the
